The marine was gone.

"Well. That was a waste of time. I'll send some guards down to patrol around here, Sorana, set up an infirmary in the old spikesulate"

Devaan stepped outside. The Shield was gone.

Oh storms.

Around him stood a decimated city. Devaan sat down and glanced at the timekeeping fabrial on the door. Had it only been a week since the war started? it felt longer.

Devaan started packing most of his things, retrieving the sword from Sorana.

The War was almost over.

A rotted, steaming claw came down on Devaan's shoulder, gripping him lightly.

"Dear child," something rasped over Devaan's head. "Won't you accept a gift from Grandfather Nurgle?"

The shield is probably still up. Otherwise, everyone's gonna get radiation poisoning.

Also, the thing is going to be gone when you turn around. SO MYSTERIOUS!

BTW I was burning atium but ok.

The second he felt his something on his shoulder he super tapped brass, his body superheated.

"Ow!" Something rasped over Devaan's head, the claw lifted

"Won't you accept a gift from Grandfather Nurgle?"

"What do you want"

The thing was gone. A sweet, putrid smell wafted through the air, and flies buzzed around Devaan.

Devaan looked at the flies, and tapped even more brass, boiling the flies, He tapped Electrum to get through the pain.

Syen cut her connection to the illusion and it evaporated in a whisp of Stormlight.

Back in the control room:

A huge, bloated claw smashed through the wall, grabbing Syen in it's disgusting grip!

KoTiel sighed, and moved behind the shadow. "Just so you know, I can keep him busy, since won't be able to kill me," KoTiel told Devaan. "I hope so at least," they added hesitantly. "I probably won't be able to harm him that much though, I don't have a lot of experience fighting." They shifted their weight, preparing for the fight. "Anyway, I'm ready." They told the others.

A swollen chaos marine appeared out of nowhere, stabbing a filth-encrusted knife into KoTiel's back. A cloud of flies swarmed around it, obscuring them from the others.

Syen screamed and hit the claw with her hands. There wasn't anything else she could think of to do...

KoTiel saw the shadow disappear, revealing an empty space. They were wondering what happened, when suddenly, they felt something stabbing into their back. Shouting a warning, they quickly turned around, ripping the knife from their back. Healing the wound, they looked at their attacker, seeing clouds of flies streaming of it. Shocked, they threw a punch at it's chest.

Can Dakhor enhanced punches damage the armor?

Yet another scream, coming from the control room, he saw a hole in the wall, a claw was holding Syen, who was trying to hit it with her hands

"Use the sword or cover your ears!" Devaan yelled, putting his bear foot on the steel floor. Tapping the building-sized steelmind, he barely scratched the wealth of speed, but time seemed to stop for him.

He ran towards the bloated marine, tapping both allomatic and feruchemical pewter to strengthen his hand, he punched straight through the marine armour, he couldn't hear the cracking of rips that punctured several organs but he sure as hell felt them snap through his fist, He looked around and saw KoTiel covering his ears, a little blood seeped out of his ears, dripping down to the ground.

The marine laughed, spewing pus and gore all over Devaan.

"Grandfather Nurgle says hello!" it giggled, grabbing Devaan in a bearhug and lifting him off the floor. Devaan's fist was still through the marine's chest- it just didn't seem to care.

Syen stared at Devaan getting liftied of the floor and started pushing at the claw. Useless, she was utterly and completely useless.
"I'm sorry Essun."
she whispered, staring at her spren with tears in her eyes.

I dunno if meta-knowledge drops are against the rules, but like it's not directly interacting with the characters, so it's probably fine. This is a Nurgle Space Marine, he doesn't feel pain. Destroy his brain (or brains) or his hearts he'd likely have six of those because regular Astartes have like 4 of them. Destroy the head at least so he doesn't have hearing and sight

I know that. I'm playing 40k (tabletop) ;)

But Syen has no idea what came over her. She has no reason to know anything about the 40k setting, so she will not know.

As happy as I am that you recognize this, that's not quite right.

*pushes up nerd glasses*

Space marines have only 2 hearts and a single brain. Nurgle marines are so tough because they literally feel no pain, but removing the head will kill it.

Thank you for your time. *steps off nerd podium*

ohh ok, I remember them having only two hearts, but it's better to overestimate enemies than underestimate them XD

Devaan felt himself get lifted up, he sighed.

"Hey Syen, you gonna give me a hand here? Or do you want me take care of this. Don't freeze up now."

Devaan tapped weight, until he was 12 times his own weight, he slammed into the ground, causing a dent into the steel floor.

"So. You don't seem to feel any pain huh?" Devaan asked the thing calmly.

It giggled

Devaan pulled out one of his bladed cards and stabbed it in the left eye, then looked at Syen.

"This is annoying. If you aren't going to hurt him, at least heal me on the off chance I get hurt."

Devaan ripped out his fist from his enemies chest.

Syen stared at Devaan, shaking herself out of her fear. Healing. that she could do.
Pushing at the claw again she managed to move a bit to reach for her bag. Breathing in stormlight she stretched a hand in Devaan's general direction and felt for his body. Closing her eyes she concentrated on what she felt, shutting out the world, the claw holding her in a steellike grip. Healing was the only thing, she really knew something about.

You do realize, that she can't free herself? It's not like I actively try to sabotage you...

KoTiel just finished healing their ears when they heard Devaan say that the marine could feel pain. "Hey Devaan," they said, calmly. "As someone else who can't feel pain, my suggestion would be breaking their bones." Walking to the marine's right side, they used all the strength Dakhor could give them to aim a kick into the side of the marine's right knee. "Like this!" They yelled.

The bloated claw, which had been sitting idle for now, suddenly withdrew at the touch of the Stormlight, pulling Syen out with it.

A nasty chomp sounded outside, followed by a wet burp.

Aaaand Syen's dead.

I swear, Sorana asked me to do that. I have the screenshots to prove it, too. So please don't murder me, everyone

I did. Seemed like the perfect situation. She was never meant for a battle.

... Maybe we should have spend a bit more time worrying about the person who could actually get hurt.

Without any offensive skill, no weapon and no armor she was definitly wrong there. Syen could do nothing but heal people. So it's logical that she died and when I saw the situation evolve I contacted Grey Knight ;)

I already planed a new character, because I found her really difficult to play. Originally I wanted her to take over the hospital, but the way this attack played out was perfect for my non-fighter to die.

Maybe!

The plague marine collapsed in a steaming pile of offal and flies, breathing its last. Something exploded outside, and a wet roar of pain echoed through the walls.

Blue-armored space marines burst into the control room, spreading out and covering everyone inside. The sergeant, wearing a red helm, spared a glance towards Devaan.

"Sir?" she said, motioning towards the hole. A space marine walked cautiously towards it, covering the hole with his bolter. "What happened here?"

ohhhhhhhh, everyone thought it was the Chaos Marine that was grabbing Syen, not another daemon. Too late to do a clarification retcon now, innit?
