the alleyverse has weird realmatic stuff going on.

in essence, in almost every case, in less you consciously try not to, you speak Alleyversian (that's not the actual name I made that name up just now)

Oops.

I've edited it to take that into account :) (and my character definitely like it better that way)

Aln watched as the man seemed to digest the information she had given him. She had done her best to keep from straying into complex realmatic theory, but it was still a lot to take in. It was clear that he had lost his memory, so she likely wouldn't be able to glean much information from him. She was about to ask a question when a flicker of movement caught her eye. She looked over and saw a tall Terrisman standing near the doorway. She jumped a bit, then stood, cursing herself for facing away from the door. How long had he been there?

"Hello," she said, extending a hand. "I'm Aln. What brings you to the Scholar's Guild?"

As the woman turn toward him, Folorian realized he had ben staring at her safehand for the past... how much as it been? Well, I guess I'm starting to discover my curse.

He shacked the hand she was extending toward him and started talking, a mix of apprehension and excitation in his voice a eyes

"I-I'm Folorian, I-I'm sorry for startling you: it was written to enter without knocking. About why I'm here, well... You'll probably find it weird but I'm new to this planet and I'm searching for informations about it, for example what is that language I'm speaking? I had never heard it before today!"

Might not have been my greatest idea to open with a "I'm not from this planet", though she has a safeglove so she might not be from here herself.

Ah, a new arrival, Aln thought. Makes sense.

"If you're seeking information, you've come to the right place," she replied. "This guild's mission is to seek and distribute truth." Her eyes darted back to the other man - the amnesiac - for a moment. There was still a mystery there to be solved. But Folorian was looking at her expectantly, and she remembered how it had been when she had first arrived herself. She gave an inward sigh, then gestured to the unnamed man. "Just one moment." Then she turned back to Folorian.

"This is the Alleyverse, or to be more precise, the Alleycity." She pointed in the direction of a map which hung in the space between two bookshelves. "You can think of it as a pocket universe that is tied to the Alleyways of most worlds. The reason we can all speak the same language is a subject of some debate, but the most widely accepted theory at the moment is that the huge amount of Investiture in the Worldspike is powerful enough to instantly Connect your Spirit Web to the world. Interestingly, the same effect does not apply to written languages."

"Words? Plural? Do you mean others Cosmeres or is just your way of speaking of other planets?" asked Folorian, visibly excitated. Please be the first

"And what is that 'Worldspike' you mentioned?" Please don't be hemalurgy

Aln hesitated, trying to pull her thoughts together. It had already been a long day, and this was a complicated explanation.

"To answer your first question, that depends on what you mean by 'Cosmere' If you're using this to be synonymous with 'universe', then for the most part, no. There are some complicated experiments with Alleys and whatnot, but the more widely accessible places are just planets. Of course, there are more beyond the standard 'Cosmere' set (by which I mean Roshar, Scadrial, Nalthis, Threnody, etc.). These mostly consist of parallel 'Earths' - which are each alternative realities on the same planet of 'Earth'. This subject only gets more complicated the further you examine it; I spend much of my time trying to work these things out."

She glanced back at the amnesiac for a brief moment, to see how he was taking this in, then returned her attention to Folorian.

"As for your second question, the Worldspike is a massive Hemalurgic spike that was initially used to create this world. It essentially spiked stability into this realm. Where, exactly, the DA acquired such a spike, I don't know."

It irked her, sometimes, talking about these things. She had had to spend a lifetime travelling around the universe and poring through old books just to figure out what she knew now, and she still likely got half of it wrong. And yet, there were people in this city that knew the answers to all of these questions. Why did the DA insist on remaining so storming mysterious?

She had to stop herself. She was still on edge from her encounter with Temeria (which she could still barely wrap her head around), and fielding questions on complex Realmatic theory was hardly helping. All she wanted to do was hide behind her desk with a thick history book, maybe from Reckoner's Earth.

Folorian noticed Aln was starting to have trouble with the explanation and decided any information he could pry out of her would most certainly be in the guild's cooperminds and books and, trying to to think about how this world was essentially an hemalurgic construct, he asked

"Is there any chance your guild is recruiting? I really want to discover this world and well... it's not like I have anywhere else to go." he let go a tense laughter when as he realized he would have no idea where to go if they refused "I'm a trained archivist, does your guildmaster need any proof of my qualifications? It would be preferable that not, my family is not exactly in a easily-reached part of Scandrial." He let go another tense laughter. You're really not good at this

Aln let a smile flicker onto her face. "You're welcome to join. We require no qualifications; I'm hardly going to turn away someone who seeks knowledge. Besides, I'm sure that your actions will speak for themselves eventually." She paused. "You likely need a place to stay, correct? Unfortunately, the guild itself does not contain lodgings, but I'm sure that I can help you arrange something."

