I noticed one of the drawings in OB was of a ship with an upside-down mast, and in Bands of Mourning, they meet Alik, the Southern Scadrian whose people sail AIR SHIPS and wear masks and one tribe wears them so tight, it grows into their skin. (Anyone reminded of Mraize's babsk?)

Posted

Somewhat although I think that she wheres that for a different reason(secret identity and she is not human). Also what is your theory?

I think that Mraize's babsk and some others traveled through a perpendicularity with their ship, and they all died except her, who had to crash the ship on Roshar where Navani's scholars found it.

Iyatil is of Southern Scadrian descent, but she was born in Silverlight. She wasn't born on Scadrial. Also, the airship designs are quite different.

I don't think that connection is a thing. Southern Scadrian airships require Metallic Arts and those experienced in their usage, not to mention ettmetal, and need no masts (I'm pretty sure). Navani's design uses a Surge to fly and instead of having fans initialized by a Steelpush, uses masts to catch the wind and turn.

I think Navani's airship designs are just a WIP application of their new techniques using fabrials (that floating platform thing).

I think it's pretty normal for people to want flight technology. It's just a human thing?

And there's something just super appealing about fantasy airship designs.

Given that she just got married to Dalinar, I don't ship Navani with anyone else.........oh wait, wrong ship, sorry.

I think we'll see more technology develop on all planets and there will be some parallels, but not necessarily relationships.

I agree. Though I've often wondered how Branderson is going to tie it all together, since every book seems to be on it's own timeline. I also wonder if Hoid is... reincarnated somehow when he goes to a different planet. (Though I doubt it, since Worldhoppers travel through the Cognitive realm, where time seems to be sort of a mystery.)

I believe that Stormlight Archive occurs before Wax and Wayne, although I could be wrong.

Era 2 happens sometime after Book 5. It might be in the gap or a little after.

Brandon's said that he's not planning an Avengers Assemble type thing. There will be some characters showing up in the finale, the ones that survive and figure out how to be immortal, but not necessarily all of his characters. He's more showing pivotal moments in the history of the cosmere than assembling a task force.

I assume/hope that many of these people will die of natural causes.  I also wonder how one can become immortal using stormlight's systems and what happens to the spren of radiants who die after swearing the 5th ideal.

Stormlight doesn't seem to have an aspect that lends itself to immortality, but we're only on book 3/10 so that could easily change.

According to Brandon, death of the Radiant doesn't substantially hurt the spren, as long as the Oaths are unbroken. They experience trauma along the lines of anyone losing a loved one, but it doesn't cause them to go deadeye.

Questioner

After a spren has been bonded, what happens if the person it's bonded with dies?

Brandon Sanderson

If the person they are bonded with dies, it is an emotional event for the spren, but not a damaging event. As long as their oaths were not <broken>.

Argent

Kind of like if a friend dies?

Brandon Sanderson

Maybe a little more personal than that.

Questioner

I guess Helaran was not bonded to a spren then?

Brandon Sanderson

And why do you say that?

Questioner

I was looking at this line here and saw that his [Blade] had a gemstone at the bottom, so that was a clue.

Brandon Sanderson

That is a very good clue, yes.

I read the Southern Scadrian airship as more like a giant airplane with wings, a cockpit, and using propellers and such. Do we know if it was bigger or ship shaped? (heh ship shape) I don't recall any specific passages in the text.

Navani's airship is more like a design for a full sized flying ship using surges.

I don't think they are really influencing each other as the magic systems powering them are so different, and I think the construction design (materials / propulsion) is fundamentally different. I think this is more of a cultural naming convention as neither society have a better name for the device.

In Bands, the small one is described as being about the size of one of the motorcars they have. The big one is massive, though.

Much more like the ships the Reachers used in OB.

I always pictured them as similar to dirigibles, myself. The upward lift is powered by the Allomancy, the forward motion is powered by the engines.

Could we be looking at a spren who bonded several times in the future? That could be realy useful.

I think all spren of that type died in the Recreance.

If Adolin revives Maya, yes.

Not all. The Skybreakers did not abandon their Oaths when the other orders did, and (completely without evidence) I would bet that there were some few individuals of other orders who decided to not break their Oaths. Plus there’s the possibility of more spren like Glys who potentially used to bond Parshendi but could now choose to bond humans

There is also Syl to consider. Just because she suffered from some "brain damage" doesn't change she is an ancient spren that bonded multiple times and is slowly regaining her memories of that time.
