Thaidakar can still offer cookies, I'm just informing the readers. Care to join the CIA and help inform people new to the forums?

So actually, if people are offering cookies in the intro threads, we would like to know as we don’t actually encourage people to do this anymore. It annoys the mods and we don’t want to bother new people. Please do let us know if there are people trying to recruit to the AV this way because it’s not allowed or encouraged by the established RP community here.

wait, that's not supposed to happen?

I usually say, "welcome to the shard! want a cookie?" I usually ask and don't give them the link. so not really recruiting, sooooooo.

Hi everyone,

I've posted this in the PM as well but just so that I can make sure everyone's seen this and ideally get confirmation from people when they have (Just a quick reply is fine) thought I should post this here as well.

There's been an increase of activity in the introduction threads recently, likely due to a number of new recruits to the Alleyverse and returning active members in recent months. This has caused a bit of an issue where people's introduction threads can be taken over by us, which can be a jarring first experience to the Shard.

So in the interests of making sure everyone has a positive experience with the Shards I'd like to lay down some guidelines.

  • Don't recruit for guilds in intro threads unless someone has asked about them.
  • If you want to invite someone to the RP, try to do it in a general way like you would if you were suggesting they visit any part of the site.
eg. 'We have a really cool roleplay section if you enjoy that kind of thing link' rather than 'TUBA is awful, they can't even bake cookies properly, you should join the DA so you can help us rule the Alleyverse!' (Not that I think anyone actually talks like that but hopefully you get my point)
  • If someone has already recommended the RP don't post just to echo the invitation or provide support for the RP unless the original poster expresses interest or asks any questions about it. If they weren't interested the first time someone recommended it then spamming their topic is unlikely to change their mind.
  • We have introductory and new player threads in our subforum, wait for people to post interest here before getting into any kind of in-depth discussions.
  • Try to avoid back-and-forth debates between other members of the RP that aren't the poster of the intro thread, nothing worse than having your own thread taken over by something you might not want to hear about.

In short: Try to keep Alleyverse discussions and recruitment to the Alleyverse, let people know it exists if they might be interested but don't derail the thread and if someone seems like they might be interested, let them know where the subforum is rather than discussing it at length in an unrelated forums.

I'll keep an eye on intro threads for now and just remind people if they seem to be stepping too far or may not have read this, but hopefully that won't be necessary

To back up Voidus here, continued infractions of blatant RP recruitment will be hidden and can lead to mod queuing of future posts, post restrictions, and other punishments.

Generic giving out of cookies will likely also be discouraged. You should engage with the new member and not focus on memes first.

Here's the policy on posts like this from the mods.

Yeah, we got chastised a while ago, so we no longer engage in sales.

I'm not an alleyverser, but I think thats okay, especially since the CIA will be notifying anyone about the dangers of cookies, as long as you don't actually recruit the it's fine. Maybe in fine print say you are not actually recruiting.

ah. see I had not seen the second thing. so there goes my cool gig. BUUUUUT in my defense I learned it from someone, I don't remember who it was (though I am suspicious that TFA may have introduced me to doing it), but when I started doing it did not do the alley verse one bit.

We find it best to let people discover this corner of the Shard on their own. All the previously mentioned reasons aside, Chaos wields the almighty BANHAMMER, so it's wise to play it safe, lest wrath is incurred.

This falls under Chaos' post that we prefer people to post genuine welcomes and focus on the newcomer rather than memes.

You have my respect. You were VERY dedicated to handing out cookies.

So TL;DR, The 17th Shard is full of more than just a vaguely bloodthirsty baking association, and should thus not come across as such to newcomers?

Looks at very Sanderson Elimination focused Sig

Yes. The DA did it for years, but then it became an issue as the AV picked up speed with intro threads becoming about cookies and not new members.

We were firmly told to stop by the admins in no uncertain terms.

that sucks. but it's also good because recruitment on confused new members is probably bad. urm (auto correct says RUM!!! RUM FOR EVERYONE!!!) okay.

So... does anyone know what a Department of PR for the Dark Alley would even do? Is it much more different than any PR department for any slightly shady company?

You know I actually don’t know. It depends on the public image that the DA wants to project next Era. If it’s more secrecy focused like this era, you’d probably work closely with the Intelligence and Acquisitions departments to keep our activities hidden and plant fake leads for various disappearances and other odd phenomena. If it’s another goal then you’d work to do that.