Temeria said that Mac gave her his boardinghouse. I wonder if she'll keep it open for the public.

She began digging in her bag; after a moment, she emerged with a small form, which she handed to Folorian. "If you wouldn't mind signing this, please."

It read:

I, the undersigned, hereby pledge myself to the Guild of Scholars, and promise to strive to gather and spread knowledge throughout the Alleyverse and corresponding worlds.

"Well that surely makes thing easier" said Folorian as he signed the form, "I do need a place to stay but if we can't find one before tonight, know that I'm quite capable in sleeping in uncomfortable places, like a library chair" he smiled as he remembered the countless night he'd done just that, back were the elders didn't trust him with cooperminds.

"Also, I'd like to tell my family I'm fine, so do you have any way of contacting Scadrial? Both the northern and southern parts would work."

Were exactly is the alleyverse supposed to be placed at a specific point in the Cosmere timeline? Folorian has done to see the Nightwacher a bit before the everstrom first stroke so I would like to now for how long he has been away from his family.

Time in the Alleyverse is strange. Every book takes place at a different time in the Cosmere universe, so there's not really a way to reconcile that. Instead, we just put the time roughly corresponding to the most recently released book on a respective world. There are various nuances (No-one can go back to Era 1 Scadrial, for example, even though they've come from there) but that's the essence of the thing. You can probably just decide the length of the separation (within reason).

Aln nodded. She'd reach out to Temeria about lodging at some long, but she still had to figure out how to interact with her sister. For now, she could pull down a spare mattress. The other question might be more difficult. She had some contact with a few universities in Scadrial, but nothing fast or easy. And if he was from Era 1, time distortion could make that nearly impossible. "That depends," she responded carefully. "When are you from?"

When, that's definitively an odd question.

"I'm from 1172 off the Vorin calendar, but may I ask you why you asked that? Does some people not come from that time?"

It would have made more sense to give the date with a calendar from Scadrial, but I could not find a precise equivalence between these two

That's because the Stormlight Archives and Mistborn happened at different times. We have to sort of hand-wave that, but there isn't really a way to go back to Era 1 Scadrial, or pre-Recreance Roshar, or anything.

Aln sighed slightly. A Rosharan date. Unhelpful.

"There's a certain amount of time distortion in the Alleyverse. It's status as a pocket universe allows it to connect with worlds that are each at different times, and sometimes even the same world during different Eras. The most notable example is Scadrial, where you're from. We separate Scadrian history into two periods: Era 1 and Era 2. These are pre-Catacendre and post-Catacendre, respectively. It is far more difficult, impossible, even, to access Era 1 Scadrial from the Alleyverse. So tell me: when you left, did the Lord Ruler reign?"

Actually I found a timeline that states mistborn Era 2 and Stormlight happen roughly at the same time

Time distortion? Reach the same word at different era? I'll have to investigate this further.

"I'm from three hundred years after the Catacendre so unless the Sovereign of the Southern people count, the Lord Ruler has been dead for a long time"

Era 2 is after Stormlight 5, though, and you said that he was on Roshar before the Everstorm.

Aln nodded. That should make things easier.

I don't see the problem, Era 2 is a bit after Stormlight 5 and the everstorm started about 300 years after Era 1

Folorian took a bit of time before answering, a bit embarrassed by how foolish his wish looked in retrospect

"Well, I was on Roshar trying to find information about the knight radiants that had been spotted there but I could neither find anything new about them nor about fabrials or anything so I decided to go to study old magic so I asked the Nightwatcher for a boon and she sent me there.

"I'm still trying to figure out what my curse is but it seems to be something like "loosing sight of things I'm not focusing on", time included"

Like right now I literally cannot put my eyes off you... Ok, I'm not saying that sentence out loud.

New information about the Knight Radiants? Well, perhaps I can help with that. Her eyes flickered back to where the amnesiac sat quietly. She'd have to see to him eventually. Perhaps it was worth establishing a permanent lodging associated with the Guild.

Aloud, she said, "Interesting. That's not a boon/bane pair that I've seen before. I try to catalogue any that I come across. This was very recent, then?"

"Well every pair is unique" Folorian answered "It is not much more odd than the person who got a set of pricey cloths. And to answer you yes, it was recent, I've only been here for a pew hours" I guess

Noticing Aln often looked to here side, Folorian tried to focus his attention on where she was looking at and soon started seeing Zerameth.

But he could neither see Aln nor hear her anymore.
