"No, it's fine." he said. "I... just want to end this whole mess with Malan." he blurted out suddenly, as if getting something off his back.  "I just want it over. I just... I want to be able to move on!"

“Move on,” she sighed. “That would be nice. Don’t worry. We’ll take care of him.”

“Ah. That’s unfortunate.” He put the flower back in the bag. “You can bother me if you want,” he offered. “If it would make you feel better, You could turn me into a frog or something.”

She smiled a little. "Y'know, a week ago, you would never have said anything even remotely like that."

"Actually, idea, what if I just made a copy of myself? No actual consciousness or anything- we could just go back to the whole "knocked unconscious" thing."

Tam looked at him sadly.

I . . . I know. But . . . it'll be over soon, right? And then you never have to deal with him again, she offered hopefully.

"That's... not a bad idea." Fael replied. She was ready to do it, but not all that jazzed about endangering herself.

Yeah. Then... I don't know, but I never want to fight again. In his heart, he had a sinking feeling he would have too, and rather soon.

"I... no." he decided suddenly. "This is my fight. Hopefully my last."

"Would the copy be a Narrator? Malan may be able to tell the difference if it's not at least partially empowered." Malevolence pointed out.

She frowned. “Author? What do you mean?”

Rebus passes Rose a wand. “Tam wanted me to give this to you, to apologize. It controls those ink things.” Unfortunately for Rose, the want does exactly the opposite of what you expect the ink constructs to do. If she doesn’t think it will work, it will. If she thinks it will work, it won’t. If she thinks it will make an ink bird fly forward, it’ll fly backwards. Really, I’m no fun? I’m so much better at passive aggression, Tam.

She eyed him. “Like, your god? Your god is called the Author?”

She jumped to her feet. “Where the heck did you—“

“Doesn’t matter. I don’t freaking care. If Ram wanted to apologize, she’d do it herself anyway.”

Gold coins flow from the Plotblade. Need... fuel. So long... locked away so long... Need... power.

Actually, you seem kind of bitter about that. Sorry.

Malevolence nodded. "Yes, if you invest a portion of your Narration into the copy, it should work to fool him. Particularly if I tune the suppressor to look as if your power is mostly suppressed." He turned to Cricket, Bat, and Rebus. "Is everyone ready?"

"Very well." Malevolence extended a hand and a device appeared in it. "This right here is a device that will make you invisible. It wasn't found in Tam's search of me so it should hold up to Malan's scrutiny." He handed it to Cricket. "Tam, make the copy of yourself. I'll teleport a suppressor in and hook it up." He turned to Bat. "Yes. when I spring the trap, Cricket will use his powers to restrain Malan, then I'll teleport you in and you'll use the Notblades to incapacitate him."
