"Like heck you will," Bat muttered.

"WHAT?? NO!" Bat bolted upright.

"TAM--" He gestured wildly, helplessly. "Are you really CONSIDERING this?"

"Of course I am. It makes a lot of- whoa, Bat, calm down! It'll go just fine!" She took his wrist in her hand. "Relax."

Just now, Halcyon The Only said:

Bat stared at him, horrified. "You're just going to--- Cricket, I thought you cared about her!"

That made her pause.

"It's not convincing to Malan if she's awake. Though... maybe we could make it seem like she just became conscious again."

Malevolence nodded. "I see. Well, I could rig something with Nullite to put her unconscious. Even if we don't go with this plan, we'll have to have some reasonable method for me to 'contain' her."

"MORE THAN ANYTHING!" he screamed suddenly. "DO YOU THINK I WANT TO PUT HER IN DANGER? DO YOU THINK I...." he broke down in tears, suddenly sobbing.

She nodded. "True. Do you think something that looked like Nullite would work? I don't want to be completely helpless."

"She'll need to be Enulled, at least at the beginning." he said, gasping softly, trying to regain composure.

"You--- you're just going to blindly trust this guy?" He gestured to Malevolence. His frantic was growing. "Tam, what did you do to yourself?"

She'd . . . she'd never seen him like this.

What was going on?

He wouldn't be able to make her see. He wouldn't be able to make anyone see. Nobody would listen to him.

Why had he ever tried?

He swallowed hard, looking away. "Forget it," he managed, plopping back down on the ground. He curled up and dropped his head onto his arms.

"Let's all calm down." Malevolence pulled out a pencil and a notepad. "So current plan is: Tam is enulled or knocked unconscious. Cricket is disguised as Stone. Bat will be teleported in after Malan makes his appearance." He pointed at Bat. "You think it's too dangerous for Tam. Please, tell me how we can mitigate this risk to improve the plan."

Bat didn't move. Even if he had ideas, nobody would care. They would all be dumb ideas anyway.

Tam tried to calm her pounding heart.

"Malevolence . . . I don't think . . . I don't think now is the best time," she said quietly.

"Bat?" she whispered from where she sat. "Please, tell me what's wrong."

He looked at him sadly for a second, then sighed, grabbing a knife from his belt and turning, hurling it into the tree behind him extremely hard, accompanied by a roar of anger.

Fael looked around nervously, stepping forward. "I... what if I served as a stand-in for Tam? He hasn't seen her before, has she?"

She scooted over and put a hand on his arm. "Please tell me . . . I just want to help . . ."
