The traveler Hoid was...

Recommended Posts

Ok so I know the traveler is kind of old news and been hashed over a bit already, but i just read it and it made me think. The "Hoids trying to restore adonalsium" theory has been theorized and retheorized countless times, but this article got me thinking, specifically this section

Quote

“You will not find a way to restore what you have lost, old friend,” the aged man said softly. ”It is impossible.”

This is, i think,  Frost (feel free to correct me) talking to Hoid. What exactly is it that Hoid lost? Is it not possible, and maybe even plausible, that Hoid one held Adonalsium in is entirety and is now trying to reconstruct a 17th shard that has enough varying intent to, theoretically, not cause the essential lack of free will an intent causes. A shard of roughly equal power to the other 16 with complete free will would be powerful, and dangerous in the wrong hands.

I don't think that is the only purpose. Hoid appears to be trying to bring someone back from the beyond. Someone close to him. Someone whose death fueled such hatred for Rayse. What you have lost isn't Hoid trying regain some power he lost. He is trying to bring back someone that has died. Something that would not have been possible in the days of Adonalsium.

“You don’t know that. The old rules no longer hold.” The Traveler turned the pomegranate over in his fingers. ”Besides, I’ve heard of a place… It doesn’t matter. I don’t care. This isn’t about the dead… or it’s not JUST about the dead, at least.” He dropped the fruit to the ground, wiping his fingers on his riding coat.

Agreed, I don't think this is referring to power but to a person.

"You will not find a way to restore what you have lost,"

then,

"This isn't about the dead..." heavily implies that, to me.

Maybe it’s his old master, the one he named himself after?

That is actually my current theory. I think his master may have taken up the power of Adon. After relinquishing the power I think Odium killed him.

There's also this bad boy...

Does Hoid have any relations other than his parents?

Brandon Sanderson

Hoid have any-- like direct blood relatives?

Dragon13

Yeah.

Brandon Sanderson

Okay. In the book, when I wrote it before, he did not. Dragonsteel isn’t 100% canon anymore so that will possibly change, but he did not, and there are none in my mind right now, so he's an only child as I have right now. It's unlikely to change, but I do have to asterisk that one because I haven't written Dragonsteel yet... Oh no, he had a little brother! He did have a little brother. Even in the original.

So my bet is on little bro.

I honestly think that Hoid had a special someone earlier, and is trying to find a way to pull her from the Beyond. It fits well in context, and this “place” Hoid has heard about could be the Spiritual Realm. Maybe she died during or the shattering, causing Hoid to refuse the shard he was offered.

Surely if it's the little brother Brandon wouldn't have forgotten about him?

I wonder if a deceased/lost little brother was an idea that started with an earlier draft of something, then ended up being turning into Kaladin and Tien (like how the Shattered Plains were originally meant for a totally different world and book).
