She smiled.

There wasn't really a lot of doubt in her mind now that Bat didn't feel the same way she did . . . 

But there was still a little.

Just a little.

So she didn't say anything.

The light lessened while they walked, as the quantity of crystals and other glowing things grew smaller.

She tried to summon a flashlight, but it only flickered into existence for an instant before vanishing.

I . . . guess there's Nullite floating around here? Maybe now would be a good time to head back.

There was a small hole in the side of her boot, blood pouring profusely out of it.

There was a similar hold on the other side, too.

He pulled something out of his bag and thrust it at her--- a thin slice of some dried fruit. "This'll help with the pain. Eat it." 

He hesitated, wondering whether or not to pull off her boot. 

Probably wait. He pulled out his compass to teleport them back...

He did indeed lose the compass. It rattled into one of the holes. 

He swore a lot, hoisting Tam into his arms to run back the way they came.

I think that would make the most sense  

Dropped it back there. The holes showed no sign of receding, so he shifted Tam in his arms and pulled out Illusion, nearly dropping her.
