This thread makes me wonder... Do mistings exist in fairly equal proportions or are certain mistings more likely to Snap into existence.

That makes me think of another question... Is the metal you will burn determined at birth? When a person Snaps? Is every person 'assigned' a metal at birth, regardless of if they ever Snap? Or perhaps any person 'tagged' as allomancer has the all parts in their spiritweb to be a mistborn and in the process of Snapping, investiture rips through the spiritweb, taking the path of least resistance. This one-time surge of invesiture either opens a pathway for one of the metals, or clears the way for all of them.

Hmm, what do you guys think? Throughout all the books, i see many coinshots, tineyes, and thugs.

The main reason that Coinshots, Tineyes, and Thugs are common is because they're useful in the sort of situations we see in the books. Since exactly 16% of all those exposed to the mist Snapped, and 1/16th of those were Seers, I expect that the proportions are all equal. I do think that whether or not one has Allomancy and which metal one has are determined upon Snapping. Otherwise, the numbers of mistSnapped wouldn't be so exact.

Slider. All sorts of possibilities for messing with people. And not all of those legal...

Tineye. I'd flare that stuff until I became a Savant.

Remember Spook overflaring Tin? He was dodging sword swings by feeling the air shift as they swung. He even compared it to what he thought burning Atium was like.

Plus, near perfect night vision, the ability to sniff out poisons and toxins, and clarity of thought.

-

I can also just kill a Thug and take their pewter, then I have that awesome combination.

Quick question, if I was to take a spike and shoot it through a Thug's heart, then retrieved the spike and spiked myself, would it be Hemalurgically charged or would I have to get up close and personal to have it be Hemalurgically charged? This is all, of course, just hypothetical. Or is it.... *creepy smile*

Depends how big the spike is - a larger spike can retain a charge outside of a body for a longer period of time with limited degradation than a smaller spike.

Hmm. I was just wondering if I needed to actually be holding the spike for it to become Hemalurgically charged. I would in this hypothetical situation be shooting six-inch long, 1.5 inch wide at the base spikes. Think those would hold a charge long enough for me to run up, grab it, and slam it into my chest without too much power degradation?

Well, in the Hero of Ages...

Marsh kept the Spike that he used on Penrod inactive for some time, carrying around with him as he went from the village where he spiked the man (I think it was tin eye?) to Penrod to spike him. Of course, I don't know how potent Penrod's allomancy would be if he ever discovered it.

Basically you should be fine  :P

Yes, we have a WoB that shooting Miles with a bullet of the right metal and the intent to steal his powers would have been enough to kill him. Gold Compounding is not actually enough to make you invincible! :(

Silver bullets for vampires, gold bullets for Bloodmakers?  :D

Since I try to be thoughtful about decisions I make, I'd choose Oracle. That way, I can burn Electrum in tough situations and maybe see a way out I hadn't thought of. Secondly to that, though, it's a tie between Pulser and Tineye, both for practical reasons. A Pulser doesn't have to wait for boring things like commercials or doctor's waiting rooms, and Tineye Savants can do what Kal Dell was talking about in terms of Spook's breadth of ability in HoA. Third for me would probably be Lurcher, since it would be so helpful to softly pull objects toward you for convenience. Also, being able to disarm people pointing guns at me would be nice.

Iron. More useful for everyday life than a Coinshots, though less useful for mobility. I can use it to walk up walls, speed myself up when running at metal objects, and retrieve things.

Exactly! Iron is clearly better than Steel! I personally hate the idea of flying around, so the Iron-fly-nerf doesn't bother me. Losing bullet deflection is a pain, but I'm rarely shot at, and if I am going into a warzone, a bullet proof vest and redirecting things to my chest should suffice. Beyond that, I lose shooting bits of metal at people... and that's what guns are for.

As for what I gain... everything you said! I fell in love with Iron a while back, and I'm still going strong.

Aluminium Gnat. Just for fun.

(Well, what if the Gnats aren't just as underpowered as it seems and we have to rafo it?)

So we have no Nicrobursts yet... which means we have someone choosing to be an Aluminum Gnat before choosing to be a Nicroburst.

