“Butt is beyond my emotional comprehension. But I do often think why I can murder thousands without emotional baggage yet seeing Star’s corpse scares me.”

“Fear is a strong word. More like, anxiety and worry.”

Ember perked up. "What is she like? I don't know Star very well at all. There are many who praise her, but... Why was she erased from time in the first place? What is she?"

“To answer your first question, she is the opposite of me. Selfless, kind, loving, friendly, helpfully, serving, etc. I think Silence erased her or her ‘Author’ wanted Star to die. She is an Narrator like me, but older. She’s been through a lot…”

Ember nodded. "My Author cares for Star. She would not harm her unnecessarily. But what did Star do to prompt such agony? Her pain was caused by her own mental state. And why would Silence erase her?"

“Silence motives are up to the conspiracy theorists. I just destroy.”

"No. You gave the emotion required to bring Star back. That was not destruction."

“Or was it? Is she in a worse situation than before?”

"I... I don't know. But TVG wanted her to come back and pain does not last forever. My master is infallible."

BoS reiterated. “We are all imperfect. You will eventually make a mistake, and you can’t avoid it.”

"But I am inhuman. I can correct my mistakes before they cost me. I was mistaken about you. But I fixed it. I am learning."

You know, the more I write her, the more Ember seems like Seven of Nine from Star Trek; Voyager.

Dude, I’m a Star Wars fan.

“It will be harder for people to understand you and just…sympathize and empathize if you are perfect. Mistakes make us better people… Then again, your not human so…”

Me too. One can like both.

"You do not seem to sympathize or empathize. Are you inhuman?"

While Tom was working with that, Ember looked to Pheonix. "So," she said, "you're Star's 'true love.'"

"Oh," Star said. "Well, that's far, far better than nothing."

Pheonix nodded solemnly as he began to fade away.

Tom looked on sadly, unable to do anything.

Tom nodded and took out a long silver object that looked remarkably key-like.

Ember looked at Pheonix in horror, his form disappearing before her eyes. In desperation, she grabbed hold of his mind, the part of her that was Star crying out terribly.

"How long did it take you to create all of those things?" Star asked. Tom was one of her favorites. "The keys, I mean."

BoS watched Ember try and keep Phoenix here. She thought to herself, Am I human? There is more to being human the sympathizing and empathizing, right?

Ember knew her telepathy was strong. The strongest out there. However, it was so strong that she was capable of ripping a person's cognitive shadow away from them completely. She had failed to save Pheonix and Xino (she was honestly having trouble distinguishing between the two) twice and her pride demanded that she mustn't fail again. However, if it was necessary, she would let him go to protect his mind. And so, she turned her telepathy the opposite way and attacked the offender of Pheonix's mind.

Quote

Star wanted to journal, so I let her. Why I recorded it instead of just writing it, we may never know.

Tom shook his head sadly. "He can't exist here, Ember. He got hit by Silence's attack."

Tom dipped the 'key' into the water. Silvery tendrils swirled outwards from the tip.

"What do you mean?" he asked. "I create them when I need them, generally... all at different times."

(I'm assuming you mean Ember)

Pheonix slipped through her telepathic grasp, fading despite her attempt to pull him back. Ember growled. "No! I can save him! There has to be a way! I am infallible! I will not be revoked by Silence or any other creature!" She grabbed Tom by the shoulders, the rest of her armor burning away. "How can I bring him back? How!" Her fingers began to smoke, burning Tom.

"I mean when you first started working on them. Keys in general. I just... Your ability to create amazes me."
