"That sounds a bit terrifying." Was that trauma I sensed?

"It's almost like hemalurgy, I heard. Not that I know anything about hemalurgy aside from what Fadran's told me."

"Keep it up," he responds.  "It helps when you keep your own mood up, or at least pretend to."

"What about troop morale? Morale for an entire army?"

"Food's a big one.  Keep people fed, and they're going to be happier.  The other big one is keeping people from getting bored.  And there's always jobs to be done in a war camp."  The pressure beneath his skin is growing.  He knows he knows what it is.  Why can't he think of what it is?

"I'm just looking around this place--and I think Fadran would agree--and I don't see an army."

"It's a resistance.  If I had to guess, they've been relying on magic users - people who can do a lotta damage, rather than numbers."  He taps the hand not at his neck against the table.  "We need to start looking at records.  See how many people are here.  It's possible this isn't the only camp."

"If this wasn't the only camp, then they wouldn't put both their generals here."

"True.  Speaking of which, please tell me someone's trying to get one of them back."

"Herate had to let herself get captured to save Daolan and a bunch of other people, and Fadran's off bargaining with gods, so... no. Nobody's trying to get them back right now."

"Wonderful.  For lack of a better metaphor, that makes us the substitutes that no one really knows."  He continues tapping a finger on the table.  "If you know what I mean.  We should probably start doing a few administrative duties.  Can't let this place completely fall apart."

"I'll see what we can do about this place's conditions. Tents, food; the camp in general."

"Okay."  He cracks his neck, and the weird feeling dissipates slightly.  Ha.

We should ask Connie about the camp, probably.

"Sure! What are they guarding?"

"Well, hopefully the perimeter of the camp."

"Ohhh.... from what?"

"They're watching for our enemies."  The pressure is back.  Weird.  Maybe the implant is glitching.  It'll figure itself out.

Camelia looked at her horrified. Ahhhhh! The third metallic art! Ahhh!

AHHHHHHH! LEADERSHIP POSITIONS! AHHHHHHHH! She tried getting her facial expression under control, but it was hard.

"Are you okay? You look like you just ate an entire lemon."

"I'm okay as long as I don't have to do any leader-y things. Which it sounds like I might." She did not like that idea.

"How do you feel about building cabins?"

"Sure. I could probably be more efficient than most anyway. I could literally make dirt huts, and then soulcast them into any material needed if necessary. Don't ask me to soulcast food, though. Soulcast rations are nasty." She wrinkled her nose in disgust.
