"Back to the roots and all that." She grinned excitedly at her own words. "We have to do this our way, or we won't be successful."

“Old briefcase?” Alask asked, but nodded to the rest of her words. She was right, the guilds only did something if they got something out of it. Same with the Forge, really. But while Lena got a place for her and Mart to stay out of arrangement, why was Alask trying to help the slums? What he get from trying to help out the ruined community, spending sleepless nights trying to ward off criminals? He didn’t know. A place to belong, maybe.

“But what would we steal?” He said, taking a bite out of the chocolate bar. It was good. “The Scholar’s Guild woman already said she was going to go and get a Soulcaster for us. What else do we need?”

"The old hideout. We could leave a message there, in case someone else drops by now and then."

Lena bit into her chocolate bar again and looked around. "We could steal some weapons, give them to the people to fight off the gangs by themselves. That would also make it easier for us. Or we steal a different fabrial - one to make it easier to work with stone for example. That could help building the houses more quickly."

Let's move threads? Harbour, or Alleycity general or the Forge, but we aren't really in the guilds location anymore.

“I don’t know about more weapons,” Alask said. It seemed they’d also be dropping weapons right into the hands of criminals. “But I like the idea of stealing a more specialised fabrial. A Cohesion Fabrial? They can literally put together chunks of rock and house like they were never destroyed. Or, maybe a special kind of Epic Motivator? It’ll be hard to get our hands on any of these things, they’re powerful and expensive tools.”

He grinned. “But I’m sure we’ll be able to figure it out.”

Agreed. I’d say Forge?

"Hello." Temeria smiled an uneasy smile and looked at the woman who was waiting for something. The woman shook her head and quickly walked away, left her standing alone - no, she wasn't alone. There were so many. Temeria clenched her hands to fists and approached another man, wearing strange cloths. Black pants, a black vest and a white tunic? No, not a tunic. It looked, different.

"Hello." She greeted him, forced her smile back on her face. He turned to her and seemed surprised. "I am looking for the Scholar's guild?" She asked quickly, when she saw him eye her cloths, her weapon strangely. He moved a step back, but still extended a hand to a street to their right. "Follow that one for a while, then take the fourth, or the fith to the right. You should be able to see it easily, it's a huge building, hard to miss." "Thank you." She replied and hesitated to leave, considered to ask another question, maybe who lead the guild, or if there was some kind of ritual to follow, but he eyed her sword again and quickly left her standing there.

Temeria closed her eyes and walked through the streets, followed the directions of the man, until she finally arrived at a huge building. Compared to the court of gods it was tiny, but then the court was gigantic. She hesitated, looked at the door for a while, unsure what to do next, if she really should walk up there, ask for information, directions.

Her fingers closed around the coin again, her thumb brushed over the bowler hat and the crossed nails. She had to. It had been worth to knock on the door of the Boarding House and she never had been a shy person. She wasn't sure why it was so difficult for her to knock here and now - she knew. Because she was afraid. Afraid that the next person to help her would vanish as well. Temeria put the coin back into her pocket and then stepped forward.

Resolutely she lifted a hand and knocked on the door.

There was a long, silent pause. Aln had seated herself back at her desk and begun working on a form. She sighed, rubbing her forehead, and glanced up at the large window in the front of the store. A woman stood there, wearing what seemed to be clothing from Idris. Aln stood, pushing her chair back, and rounded the desk. I just put that sign up, she thought, rather irritably. What do I have to do to get people to stop knocking? She approached the door, still watching the woman through the window. There was something familiar about her, something Aln couldn't place. Then the woman turned her head, bringing her face into view, and Aln knew.

She felt as though she was moving through a dream. Past and present seemed to collide, and an irrational surge of panic shot through her. Somehow her legs still carried her toward the door, and she opened it automatically. The woman met her eyes, and Aln whispered a single word. "Temeria?"

It had been 10 years since she'd seen that face, but how could you forget a sister?

