Two Forum Suggestions

1. This may not be a change; it may just be me not noticing a setting. But I'd like a way to globally disable graphical emoticons for my profile. I (finally) noticed the Options at the bottom of a post to disable them for a post, but I couldn't find anything in my profile settings to always disable them.

2. Is there a way to enable the "forum tree" at the bottom of a page, too? At the top I see something like "17th Shard Forums | 17th Shard | Suggestion Box and Site Issues", but the bottom only shows "Previous Topic | $thread_name | Next Topic". It would be handy to be able to click back to the root of all the forums, or even the "subgroupings", without having to scroll up or hit the Home key.

the thing between topic select is actually the board name. and there's a dropdown which lets you select from the other boards right under that.

and unfortunately I doubt there's going to be option 1, to disable emotes,

For disabling emoticons, do you mean seeing them or posting them?

If you mean seeing them, there is an option that does that I believe, but it disables all images in posts, not just emoticons. If you click the little down arrow to the right of your name in the box in the upper right corner and select "My Settings," you can then select "Forums" underneath "Your Options" and choose "Board Preferences." There will be a box that states "View images in posts, such as smilies and posted images?" which by default is checked.

Testing something out.

EDIT: Yep, with that box checked, no emoticons, including your own, will show up as pictures. Your emoticons will still appear as graphical ones to others who have that checked I think, but you yourself will never see any.

I am not sure if you can disable emoticons completely, as has already been said.

As for #2, I could make the breadcrumb appear at the bottom, but editing the global template would put it on a lot more pages than just forums. If it helps in the meantime, at the very bottom, there is a Back to Top button.

I meant posting them. I don't have an issue seeing them in others' posts, it just looks wrong to see them in my own.

I blame the FFML for my ASCII-only predilections.

There's a way to do that, but you can't do it in the quick reply box. Click Add Reply, then once you've written your post, scroll down and click Configure Post Options. This will open a menu with a few different checkboxes. Uncheck the Enable Emoticons box, and voila:

:D :D :D

You have to do that for every post, though.

well no, the quote is just a text copy, which gets parsed as your new post.

Yeah, I've been there for about 10 years or so, too. One of my friends told me about it way back when, and I've been lurking since. (I'm not the ELL, of course. ) The closest I've ever come to adding content to it was prereading for Vincent Seifert, who wrote a lot of Ranma fanfics. (You can see my pseudonym mentioned in the "Notes and Acknowledgements" link, if you don't believe me. )

I still have a lot of stuff backlogged in my FFML folder that I haven't read yet, but I imagine I'll get around to them eventually. (I'd even like to start "Children of an Elder God", but hoo!, that's a long one.)
