No. I'm fine, thanks.

“What about…”

You’re just bothering her, idiot. Just leave her alone.

He stood up and picked up Elliot. “I’ll… be right back.”

Okay.

He took Elliot to a random room as far away from the common room as possible and closed the door.

Then he hesitated. He… would give her space.

He sat against Elliot’s door.

Spren, meanwhile, thoughtfully flapped her wings while she sat on the couch’s arm. I don’t see how it’s different.

I know you know what I mean. And it’s no different.

"Are you certain?" Him's face was grim, his voice somber. "The filth has been allowed time to fester. In scouring this universe, you may be forced to do things you find... distasteful."

She smiled. “You’d be shocked by the things I don’t find distasteful.”

She stayed silent.

She flapped her wings sullenly, but went quiet. For now.

A few minutes later, her shoulders were quaking. She stood and headed for the door.

"Stay here," she ordered Spren, tears streaming down her face.

She slammed the door behind her and fled into the woods.

Spren obeyed for once.

that would definitely be good

Okie then

Bat was awoken by the slam and immediately panicked.

…He should leave her alone. She…

But—!

He freaking couldn’t. He needed to make sure she was okay, even if that was selfish. He didn’t want to… he never wanted to drag her out of a snowdrift again.

Cold, blue, half dead……….

He sprinted after her. Very very fast.

“Tam, please,” he called. “I just need to make sure you’re okay.”

The tears were coming faster, now.

She turned herself invisible and hid behind a tree, quieting her breathing.

He slowed, then stopped.

What was he supposed to do now? Dumb, overbearing idiot, he’d scared her off…

He pressed the heels of his hands to his eyes. Every single time she just wanted a moment, he just had to go assume she’d throw herself into another snowdrift. Or maybe that wasn’t it. Maybe he’d been too needy and hugged her too much.

Breathing hurt now, and he thought maybe he was hyperventilating. Keep it down. Be quiet; leave her alone. She has things to think about already.

“I’m sorry,” he said to the forest in case she was listening.

I’ll leave you alone, he thought wearily. Maybe… find a snowdrift to look at.

He walked off his own way into the woods, keeping his shoulders squared and his chin up. He was already lost, anyway. What was another hundred, two hundred, five hundred feet?

Tam, on the other hand, just felt . . . empty. Numb. Though she jolted a little at his snowdrift comment.

She just . . . didn't know what to do. She knew what she wanted, but . . . she also knew that no one else wanted it for her. Maybe it was selfish of her, running of into the woods like that, or into the snow a few days prior, but . . .

She was just so tired.

Of course Bat was just trying to help her. Of course he had only her best interest at heart in chasing after her, but . . . for all their talk of trusting each other, she just felt like there were some things . . . that she shouldn't share with anyone. That she couldn't share with anyone-

-but . . . maybe she should.

Whatever. It was too late now, anyway. She could hear him leaving.

Coward, she thought to herself, more miserable than anything.

The tears returned in full force, and she sunk to the ground, sobbing quietly into her arms.

Bat heard her and cursed to himself, reaching to switch off the transmitter.

“I’m sorry. That’s not what I meant,” he said. Maybe he should bang his head against a tree a bunch of times. “It’s… it’s okay if you need to be alone… I’m sorry for panicking.”

And for the most part, she did. Want to be alone, at least.

But there was a small piece of her somewhere that just . . . wanted to feel cared for. He was just trying to help . . . he came out here because he cared about her . . .

She still didn't want to talk to him, but . . . if she didn't talk to him now . . .

She might never talk to him again.

And that small piece of her that wanted to be loved? It was terrified of that.

She took a couple of deep-

-Aaaaand  nevermind. She was hyperventilating again. Great.

B-Bat? she whispered, hating herself for saying anything.

Wait . . .

Well, scud. No going back now.

Obligingly, gladly, he turned and walked back to her.

Unsure of what exactly he should do, he sat against a tree a couple feet away.

Still invisible, she pulled her head up and yelped when she saw him. She hadn't heard him come over, for some reason.

H-hey.

Sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.

He looked down. I didn’t mean that earlier either.

You wanna talk, or… I can just sit here?

I-it's okay.

She wiped her eyes.

I . . .

Just say it, you idiot.

I just . . .

SAY IT!

She shivered violently.

I'm sorry for running off like that . . .

Scudding coward.

What happened?

Think imma sleep in a minute here
