Is it only the Aviar that can manifest abilities after eating the parasites in the Patji's fingers? We know that Sak, a non-native bird was able to develop powers. But is it limited to only birds? I think there's a WOB about humans not developing powers after eating them, but what about other animals? What is special about birds that allows them to access the investiture?

Questioner

If a kandra imitated an Aviar and went and got the parasite, would it be able to mimic the powers?

Brandon Sanderson

No.

You said before that if a human ate an Aviar worm, it would not doing anything, right? Someone's tried that? What would happen if a baby...?

Brandon Sanderson

Still wouldn't work. The gut flora is too different. And they're not part of the symbiotic life cycle there. That system has evolved to the symbiosis that it has, and humans are too new to trying to make that work.

Humans are not new on the planet, but they are not part of that system.

Podman36

Could they be trained into it?

Brandon Sanderson

Training wouldn't work

Podman36

Not like training, but through generations.

Brandon Sanderson

Through generations, that would be theoretically possible.

Because that is how the birds of First of the Sun interact with local Investiture. Other flora and fauna of FotS also have access to Investiture, they can sense minds.

Yea the weird predatory sea monster things(been a long time since I read that story, can't remember what they're called) are using investiture fueled abilities along with other various fauna native to the islands.

They're called Deepwalkers.

Nightmaws & Meekers also have thought detection powers. Meekers and Patji's Fingers also have thought projection powers.

Flight. Going to the perpendicularity at a young age needs mobility. The pool of potential hosts is much larger to a parasite specialising in birds.

Is it possible that nightmaws and meekers also ate the parasites, and that's how they detect thoughts?

That still doesn't explain deepwalkers, though

Investiture usage could've been developed independent of parasitic/symbiotic relationships for them, either an evolutionary trait or a constructed one. The main thing separating an Aviar from these other creatures is that they grant Investiture abilities to humans.

I always thought the Aviars just hid the thoughts of everything around them. That makes sense, though, because Sak didn't show Vathi her corpses originally.

Almost certainly. They have plants with arcane powers.

Only on Patji.

Kokerlii's breed does seem to create a... Coppercloud like effect from how Sixth seems to think of them. And Sixth thinks that the Aviar around Patji's Pool should shield them and they did seem to. Sak's ability seems to require a bond though.