Good questions! We have no idea. The genetics of Allomancy have been a subject of discussion for years now.

Spiking an un-Snapped Allomancer with Hemalurgy is an interesting thought-exercise - I'm of the opinion that it wouldn't work, but that as an alternative, you could probably steal the genes for Allomancy, put them in yourself, and then get yourself Snapped. This might require an atium spike.

Vin's Mother, influenced by Ruin, killed Vin's baby sister and spiked Vin with the Bronze. If your interpretation is correct, it would mean that Vin's baby sister had already snapped, which I suppose is not impossible for a baby in poverty, but I am inclined to think that it is more likely that you can steal unsnapped powers. Of course, you'd have to know the powers were there, which is easy for Ruin but hard for humans...

Vin herself Snapped during birth. I think it very likely her sister did as well.

I'm still not sure when your Misting type is determined. The evidence is lacking. Brandon describes Snapping as having the bits of Preservation in you coalescing, as if it were a supersaturated solution. This makes me think Misting type is determined when you're Snapped (since the coalescing of Preservation in you should be suitably random), but I'm not confident at all.

I'm the only one who picked smoker, interesting.

Well, if anyone needs protection from seekers I'm here.

And so far I'm the only one who thinks Nicrobursting People is worth having. Despite the fact that its a great way to mess with allomancers and prevent them from doing things.

I´d love to be a Coinshot. The fact that they can practically fly (as long as there is metal to push underneath them) is enough for me. But also let´s not forget that they can turn your everyday pocket change into bullets. In addition to that they can turn bullets in slightly faster bullets.

Flying is great, but how often do you shoot people? Because if you shoot people often enough that you consider that to be a major benefit (and you also have a lot of coins and not many bullets, to the point that you would prefer to be able to use coins as bullets), then you may want to reconsider your life.

I want to say Slider, because I could definitely use more time, but given bendalloy prices and burn rates, that would be impractical for what I have in mind. Storm it, I need a Soulcaster, too!

After that, it's Coinshot or Thug. Strength and less sleep would be incredibly useful. I would love to be able to fly - and all you Lurchers out there, no offense intended, a Coinshot can do just about everything if he stands in front of the metal pole (or other anchor) instead of facing it.

I'd be terrible with emotional allomancy, Earth is a bit short of atium, and just about everything else is useless without other Allomancers to mess with.

So, probably Coinshot, but it's close. Of course, I'd rather be a Feruchemist...

P.S. Why no Lerasium mistings?

Lurcher or thug are by far the most useful, thug might be more practical, but coinshot would be fun simply for the jumping, although lurcher can still more mobile and has more non-combative uses.

After reading The Alloy of Law yesterday I'm going to have to go with Slider. Bendalloy may be expensive but it's definitely worth it, even if it isn't directly effective in combat.

Posted

I'd go Coinshot, could come up with a few ways to use that unexpectedly, particularly in short range/hand to hand combat, subvert expectations and be a Coinshot/BJJ fighter hard to avoid a coin at close range.

After much consideration, I'd go with Oracle. Seeing my immediate future would be rather useful if I were on, say, Patji, where everything wants to kill me. I wouldn't need an Aviar like Sak, which would imply that a bird wouldn't occasionally poop on my shoulder which would further imply that I don't need to clean my shirt/jacket more frequently than I already do. I mean, who likes doing more laundry than the average misting?

How about real-life attributes of being an Oracle? It'd be really helpful in a crowded place where you see future you getting pick-pocketed. Just avoid that person/path. Voila! Your phone and wallet are still yours!

Another useful attribute to being an Oracle: gambling. Do I go all-in on a certain poker hand? Future self reveals an excited me, so YES! Future self reveals a dejected me, so NO! Same thing applies to slot machines. Just walk past each machine until you find future you getting really excited after just one pull!

Sounds like that would go great with Feruchemical chromium. I'm not sure how much information you can get from the future-shadows, but you could win big and conserve your luck by working out how much you need to tap for each bet.

I think Feruchemical chromium probably works the same way that Mat's luck works. Stuff that rely more on skill are less likely to be affected by Chromium tapping.