A woman walked over to get the door, opened it. Something felt off about her, about the way she moved the way she looked at her. Temeria followed her movements with her eyes, looked her up and down, tried to find out why she seemed so familiar, who she reminded her of. The face, the hair, everything about her. No thought sparked, there was only the feeling that she did know her, maybe she had met her on the streets somewhere. Or she was a traveler as well. That meant she could have met her in Hallandren. It was only when she spoke that it clicked, the way her face moved, how she walked, how she held herself. Mother, no, too young- Dread filled her when she realized who was working for this guild.

"Alanis." She replied her voice growing cold. Alanis. The coward. The one who had left her behind and fled. The one who had never even bothered to try to talk with her, instead she had taught their brother how to write. She crossed her arms in front of her chest, stared at the woman, the one who had damned her. But she had fled, took their brother with them and left her behind. "That has to be a joke."

Aln may not have been able to hear the bitterness in her tone, but anger was smeared across her face. The same panicked part of her mind told her to run, and this time we was a little more inclined to listen to it. Indeed, she took an involuntary step backwards when she noticed the sword at her sister's waist.

"I assure you," she said stiffly, "This is no joke. How have you come to the Alleyverse?"

"Why do you suddenly even care where I am, or what I do?" Temeria shook her head, noticed the way Alanis looked at her sword. Interesting. So her sister hadn't learned how to defend herself. Poor girl. "Is he here as well? As usual the two of you together against the rest of the world?"

Her words were seeped with anger, fueled by a long hidden pain. She had tried to belong, had tried to get into the close bond between her siblings, but she had always been the 'beloved one', left to deal with their mother on her own. Of course the position had had its perks, her life had been good. But it had been lonely. Temeria looked at the woman, tried to see the teen in her that had left her behind. Scholar's guild. It fit her always-reading sister, the one who had risked everything teaching a boy how to read. It fit very well. And she looked like their mother. It was the way her eyes looked at her, the posture, maybe the way the hair fell. Temeria couldn't pinpoint it, probably it was more that her memory of her mother was overwritten with Alanis face, that she searched for clues that this person really was her sister. That she was family.

Family. With family here she wasn't alone, she had someone to take her along. A lifeline. Someone to explain, to take her hand and to guide her - and yet she felt nothing but contempt. Alanis had never cared about her, there was no reason she would start now.

Family. With family here she wasn't alone, she had someone to take her along. A lifeline. Someone to explain, to take her hand and to guide her - and yet she felt nothing but contempt. Alanis had never cared about her, there was no reason she would start now.

Temeria's words dropped into the air like the blows of a hammer, and Aln took another small step back. How could she explain? Temeria's eyes were full of hatred, so different from how they had been when she left. "Torenat is still on Roshar," she managed to say. "He was wounded in the war. He... he said that he went back to visit a couple years ago, but you were gone."

Temeria's clothes, colored in the plain Idrian style, were faded and worn, and the way she carried her sword had a familiarity born of practice. Surely she can't have been to Nalthis, Aln thought, searching for answers in her sister's face. Not Mother's Temeria. She tried not to think of the implications of that carefully tended sword. Tried not to imagine her innocent little sister killing. She failed.

Temeria's last words still hung in the air. As usual the two of you together against the rest of the world? Images came to her mind: Torenat, laboriously teaching her to speak once her mother had finally given up, his script uneven and slow; Torenat's triumphant grin when he finally bested her at Stones; Torenat sneaking into the library just before a highstorm so he'd have an excuse to stay with her; Mother's silent shouts when Torenat was discovered writing, and the tears in his eyes; Torenat carefully counting spheres in preparation for their journey to the Nightwatcher's valley, a half-packed bag spilling onto the floor; Torenat lying bloodied on a crowded stretcher, stormlight refusing to come to his aid; Torenat handing her a spanreed in an old wooden case as she prepared to leave Roshar behind.

