Bat should have done something faintly heroic. He should have thrown the knife, or at least turned and run.

But he froze. Again.

He was going to die.

Still breathless and dizzy, she Narrated the gun away, and a knife appeared, pressed to his neck instead.

"Don't . . . touch them," she said rather shakily.

Stone froze, showing genuine fear for once. He tried to Enull her, but found his power blocked by Cricket’s, who was still screaming. Then he shot Bat in the shoulder.

?

Bat stumbled back, panic and adrenaline suddenly overtaking him.

But nothing had happened.

He frowned and examined his shoulder. The bullet had only pierced the first layer of skin— the tattoos in the area had collapsed in, as if they’d somehow kept the bullet out like some kind of armor.

Cricket.

He moved over to cricket. “Cricket, you okay?”

He screamed again, one hand clutching his eye, well the other desperately tried to fend off Stone.

Bat also tried to aid in this with his dagger. Rather clumsily. He was strong, though.

A guttural scream escaped Tam's throat as she watched from the ground nearby.

It was all too much- Bat and Cricket in danger- not to mention herself-

She just . . . reacted, releasing a burst of Narrative power without thinking about what she was actually doing.

One moment, Stone was standing over Cricket, holding the knife, and the next-

(TW: blood)

Spoiler

Well, needless to say that the rest of his body was no longer able to function, now that his head had completely vanished.

His body thumped to the forest floor, blood pouring out and pooling around the neck.

Bat raised his knife again when the energy shield went down, but then…

then…

oh bloody narration, that looked awful.

He turned away, repressing the impulse to throw up.

heh.

She stumbled over, bleary-eyed, and absently healed him.

She then half lowered herself, half-collapsed onto the ground beside him, staring up at the tree canopy with half-lidded eyes and gasping for air.

Why don't I just . . . heal your eye? she said somewhat laboriously.

She did so.

Stone had been an Ennuller, Bat realized. A new level of horror glazed what had just happened.

Oh, rax, he should have worried more.

Focus. She wouldn’t hurt you. You know she wouldn’t…

but ALL THAT BLOOD…

She looks tired. What if she got hurt?

She was with Cricket. Cricket would help her with that. He was her friend too, and probably a better one. He’d—

Bat stopped thinking to deposit his breakfast beside a tree, then walked off into the forest to clear his head.

you’re prolly in a different setting than bat and tam and cricket and stone

Template’s shell becomes gold. “Everything is meaningless. What should I do, then?”

Rebus watches the fight, but it’s over before his Author returns. He grits his teeth, but returns to his projects. The beacons would tell him if he was wanted.

“You find meaning,” she whispered. “Find meaning wherever you can. Squeeze it out of the ground, you little worm! Find it wherever you can! It won’t last long.”

She threw back her head and laughed until she coughed.

Her vision flitted in and out of focus.

She could have just used Narration to clear her head, but strangely . . . she found she didn't want to.

She really just wanted to . . . to lay there for a while . . .

Bat came back about five minutes later, feeling lightheaded. He knelt next to Tam— not too close, though.

“You don’t look so good.”

He avoided looking in Stone’s direction. Well, what was left of—

STOP THINKING ABOUT THAT.

She turned her head to look at him. ". . . How's your shoulder?"

He rubbed it. “Ah… it’s fine. Not even bleeding… I… think my tattoos… did something.”

It was too weird to think about.

“Take this.” He handed her a small, pale leaf. “It should stabilize you, just in case.”

For a fleeting moment, he questioned why he was so scared of her. Just for a moment.

He took her hand to check her pulse— yup, she was indeed living, and she didn’t seem to need anything but a nap. That was good, he thought to himself. He blew her hair off her face so she wouldn’t wake up with hair in her mouth, then sat back and busied himself with cleaning his dagger and sorting everything in his bag again.

Then… it meant something? Telse died, all of Welderan’s death, had purpose? He said, glimmers of hope shining in his eyes.

“Mission?” He frowned. “What do you mean?”

Well, I hope you don't imagine such a threat will go un-investigated.  Plans are already being made to find and eliminate this mysterious entity of yours.

Rebus nods. “You have time to consider it. Short times can be long, and long short. It depends how much detail they contain.”

“Of course.” Rebus smirks. “I’m made for it, now. What I need from this quest is buy-in and plot. The Dreamsmith’s trial doesn’t only forge the blade earned.” He briefly considers what his trial might be, then continues. “The item is acknowledged as powerful, meaning it is allowed to destroy, to defeat. Plotblades and Dreamsmith weapons are given much more leniency than Narration, less likely to be ignored or no-selled. Too much strength, unchecked, weakens your ability to make lasting impacts.”

"So you want authority?" whispered the wind. "A piece of each of us, to tie us into your plots?"

The Wise Judge stared at Selppaenip with utter confoundment. "Wizard," He said finally, turning his attention to the accused. "Are you certain you do not wish to request a different lawyer? This one does not seem... experienced."

The Great Wizard remained silent, and eventually the Wise Judge sighed. "Very well. Which charges do you plead guilty to?" ... stood, repeating what he'd said to Selppaenip. The Wise Judge nodded. "In that case, we shall focus our trial on those claims you have pled not guilty to. Prosecution, call your first witness."

The Adventurer's lawyer stood dramatically. "As my first witness, I call... Platypus!"
@Ookla the Arbiter

"He definitely existed." Subversion started writing in her book. "But I have no idea where he is right now, and can't find him without my Narration. Can't quite remember his lore either, aside from the dehydration problem."

"You have to tell them," said 656, clutching Subversion's wrist and staring intently at her. Her earlier reticence seemed to have vanished completely. "You have to tell them I'm not crazy. Something took my brother. Erased him."
