Oh.

Well, that would certainly explain why Tam hadn't known.

She put a stubby little arm around his shoulders and pulled him close.

Kind of a funny image, ngl :P

NO IT IS

He buried his face in her shoulder. Thank you. How are you feeling?

Hehe

She shrugged and rested her head on the table.

He leaned back against her. "We do need to talk sometime soon."

She winced and let go of him, shaking her head.

He didn't let go of her. "It doesn't have to be now. Just soon."

She shrugged again and set her head on the ledge.

On the ledge . . . that was really high up.

She looked down.

High up enough that someone small could die if they jumped off . . .

Sudden, sheer panic shot through her as she realized what she'd done.

She grabbed Bat forcefully and bolted away from the edge of the table. He would be safe in the middle, right?

Actually, no, no he wouldn't. What if he ran for the edge anyway?

She held him even tighter and crept over to the side of the table, then hopped onto a chair, and finally down to the floor.

He'd . . . he'd be safe now. Yeah. There weren't any cliffs down here. Er- ledges.

She took some deep breaths to calm her racing pulse and breathing.

That'd been way too close.

"Woah!" He grabbed onto her while she ran. "Tam-- what... ohhh."

He felt suddenly guilty and hugged her tightly. "I'm okay," he promised.

He reached up and scratched her ears. "I'm not going anywhere," he promised. "My... my Author talked to me."

"It's not quite like that," he said. "It was... nice.. She said I'm real."

"Sorry, sorry--- uh... you... we... probably should talk about you, though..."

She made a frustrated noise and glared dangerously at him once she'd finally gotten the thoughts to go away.

He seriously wanted to talk about this now?

After he'd just- he'd-

The thoughts returned, and she shook her head again to make them go away.

"Okay, not right now. But you need to give me a time. Tomorrow? Or in an hour? Or... you can't just delay it indefinitely."

Um-

Yeah, she could, actually.

It wasn't his business- he couldn't force her to talk about it. It was private.

She glared at him some more.

She grinned. “Excellent.”

You dislike him, Rebus? For what purpose

His organization is a travesty, though it does fulfill a niche story-wise. And my Author is spending too much time thinking about them without doing anything about it. Like your brother - I heard they attacked him and got shredded. They’re minions - story wise they are expendable and thus cannot defeat anyone significant alone.

“We… we gotta do something.” He came over to the table and put his head in his hands. “I dunno… call Rebus, maybe?”

“I don’t know if we can really trust him…” he mumbled.

Then he paled and went quiet.

What are you talking about? Rebus is completely trustworthy!  Though he would quite willingly help do something about Ruia, at least if problems like disintegrating Narrators start to occur.
I’m kind of sad Atredies didn’t make any guesses about the Plotblade, actually. I’m thinking I made it a little too frustrating.

"Tam, I care about you," he pleased. "I... I really don't want to lose you."

Hehehe

See, the thing about Rebus doing anything about Ruia---

*cough*

Well . . . scud. Now she felt guilty it.

But . . . it was still hers. Still private. But that also made it her choice, no matter how much cajoling Bat did or didn't do.

Her expression softened a little, and she sighed.

The Narration making Bat tiny was revoked, and she hopped onto his shoulders again.

The orb doesn't move, but lightning crackles into it in a rhythm, creating a buzz that approximates speech. "Hello. Are you here to move me?"

Yes, said the Ennuller, taking in the orb. We... have come to recruit you.

The orb is very dark grey, seems about the size of a basketball and perfectly round, has lightning leaping at it, and is continuously Ennulling several things, including gravity and electromagnetism affecting itself. "Good. I need to learn my powers. How do I move?"
