Confused Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 My argument is not that "each Order essentially exhibits an improved version of their divine attributes." They just need to exhibit the right attributes - and be "broken" in some way. Kaladin was always protective, Shallan always had artistic ability, Jasnah was always smart, etc. But the bond converts that attribute into a Divine Attribute. As Teft says, the bond enhances what's already there. Kaladin did not have to be an "extraordinary" leader (or extraordinarily honorable) to attract Syl, He just had to be a leader and be honorable. And be broken. The spren don't bond with only the top 1% (at least I hope they're not that elitist). But they must bond with a broken soul. That's the limiting factor - that and the serendipity of the spren finding the right host in the first place, like Syl using the windspren to find Kaladin.
PorridgeBrick he/him Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 But then everyone would be bonding. There's a lot of people who've had awful lives, and with ten orders I'm sure many would fit one to at least some extent. Remember, these Spren don't want just average people. They want the extraordinary ones, the ones that won't break their bonds. If they pick the wrong person they're dead. It's not elitist, it's basic survival skills.
Releaser12 he/him Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Maybe the reason they have those abilities is why they became Surgebinders, those attributes are what drew the spren to them, for example, Lopen, we don't know what he is, but Windrunner seems very plausible, anyway he was a contributing factor in keeping Bridge Four together, with his affable attitude, and with him actually bringing in his cousins to join Bridge Four.
InstantWalrus Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Heya, first post, It seems to me that at least one of Kal's passives is his affinity with wind. As others have mentioned he has increadable spacial awareness often described as being led by the wind, but on top of that if i remember correctly he also starts being able to predict/feel highstorms before they come. Not only that but he gets super mopey during, whaddayacallem... the periods where there is no highstorm. Which is something he had since childhood. He'd get depressed and often remarks how he hates that time of year and it always brought about really bad moods that only his brother could get him out of (not that hes the most cheery at the best of times). I mean they are called windrunners. 1

I mean they are called windrunners. Well he does have Seasonal Affective Disorder (and clinical depression). Sometimes things have a mundane explanation. I'm not necessarily saying he doesn't have an affinity with the wind but Brandon has given the impression that the Orders only get a single "magic perk" and for the Windrunners that's strength of squires. 1
DreamEternal Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 So far very few people pointed one of the possible explanations for Kaladin's windsense: Adhesion. One of his surges is related to air pressure, so it could explain his windsense, something Dalinar also seems to use during his fight against Szeth. Or it could just be stormlight perfecting his natural talents.
InstantWalrus Posted May 29, 2015 Posted May 29, 2015 (edited) AFAIK S.A.D. is to do with lack of light... hence most sever cases are in places where winter is dark and daytime is very short (are weepings or whatever they are called described as being dark? I always imagined the people generally liked them what with it being a reprieve from the highstorms and a good source of crem free water.) I still think Kal is strongly linked with the wind/highstorms. Much like Dalinar. -He has had several out of body experiences in highstorms -Syl if often compared/in contact with wind spren and i think its been suggested theyre closely related types of spren. I might be very wrong but when i read the books i always got the impression Kals connection to the storms was more than natural edit: hmmm s.a.d. being related to lack of light, lack of highstorms means lack of stormlight... food for thought edit2: if the S.A.D. vs magical explanation has been discussed before could someone linky pls. Im very new to the forums so obviously havnt read a great deal on here Edited May 29, 2015 by InstantWalrus
