She nodded to him gratefully, walked out the door, and approached the nearest glass wall.

He followed, pulled out his knife, and stabbed it.

...it didn't go through, though. It barely chipped the glass.

Hey, the collector said, annoyed. Quit that.

She blinked.

Then she grabbed the knife forcefully from Bat's hands and rammed it as hard as she could through the glass-

-though she dropped it a second later and frantically wiped her hands on her clothing.

"It's okay," she mumbled, still hiding. "My mother killed them before she died, too. --The humans."

"GOOD. They deserved it." He wrapped an arm around her awkwardly, "I'm sorry, about your mother, and your siblings. I know it hurts." He hesitated, then spoke again, "They killed mine too. They killed my parents and took my sister. It took me years to find her. They didn't kill her: they enslaved her instead. They tried to hold her from me." He looked up at the sky again. "But I protect my own. And I did."

It only broke a little more. Bat picked it up.

You'll never get out, she sighed. Just go do human things until I decide to release you.

Bat backed away and shoved Tam behind a tree. Then he threw the knife full force at the glass, and it went WAAAY faster than it should have, and as it connected, he was thrown back, but his body weight behind the tiny point of the knife was enough to break the glass. It shattered.

HEY, QUIT IT! Some dull thud began sounding rhythmically in the distance.

She sniffed and pulled herself out to wrap herself tightly around his neck again. "That's good. That's good."

"I will protect you. No human shall ever hurt you again. I swear it. On my life. You won't have to loose anymore."

Stop right now, she commanded.

They made it through the glass onto a table--- a large table. The thudding got louder.

She was quiet for a moment.

"I trust you now."

He created another fire-sculpture, this one of him and her. Her safe and wrapped around his neck, him on guard.

After a minute he asked, "what do you want me to call you?"

Crud.

"Fight or hide?" she asked Bat quietly.

“Hide,” he said immediately.

Though there was, unfortunately, no apparent place to hide.

She smiled at the sculpture. “Call me Eepy.”

"I- uh . . . okay."

She made them smaller, and they hid in the grooves of the wood grain in the table.

Fine, the voice said, sounding bitter. Be like that.

They were back in the cabin in the woods, like nothing had ever happened.

She looked around an breathed a deep sigh of relief.

"So what . . . it's over now? That was certainly . . . fast."

Mean. But yeah, you’re off the hook. And the cute one, I guess.

Bat nodded. “So when you were screaming at the air…?”

What time of day is it? Is is perhaps reaching sundown?

She jumped, then got very angry.

"GO AWAY!" she shrieked.

I AM! Geez.

Bat jumped very high, guilt and confusion spreading on his face. He chose not to speak for a moment.

She groaned and collapsed back in the couch, dropping her head in her hands.

Elliot floated over to the other couch, then was gently set down. He was still wet, actually.

"Eepy. I am Cadewyn, it means Battle-born. I will keep you safe." He looked up at the sky, the sun nearing the horizon. "Should we make a camp for the night?"

Bat eyed him. He was still asleep. Bat didn’t trust that at all.

“Yes yes,” she said, putting her front claws on his head to see further.
