Necessary Eagle she/her Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 If male occupations are defined by "need two hands" , then Vorin amputees seem to be SoL.
Gilphon Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 Well, it's technically not defined by "need two hands"; it's technically defined by what Arts and Majesty says is masculine or feminine. Which is equestrianism is gender neutral despite needing two hands. I imagine there are similar loopholes going the other way; things can only need one hand that Arts and Majesty doesn't talk about. But really that's a detail point; and realistically people probably learn to just ignore the Vorinism wherever it gets too impractical.

Off the top of head they could enter the ardentia or become a stormwarden. It wouldn't cause any problems in business that I can think of. But your average Joe that's expected to farm or be a soldier is going to be in a rough place. Still know more than any one armed medieval peasant would be though.
+robardin he/him Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 (edited) There was a minor character I seem to recall from The Way of Kings who was a one-armed slave consigned to a Sadeas bridge crew. Not sure if he was enslaved before or after losing his arm, of if he was Vorin - probably not, as I think he was Herdazian? Not sure. But he was a slave in Alethkar at any rate. They used him to carry waterskins and then we kind of never heard about him again. Edited February 7, 2020 by robardin 4
Quantus he/him Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 Most women that arent rich and pampered just wear a glove because they still need to work for a living and need both hands. The flip side is also true, men arent required to use both hands for tasks they can complete with one; there on one-handed fighting styles, etc. As an aside, the characters even mention that a woman wrote Arts and Majesty, and how convenient it was that the feminine Arts were things light music and art and all these nice leisure pursuits and she kind of left men with all the more sweaty things she didnt enjoy.

Not sure what he did after that. (For real, though, I can't remember any specific duties of Lopen's being mentioned before he grew his arm).