"It was never the two of us against the world," she found herself saying. "It was always the world against the two of us." Another memory crept quietly into her consciousness: Temeria, holding her hand all one dark night, while a highstorm raged without. It had been soon after Torenat's conscription. Aln looked her sister in the eyes. "Against the three of us."

She served in Idri, Ene is right. But as she stayed several years in Nalthis she visited Hallandren at least once. But yes, she wears Idrian cloths.

Against the three of us. The words hurt, even more because she saw, that they were true for Alanis, and she closed her eyes for a moment, had to sort her thoughts.

"The three of us never existed for me." She replied quietly, wanted to get it all of the table. "I wanted to belong to you, but you never took the time. It was only when he was gone, that you let me close. And I never could fill in the spot her left." Her hand toyed with the handle of her sword when she looked at her sister again, tried to fit the person standing in front of her to her memories of her sister. It fit, but the picture was off. But it wasn't Alanis, it was her. She had changed so much, had ended up such a different person, she would have to get to know this Alanis again. The new Temeria and the new Alanis would have to meet.

"Scholar's guild?" She asked after a while. "It fits you. I was send her, for some information about this world. What to do, what to leave. Where to go. Things like that."

Aln didn't know how to react as her sister described their childhood. She hadn't realized how much emotion still lingered from her family until Temeria had appeared. As Temeria spoke, Aln realized something terrifying. Her words were faded. It was slight, after ten years of no contact, but it was there. Aln took a deep breath, trying to regain control. The entire situation felt like an attack, a prank by some cruel gods, designed to strike her where it hurt most.

Relief welled to the surface as soon as Temeria moved the conversation away from the past. Aln could handle talking about the guild. A hint of pride shone in her eyes as she said, "If you're looking for information, you've come to the right place. That's why I founded this place, after all. If I may ask, who sent you?"

She instinctively fell back into her usual manner; friendly, inquiring, and professional. There was no time for an emotional crisis when she had a guild to run.

You noticed the most important thing. Temeria turned into a fighter and she has killed and has to qualms to do it again. She's far from the little sister Aln knew, a chance to build a new relationship, or to drive the car against the wall completely ;)

Founded this place. Her sister had risen it seemed. High into the very league her mother would have loved. Any yet, while she had switched the topic as well, she hadn't asked her to step inside. Another sign, that she wasn't welcome here. "Mac Thorstenson." She replied and left everything else away. How he had told her, that he was a god and at the same time not a god. But he had refered to himself as a god. It didn't matter anymore. He had left. Her fingers reached out for his coin again, turned it around in her pocket when she realized that coming here had been a grave mistake. Her sister. Of all people to meet here, her sister was running this place. Temeria would have known how to handle an unfriendly man, an arrogant woman, everybody, but her sister - she had no idea how to deal with her.

So for now she stayed quiet, tried to see if Mac's name sparked any reaction on Alanis part.

"Mac Thorstenton? How in the storms do you know Mac Thorstenton?" She stepped back, gesturing Temeria inside as a draft of cold air drifted through the open door. Aln glanced at her bookshelf. She was sure that she had a volume on Mac somewhere.

Temeria followed her inside, closed the door behind her. "I figured he was famous." She replied and raised an eyebrow. Mac had seemed a pretty decent man, god, whatever and she wasn't sure if Alanis was astonished that she knew him, or if she was shocked. Slowly she looked around, wondered how her sister had paid for all of these books, let alone the building. She had to be rich, really rich if she could afford all of this that easily.

The air smelled strange, artificial, and there was some kind of machinery in the corner. The machine reminded Temeria why she had come here in the first place and again she wondered if it had been a good idea. To reveal to her sister, that she had no idea where she was, how to act? Her pride made her stand around uncomfortably, unsure if seitting down was some breach of protocol. Storms, she didn't even know enough about this place to avoid giving clues about not knowing enough about the place.

"Famous is a bit of an understatement. He's a DA leader, and one of the people that created this world. Some even consider him a god."

