"I was in charge of a city." She repeated. "The other Lighteyes who lived there were basically on vacation when the Everstorm hit. The people were not prepared for that. Anyway, the Lighteyes that was still there got hit in the head with a brick. I successfully evacuated the town, and got them to Urithiru, so I did a good job. No one died on the way, although one man was seriously injured. I stitched him up. Anyway, a Lighteyes taking authority was normal for them, so they accepted it."

"I see."

Craven ran into the mess hall.

“That was awesome! You like-” Craven waved his hands wildly “did the thing, and then whoosh the other thing, and then she like was all wham and-”

He stopped. “Could I do all that? Later, I mean. After training.”

"It was so stressful. I had to get them from place to place without any Fused or Singers finding us. The one time a group of Singers found us, I had to fight them off. Alone. And, I had to organize everything. I had to make sure no one got left behind, that no one starved, and they all felt safe. Leadership is the worst. But it was worth it when I was able to get them to Urithiru safely."

"Oh, yeah, probably. It'll take years of hard work, but yeah. "

"If I found the person who decided to base government on eye color, I would punch 'Em in the face as hard as I could."

"Lighteyes isn't an organiz - I'd be right there with you.  That's a really dumb way to choose a leader."

"I know, right? Anyone, and I mean anyone, with a light eye color is higher on the hierarchy. And I was 15! They could have chosen someone else, but I was both a Lighteyes, and had proven myself to be a capable fighter, so I got put in charge. Never again. Ever." She shuddered. "They expected me to know what to do. It was awful."

"That's quite frankly terrifying.  Fifteen is way too young to be leading anything.  Sorry."  He would kind of like to see Eon against that system, though.

"I wholeheartedly agree. My parents were terrified. I had been left in the town while they went on an extra dangerous adventure. They were looking for these highly invested things called Dawnshards. They are supposed to have something to do with the Shattering of Adonalsium. I dunno. It was all just sucky. I now personally believe there should be a law against teenagers being put in charge of... Well... Anything really."

"I think there might be, at least in some places."  Things on Earth had been pretty vague for years, but he seems to remember a few places that had those rules.

"I should move there." She said, seriously. "Actually, I need there to be a law that prohibits me from being in charge of anything that isn't myself." She grinned, and kept eating her food.

"Then go to Australia.  Only place with common sense these days, or so the saying goes."

"Well, since I don't know how I got here, no idea.  But if I could get there, I'd advise avoiding the Atlantic, and if you can, don't get too close to Antarctica.  There's a base there with an itchy trigger finger.  And blend in, people are hyper suspicious."

She blinked. "Uh, okay?"

"I know that's not really specific.  But I don't know too much about that quadrant, unfortunately."

She shrugged. "There are plenty of places I don't know much about." She scowled. "Like Taldain. I've only managed to get onto that planet once so far. Stupid tidally locked planet. Stupid Autonomy."

"Interesting."  Martin rubs the back of his neck.  There's a weird twinge there.

"No. Not interesting. It's a Rusting pain for worldhoppers."

"Tidally locked though, and habitable?  That's interesting.  At least to me."  He's felt this sensation before.  Almost like someone pressing fingers against his neck, right beneath the skull.  "There's a lot of factors to that."

"What idiot would put a 16 year old in a commanding position?" She grinned. "In other words, yes!" Her eyes twinkled. "I should tell you about it sometime."

"What do you know about morale and whatnot?"

"You couldn't have my powers unless you'd want to undergo an extremely painful--and frankly unethical--procedure."

Cowards don't mind a bit of pain., he thought.
