Beaker
I’m teaching emperors soul for the second time this year to two groups of (not especially academic) grade 11 students. This went over well last year but I’m interested to hear from everyone else what might be interesting topics or areas of the book to focus on. thanks everyone!
Quantus he/him
I feel like you should somehow make them aware of the rabbit-hole that is Hoid's cameo, if only to see if any of them take the bait and get caught up in the wider Cosmere. That sort of thing was like buried treasure in a book for me back then, and a lot less common.
Gavtyven he/him
An interesting thing could be to talk about how big a difference a small change in someone or something's history could make. Or talk about what kind of things they'd try to SoulForge for themselves and why.
Nathrangking he/him
Another interesting thing is the difference between a made law and a "crime" or rather does it make sense to make soul forging a crime but allow something like blood sealing? Quantus he/him
Building on what @Gavtyven said, it could be interesting to explore with them teh ideas of what they might want to change, and what sort of small changes might be easier to make than others, but be more impactful none-the-less. Especially right now you can dove-tail that into the classic "It's a Wonderful Life" example of how small changes propagate down the line. There'd be a lot of opportunity for folksy "Consequences" and "Be Prepared" type life lessons in there too, I think.
+Invocation
Ask them what one thing is that they would do with Forging, had they the ability, and get them to explain why. Always interesting to hear.
Pagliacci he/him
This could be an interesting gateway to discuss philosophical discussions such as free will and 'what makes us human?' in regards to forging a soul. Another point of discussions could be how our subjective perceptions influence our objective realities in literal and metaphorical ways.
dbulick
There is also the whole ends justifying the means argument that could be had.
Lidolas he/him
1. How well do you know your friends and family? How well do they know you? How well do we even know ourselves? How much does it matter? 2. How could small changes to your past have changed you in dramatic ways? Butterfly effect, 3. Why did Gaotona compromise his beliefs about soul forging to help create a forgery of the emperor? Have you ever compromised a belief to help a friend or loved one? 4. If you could, what would be the first thing you would stamp, what change would you make to it, and why?
Pagliacci he/him
This probably isn't relevant now but Brandon actually did a project-in-depth episode on TES https://writingexcuses.com/2012/11/11/writing-excuses-7-46-project-in-depth-the-emperors-soul/
