"Beyond whatever resources you collect while exploring, we will pay well for each day of work, in the currency of your choice, Chriysts, Boxings or Spheres." His eyes rested for a moment on those with notable Scadrian or Rosharan heritage. "The exact amount will depend on your contributions but even at a minimum I'm sure you'll find it satisfactory."

He reached into a pocket and pulled a large pouch out, resting it on the table for viewing. The red glow of a number of ruby broams peered out through the opening, briefly bathing Nitinyas' hand in light for a moment before he closed the strings of the pouch and withdrew it once more.

"As for danger, we've conducted an initial-"

Nitinyas was cut off once again as the sound of thunder rolled through the room. It was lower this time, more of a rumble than a cracking sound. But the doctor seemed irritated still. Once more he glanced up towards the ceiling before looking back towards the stairway, but the server had still not returned.

"I do apologize." He said once more. "Please excuse me for a moment."

He spun stiffly on one leg, moving towards the same staircase and marching up, the wood creaking once more as he ascended out of sight.

“How much you want to bet that’s not thunder and he has a monster in his attic?” Arun says after a moment

Renata looked up from her notepad. She'd just finished writing "strange thunder?" which she had circled.

"I storming hope not," she muttered. There weren't enough spheres in the world to make up for that. Renata watched the staircase out of the corner of her eye, half-expecting some kind of Voidbringer nightmare to come crawling back out.

Stupid, she chided herself. People were perfectly capable of horrors on their own - monsters weren't necessary. A memory floated through her mind, unbidden. She could feel the tug of a brush through her hair, fingers plaiting the long tresses, the reflection of a few emerald broams in a looking glass, turning the underside of her face green.

"Such beautiful hair you have, Talena..." her mother's voice. No, not her mother.

Renata squeezed her eyes shut, pulling her left sleeve up. She read the name there. Renata. My name is Renata.

Fah'loofah started laughing like a lunatic fool when the drumstick shattered over her head.

"That's kinda funny!" She said, feeling intense pain and rubbing her head to see if there was any damage.

She paused. "Hey, do you know what people are doing in that building over there? I'll tell you my social security number if you help me,"

She cocked her head. "Well, I'll probably tell you anyway, but this way it feels even. Can you help me?"

@beantheboy12

Zib looked around. "Where? I can eavesdrop for you."

He twirled the drumstick in his hand. Not shattered, but it would feel like that. He had these made out of carbon fiber.

"I think you're awesome."

Thanks for playin' along, Bean!

Fah'loofah blushed. "Aw, I think you're awesome too! 555-789-3342,"

Wait. that wasn't a social security number. But Fah'loofah's attention was taken elsewhere.

"That building, silly!" She laughed, pointing at the menacing tower-thing in the distance. "Would you really do that... for me?"

Renata flinched away reflexively at the touch, shooting an anxious glance over her shoulder at Arun.

Calm down, she told herself.

She nodded, taking a deep breath. "I'm fine," she lied, setting what was left of her glass of wine down on a nearby spindly table. "Bit of a headache. Too much wine, I think." Renata gave what she hoped was a relaxed smile and shrugged.

"Let's go and check? Not that it's a trap?"

Lizanne whispered to Lisa.

@kenod

Go up after him? Lisa thought. Go and talk with another scientist, one who lives in a weird tower, has weird things going on and seems like some kind of mad scientist? "Um," she said, but took another look around the room and everybody in it. "Yeah, let's go see what he's doing," she quickly whispered to Lizanne.

Lizanne nodded and, after grabbing more food, headed towards the stairs to follow the man. It was always better to know what was going on, than to stumble into something blindly. And right now, she wasn't only blind, but also wearing a large thick cloth in front of her eyes.

As you're running this, I hesitated to state that his employees simply let us pass. Will they?

Wilhelm watched the doctor talk and then leave. Thunder crackling above. Another place. Perhaps he’d be able to start again here. Maybe with more money, he could get out of his primal habit for good.

He shuffled over where the doctor had been standing, and looked up at the ceiling. “There’s thunder,” He said to the people around him.

“Perhaps some sort of ettmetal machine?” He asked.

There are no longer any left at ground level, so no they couldn't stop you. Are you trying to sneak your way up? Just look up from the bottom of the staircase? Openly walk up?

Currently no one in the room to answer :P
The doctor briefly left to go upstairs.

Alright thanks.

Lizanne hobbled up the stairs, as quietly as she could manage. Stairs were difficult. While she tried to be silent she stayed upright. Should the doctor come down again, she didn't want to be caught sneaking around. Nobody had said the upper level was forbidden. But then she hadn't been exactly invited either. Turning around she briefely looked down at the others and then continued, slowly walking up. Stairs were a pain, but at least it meant it would be easy for Lisa to keep up.

Hellbent followed her up the stairs, quitely, grinning. Then, crouching, he walked up to her, and whispered, in a scary voice, "Boo."

Renata watched Hellbent follow the crippled woman up the stairs, a small frown creasing between her brows.

Fool woman, sneaking around. Still, no one deserved to have that Shardbearer following them around. She stepped to the side a bit so she could keep an eye on them both. Also, it didn't hurt to have a clear line of sight back up those stairs.

As the others went up the stairs, Jack Professor Spadeus, followed. He was eager to discover the nature of the portal, the other fellows at the university would be so jealous.

Lizanne jumped, whirled around and took her bag to defend againsz whoever it was. She swung it in a wide circle, aiming for the head, the moment she started to turn. She hadn't seen her attackers face, didn't think, defended herself on instinct alone.

Lisa carefully walked up the stairs after Lizanne, but a large man went in front of her. Walking after him, she saw him sneak up behind her and suddenly whisper in her ear. Spooked, Lizanne swung her bag at him. Startled, Lisa moved sideways, trying to make sure she wasn't standing behind him. She couldn't really move far enough though, and one of her legs was still in a position where the man would easily trip over it if he moved backwards.

A voice from atop the staircase was just on the edges of hearing as the fight began to break out below.

"-ou mean you don't know what-" Nitinyas' somber voice drifted down and then suddenly cut off as noise from the stairway drifted back up.

A moment later, further creaks could be heard as footsteps began to descend once more.

Doctor. Doctors were smart.

Wilhelm places himself at the bottom of the steps, rubbing away any bloodstains near his mouth, though a little was still there.

He would wait. And then when the doctor came, he would ask his own questions.

If he could cure a cannibal.

I'm sure that question is going to reassure everyone present and ensure universal participation. :D
I'll wait til everyone has a chance to respond before posting again.