There were several comfortable armchairs in a corner, grouped around a low table, and Aln seated herself in one. She watched as Temeria glanced around the shop, uncertainty and curiosity evident in her face. Part of her was still marveling at seeing her sister here. She was so different from that timid little child that her mother had favored. How had this happened? "So, how did you end up here?" Aln asked. "And where did you get that clothing?"

Her eyes flickered to the sword again, but she made no comment on it.

One of the people that created this world. Temeria wished that she might get a chance to talk to Mac again, ask him about all of this, about creating the world, about all of this, but she knew that she wouldn't.

"He seemed a pretty decent person, when I talked to him." She replied a bit testitly, unsure what to make of the way Alanis talked about Mac. A DA leader. That had to be the guild he mentioned. That she understood what Alanis refered to gave her an odd sense of satisfaction, and she followed her over the stool unbuckeld her sword and leaned it against it. She made sure she could reach and draw it any time, then she sat down as well.

"I've served as a soldier in Idri for a few years." She explained her cloths. "And I ended up here, the way most do. I travelled." It sounded like she really knew what happened, how she had arrived here, instead of hiding on a cart and suddenly appearing in a strange world.

"How did you end up here?" She handed the question back to her sister, hoped that her answer might offer some more clues about the place or the whole travelling part.

Aln carefully noted both Temeria's reaction to Mac and her vague answer. Idris. Despite spending some time on Nalthis, Aln had never been to Idris, herself. The most interesting investiture, quite frankly, was in Hallandren.

"I? I discovered this place about nine years ago. Someone must have left an Alley open or something, so I stepped from the warcamps on Roshar to the Alleycity here. I fell in with a group of worldhoppers, and spent quite a while traveling the Cosmere and the Earths. I only settled back here a little under a year ago." Perhaps that was more detail than Temeria had asked for, but the answer should satisfy her. "How long have you been here?"

Temeria leaned back in her seat, listened to Alanis' words. Most of them meant close to nothing to her, but then she rarely understood everything Alanis was talking about. Or writing. Somehow it was soothing her, that this small thing hadn't changed at all.

"I arrived today." She replied. "A few hours ago." No sense in lying about the obvious. Alanis would find out anyway. Temeria's face darkened when she remembered how Alanis always found out anything and everything, not always to her own best. Alanis and their mother had been difficult together, until the one point when their mother had focused on Temeria and left Alanis mostly alone. She had been the one to make up for everything their mother disliked about her sister, she had always been alone. "It's nice that this world has some spren as well. I missed them in Idris." She stated instead to distract herself from her dark thoughts. Talking about their family or their past together obviously didn't work at all, so there was no need to start it again.

"What is an Elantrian?" She asked when she remembered the ring Mac had given her. He had turned into someone with silver hair, and his skin tone had shifted as well, although the dim light in the tomb had made it hard to judge the new colour.

Aln regarded her sister. Only a few hours, and she was already on speaking terms with Mac Thorstenton. And Aln had thought that starting a guild after a few months was fast. Interestingly, she hadn't seemed surprised that Aln could, if not hear, understand what she was saying. Well, Aln was not about to bring it up if Temeria didn't.

"An Elantrian is someone who's been invested with the Dor," she answered. "They're from Arelon, on Sel. Basically people just wake up and they've been transformed into immortal beings, with silver skin and hair, that can use magic. It's rather similar to becoming a Returned, if you like, just without the dying bit. Why?"

That explained the way Mac had changed. Temeria nodded and filed that information away for later use. "Max mentioned it at one point, and I didn't get a chance to ask about what they are, or where they come from." She explained, without mentioning the ring sitting in her pocket. She could turn into a being like a Returned, like a god. The thought was strange. She was nothing but a human, no god, no Returned. Aons, that was another word he had noticed. Maybe the magic they were able to use?

"What about these long metal nails?" She asked about the ones she had seen Mac use. "What do they do? What do you need them for?"
