River Song Says- Spoilers!

Zahel is a character from another of Brandon's books, Warbreaker. He's one of the main characters of that book, where he possesses a black sword named Nightblood which should be familiar to you; it can talk, has a childlike nature, and wants to 'destroy evil'.

According to Brandon, Vasher/Zahel and Nightblood were always intended to appear in Stormlight Archive, and he wrote Warbreaker as an introduction for them.

Besides that though, take Edgedancer and EMTrevor's advice and read Warbreaker. It's my favourite Brandon Book.

Actually, the guess that he may have had a spren is spot on. Since Brandon has said that <you know who> is exactly the same as a Shardblade.

But made on the wrong world with the wrong magic system. I'm pretty sure that he doesn't have a spren, though his lifesense is probably the reason he can sense Kaladin and Syl.

What is a spren, though? It's the cognitive aspect of something which is able to slightly manifest in the Physical, and that manefestation can be strengthened by a Nahel bond for some spren.

NB is the cognitive aspect of the concept "destroy evil" or something like that. He has the physical form of a blade because that blade was fed enough investiture and given a command. So NB isn't all that different from a spren, in some ways.

Of course, he is locked into the form of a blade permanently, as far as we know.

OK, so I read Warbreaker. Where does it say that Vasher is Zahel?

It is not explicitly stated in the books but it can be deduced from certain clues (and it has been confirmed by WoB).  "Zahel" uses numerous color/flower based idioms that don't fit with Roshar, but do fit with Nalthis.  He discribes the highstorms as being Invested in his interlude, where he also exhibits life-sense.

The color metaphors, he can sense life around him, he plays the sphere game, he used to hear a voice in his head, he's cosmwre aware (talking about storms being invested,) and a lot of the training he does witg Kaladin he uses tricks to get the advantage. All these signs and probably more point to him being Vasher in WoR. We have WoB to confirm.
