"Are you sure?" she whispered back, giving him a hug.

“It doesn’t matter,” he said miserably. “Just come.”

“You just… wrap your arms around someone.” He said shyly

“Oh…”

She did it.

She squeezed him and let go.

He sniffled, then mentally cursed himself for being dumb. He was teying to impress her kinda, right?

”Anyway, here we go.” He pushed through the door into the building, and the receptionist waved him to the chairs impatiently, even though he’d barely stepped into the building.

He obeyed and sat down in the waiting area.

Oop

Yes very

He nodded, staring at his hands.

Another man sauntered in. “I need to see the council.”

“Do you have an appointment?”

“No, but I’m on their payroll.”

“Oh?”

“I’m a soldier. Think I saw something outside the city.”

”Whatever. Go ahead. They’re not doing anything right now.”

He continued down the hall.

She lifted her eyebrows and shrugged in a smug little there’s nothing *i* can do.

Even though there clearly was.

Half an hour and two more people later, the receptionist finally waved dismissively at Bat. He stood and started down the long, polished hallway.

That helped steady him a bit. Made him feel a little less like a glob of gum scraped off a shoe. He squeezed her hand and knocked on the ornate doors.

“Come in,” a deep voice boomed. Bat did so, and took a seat at the table before the raised crescent-shaped one. There were five members again, since Ruia was gone now.

Thinly veiled sighs sounded through the room when they saw it was Bat.

“I made a magic of my own, you know. It’s a bit dangerous though.”

Whan would look intrigued if you could see him, standing still and moving his nose slightly. “What happens if you touch things? Wait - you aren’t doing anything. Can you teach me how to use mine?”

She nodded thoughtfully.

“We could communicate through our Authors directly to function more as a unit. If your Author decided to edit that post, mine would remove incriminating information as well. That plan is fantastic, Rebus.”

He smiled, confidence in his posture. “We want incriminating information, if you recall. But yes, I can pull us to PMs if we need to build suspense.”

“I believe my curiosity is enough sated for now. Thank you.” She paused. “And no, I don’t recall, to be quite frank.”

The herd thundered into view, the first of them spilling into the valley.

Cadewyn stood and stepped down the slope a bit, then pushed.

Twin lines of blue fire flared out from his hands, arcing out around the inner rim of the valley, slowing after about 50 feet, bit still pushing forward along their curves.

This contributed to the distress of the buffaloes, and they stampeded faster. Soon all of them were somewhere in the valley.

“Maths. Calculus.”

She nodded thoughtfully.

Cricket didn't realize it, but he most certainly was. Where had Rose even gone,  anyway?

He trimmed and started running around the circle, pushing his fire in front of him to complete the circle around the herd.

As the fire he left behind him faded from blue to a normal red-orange as he stopped fueling it directly.

He can run fast. Not too fast, but about as fast as someone pewter dragging.
