Hi all

Short time lurker, first time posting-ish.

I was asked the other day who my favourite Cosmere character was (i went with the Blackthorn) and reading Mistborn just now, I thought about who Branderson's favourite character is. Wandering if we have a WoB on his favourite character? That he enjoys to read or write for.

Questioner

Your favorite character, and your least favorite character?

Brandon Sanderson

See, this is a hard one to answer. Robert Jordan would pull a complete cop-out when people would ask him this. He ways say, "My favorite is whoever I'm writing at the moment." This is because, as the author, you have to get into a wide variety of characters' heads and write them. But, since you didn't say in my works, I can just tell you my favorite character of all time is probably Jean Valjean. I'm a big fan of morality as it is portrayed in those books. What I love about Les Miserables in particular is this idea that different people can be moral in different ways. It's kind of the anti-Game-of-Thrones, which is about how you can sympathize with people who are basically immoral. That's kind of part of the series. And this is about how people who are basically moral can still not get along. Which is a cool idea, and I love that. My least favorite character? Who is the protagonist of The Dead? From James Joyce? I don't know. That'd probably be my least favorite. Yeah, I copped out, too.

What was your favorite character to write?

Brandon Sanderson

My favorite character to write is whoever I'm writing at the moment. I don't usually pick a favorite... I don't have a favorite character... and I don't usually have a favorite book. People ask that a lot. It's like choosing your favorite child.

Which of your characters is your favorite?

Brandon Sanderson

Tie between Lightsong and Vin.

Footnote: Brandon typically claims that his favorite character is any one he is working with at the current point in time.

Your favorite male and female characters you've written?

Brandon Sanderson

Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by favorite. A lot of people ask me this question, and my response is often different. Who am I writing at the time, what I am feeling at the time? Lightsong makes me laugh, but Kelsier is conflicted in a more personal, dangerous way—and that appeals to me. Vin is best rounded, but Sazed is (perhaps) closest to my heart.

From a quick glance at the Arcanum, it looks like he doesn't give a consistent answer. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

No this is great, thanks.

Its refreshing to see how the author feels about the characters they have created. I suppose he's got it right in saying its like choosing a favourite child.

Thanks for the reply Gancho

We know he doesn’t like Amaram (sob):

Questioner [PENDING REVIEW]

When people ask you who your favorite character is, you say they're all your children. And I always have the same thought: even Amaram?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

Well, let's say, my favorites are all of the viewpoint characters who are not slimeballs... Yeah, he's definitely one of the exceptions to that.

Questioner [PENDING REVIEW]

What other exceptions?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

Oh, I don't know. I'd have to think about it.

I remember reading somewhere that he says his favorite character is Hoid, but that "he won't tell us why."  I'll try to find that WoB if it exists.

EDIT:  All right, here it is.

In the Coppermind under Hoid's page, it says, "Brandon has stated that Hoid is his favorite character, but he couldn't say why without giving away spoilers," and it gives a LINK to the following WoB:

Who is your favorite character that you have ever created in any of your books?

BRANDON SANDERSON (2009-07-08)

You ask a tough question. Very tough. I'll have to say Hoid is my favorite.

So he doesn't really say here that "Hoid is his favorite but he can't say why," but it says that on the Coppermind, which is where I got it.

Relatedly, Brandon has mentioned that Bavadin is (possibly) his favorite of the Vessels. This was before we knew anything other than 'exists, set up on Taldain, Hoid has something against them'.

What is your favorite original Shardholder?

Brandon Sanderson

My favorite original Shardholder?

I don't knoooowwww...

Questioner

Are they all that bad of people?

Brandon Sanderson

No no, they're not bad-- they're not all bad people. Many of them are-- you know the trick is I'm gonna have to really write them, as their personalities. Because right now they're really just concepts, and I haven't written very many of them. And so... I'm very fond of Bavadin, but I can't say.
