Here you go its toward the bottom

These are from the Lexington signing at Joseph Beth, 3/18/2014. Some of these may be repeats

Q: Is it true that humans can bond to multiple spren?

A: They can theoretically bond to multiple spren.

Q: So, is shardplate created as a result of a spren bond?

A: RAFO.

Q: (Brandon mentioned changing Kaladin's plot so that he chose the "hard" path) What was the hard path?

A: Kaladin initially accepted the shardblade and plate in the first book, and the rest of the book was about him fighting with them. Really boring.

Q: Are highstorms a meteorological or magical phenomenon?

A: Both.

Q: Did the mistress from the interlude in book 1 destroy the Shalash statue on the night of Gavilar's death?

A: Yes, and also all the other ones that we've seen, including the one in Shallan's vision in Words of Radiance.

Q: Is the mistress Shalash?

A: RAFO.

Q: How many oaths can a Radiant swear?

A: There is an upper-limit/threshold to the number of oaths a Radiant may make. By the end of WoR, Shallan was a step higher than Kaladin.

Not completely sure on this one: He said that at one point Shallan may have said all the oaths for her order (or may have been capable of saying all of the oaths by the end of the book) but has since regressed due to "memory loss/repression."

Regarding Dalinar: He said that Dalinar has had a bond with the Stormfather "for a while." He also only said one oath at the top of the Urithiru tower, not two. Dalinar conveyed a single idea in that particular oath.

Brandon also clarified that the oaths, with the exception of the first ideal, are not restricted to specific words. Rather, a specific idea must be conveyed for the oath to be accepted.

He says "for a while" and between that statement and Dalinar saying that the blade felt wrong some how to him makes me beleive that he had a nahel bond just starting to form with the stormfather and once he said the oaths and strengthened the bond he could then finally hear the screaming

I'm pretty sure it's backlash from Kaladin's contact with the Blade. If Relis had his own spren, the Blade should have been screaming the entire time, or it should have been a live blade with no screaming and he probably wouldn't have been up for attempting a four on one fight in the first place. His bond with the dead blade would provide a link through which he could hear the screaming, while Adolin wouldn't have a link.

Renerin was not bonded either but he showed a reaction as soon as Adolin handed him the blade.

But he was bonded to a Spren.

Adolin - not bonded to a spren or the blade in question. Renarin - bonded to a spren.

Relis - bonded to the blade. Kaladin - bonded to a spren.

That would plausably explain the Screaming but not his words.

It has to be something more than that to make Relis say "What is it?   What is it!    No, I didn't kill you!"  & make him run screaming from the arena.     It does not make sense that it would be just the Blade Screaming.     Why would he be concerned with KILLING a dead Blade that is not talking to him?      Only if he is talking to his Spren or an Awakening blade.

I assumed that, since he was bonded to the blade, he could hear it screaming accusations of murder, whereas Kaladin just heard screaming. It's quite possible that Renarin hears screaming accusations of murder every time he summons his blade. (Poor Renarin)

The blade could be screaming words at him. But that doesn't mean there's anything special about Relis that allows that to happen. I agree with the above posters that it's far more likely that it was the combination of proto Knight Radiant Kaladin touching the dead blade that Relis had bonded that allowed him to hear the screaming, rather than anything else.

We've already established that "dead" means something different for a spren than it would for a human. We know that Surgebinders can hear the dead spren screaming. In some way, the bond between shardblades and people can happen because the gemstone and the ten heartbeats forces the spren to be a little more alive. So when someone with this "fake" bond can suddenly hear screaming when a Surgebinder touches their sword, the most likely explanation is that the Surgebinder's touch has allowed the fake bonded person to hear the screaming, and possibly in more detail than the Surgebinder.  It is doubtful that Relis suddenly developped a deeper bond with a random spren. It is doubtful that it illustrates a sudden deepening of Relis's bond with his sword. Relis's behaviour prior to this moment is certainly not conducive to either of the latter cases.

Edit double post - it did not show up - so I retyped it & now they both pop up       GRRRR

lol.  No worries.

And Renerin was almost certainly bonded.  His glasses are mentioned when he first puts on shardplate, but iirc they're never mentioned again - until Dalinar notes that he hasn't been wearing them and realizes that stormlight has healed Renarin's eyes.

Here's a summary of the four theories I've heard:

1.  When Kaladin touched Relis' blade, it caused him to hear the dead spren in his shardblade.

2.  Pattern caused Relis to go crazy.

3.  Renarin uses an unknown power to cause his opponent to go crazy.

4.  Relis breaks an oath he had with his Spren, in the act of attempting to kill Kaladin.

I think 1 is most likely, although I think the others are possible.

This is from the Sugarhouse signing last Saturday.

Q:  Why did the Shard-bearer when they were dueling with Adolin and Renarin, why does the Shard-bearer freak out when Kaladin grabs the sword?
A:  Because when Kaladin was there and they were touching it, they actually heard the spren that was inside of it.  It was the sword's spren that Kaladin was touching it.  When the Knight Radiant touches it, you can see when other Knight Radiant pick up the swords, they can hear the screaming.

The phrasing is a little weird, but that's exactly what he said.  But it's clear enough to mean that Relis heard the sword-spren screaming because Kaladin was touching the blade.

Here is what I consider a much clearer wording:

Because when Kaladin was there and they were touching [the Blade], they actually heard the spren that was inside of it.  It was the sword's spren that Kaladin was touching it. When the Knight Radiant touches [that spren] - you can see [the same thing happen] when other Knight Radiant pick up [shardblades] - they can hear the screaming.

Agreeing with you Argent!  Maybe add a  "It was the sword's spren that [they heard when] Kaladin was touching it."

Well, if that is what BS says, then I certianly can't say different.

My only issue with it from the beginning was that Relis' words just do not match that senario.   --      "What is it?   What is it!    No, I didn't kill you!"  & make him run screaming from the arena.      It does not make sense like that.     Only if he is talking to his Spren or an Awakening blade.

So I guess that I will just take it as meaning that, when the event occured, he was not thinking or speaking completely coherently.    Which happens to people all the time in real life, so why should it not in a story.

That said.     It really makes Renarin look a whole LOT stronger, fighting to use the blade for 20+ minutes while hearing the Screaming.    When Relis could not stand it for 2-3 seconds and runs off screaming.     Renarin is the man!!

Maybe Pattern realized what was happening and added his own words to it as well?  That would account for anything more than just screaming.  Or Relis could have just heard death's agony in the screaming and tried to deny it.

The thing is, with Kaladin and Dalinar, when they hear/feel the blade scream, we never hear what it is that they are hearing. We just know there's screaming. For all we know, it could be that it's screaming that its holder (or the KR/ProtoKR touching it) killed it the entire time.

After the arena fight was Relis sent back to Kholinar?

I cant remember but i can see him meeting up with Kaladin in the Capital whether as an enemy or an ally is uncertain.

Remember how Relis looked at Kaladin in "awe" during the fight..
