She didn't like the look on his face.

". . . Bat?"

“You and your… wife, sister, mother.”

He looked up at the sword, then over at her. “One of us is gonna have to grab it eventually,” he repeated. “Right?”

"Where?"

She shook her head.

"We could just leave it. We should just leave it, Bat."

She pointed.

“But then somebody else will come across it, and then they’ll be in danger.”

“Or they’ll be a threat,” Rose pointed out.

Bat nodded. “See?”

He squinted at the figure.

". . . That's my daughter," he said, eyes suddenly full of worry.

-

"Maybe! But I literally conjured this place up right before we came here! Who else is going to come here and find it?!"

“Ah.”

“I don’t know… somebody, maybe.” He messed with the clasp on his bag, paying a lot of attention to the snaps.

"Who?! If we leave here and never come back, it'll be like this place never even existed!"

“Dead?”

“Until somebody else decided to come here. A Narrator or something.” He looked back up at the blade.

"No . . . here. Near me."

"They wouldn't do that though! We have no idea what this thing does! Why would anyone come to claim it? As far as they know, it's useless."

She tilted her head. “Because she loves you, I’d hope.”

“It doesn’t look useless. And the little light thing…”

-

"It's looking pretty useless to me! And the little light thing could have been anything! Honestly, I think that the light just backs up my point that this sword is clearly suspicious," she hissed, very clearly frustrated with him.

“She’s still here.”

He swallowed. “I… I know.”

"Great! So please don't grab it," she said exasperatingly, putting a hand on her forehead.

“It’s not about her, anyway. It’s about you. Move on when you’re ready, hmm?”

“What if it’s from my Author?” He whispered.

"And what if it isn't?!"

“I don’t know what happened between you, but she cares enough for you to wait.”

He shrugged, feeing silly and stupid. That would be worse.

He stood suddenly and walked purposefully towards his daughter.

Tam sighed and leaned back against a tree. It was too early for this.

The woman smiled and planted her hands on her hips to watch from a distance.

In the meantime, Bat’s thoughts spiraled, because somebody was too lazy to actually write anything.

He sat against a tree and cleaned his tattoo needle, even though he’d already done that.

The man knelt down next to his daughter, then said something softly. She looked up and him and put a hand over her mouth. He said something else, and she threw her arms around his neck and hugged him, tears flowing down her cheeks.

He hugged her back, and she muttered something. He started softly crying as well.

-

Tam didn't say anything.

She was just trying to keep him from getting hurt . . . couldn't he see that?

“Now there’s a chance they’ll go back. If they don’t, at least they’ll be together.” She gestured to another person, a lanky woman with glazed eyes staring up at the sky. “Now you try.”

Ah wait hol up

”It’s just that—“

She didn’t need to know. She had enough problems of her own without worrying about him.

But… I’m so sick of doing this on my own.

He wasn’t even doing anything! What was he sick of, then? Himself?

Actually, that tracked. Everyone else got sick of him.

The boy looked at her, wide-eyed.

"I-I try? But I don't know what I'm doing!"

-

She sighed.

"Sorry. I shouldn't have . . . gotten so mad. It's just that what?"

“Help her realize it’s time to move on, whatever that takes. If you need to, tell her she can have more definite pain here or the possibility of happiness beyond the waterfall.”

“It’s… I’m not very useful.”

"Oh. O-okay."

He walked slowly over to the woman.

"H-hi there. Uh- what's your name?"

Scud. He was really bad at this.

-

She cocked her head. "What do you mean? Of course you're useful."

She took a sharp breath, eyes focusing on him.

He rubbed his bat’s strap between his fingers. “I didn’t get him. Cricket almost died because of me.”

He felt very nervous all of the sudden.

"H-hello."

She walked over and sat next to him.

"I'm sure he didn't almost die because of you," she said softly.

He looked down at his hands again, eyes filling with tears. “I was supposed to get him with them Notblade. But I didn’t. It… all feels like a blur. I can’t help but feel like… I’m lucky nothing awful happened. Really lucky.”
