Am I still blue?” asks Template.

Yes.

Cricket's jaw dropped. No... no personality? No nothing? Tam, that could be dangerous. That man is the ideal assassin.

She laughed. No, not like that. He genuinely has no sense of self, and he doesn't know anything. He's like a child, more or less.

Ah . . . that's a long story . . . Shoe said carefully.

Cricket raised an eyebrow. That makes no sense, and I know you're saying I'm being paranoid, but that's the perfect front. Regardless, does he communicate with you? Who imprinted him with his identity?

Template thus stays blue, and the experiment is ruined. They continue sitting, unaware of the multiple conversations unfolding in front of them.

I'm not saying you're being paranoid- I just didn't explain it well. And yeah, he talks to me. As for his identity . . . I guess his Author gave it to him? He's extremely susceptible to Narration though, and any detail sort of fades away without renewal.

Ruined? Aw, man . . .

Huh. Strange. Just... let me know what happens to him, and... keep Fael close to you, please. I can't bear if something happened to her.

You can tell him. I don’t care.

We have time, Nethek said.

Her mind flitted briefly to what Fael'd said about him and her sister.

I will, she said reassuringly. Don't worry.

Uh- no. Just ignore that.

He looked sadly at Beosta. Okay.

Then he turned back to Nethek and spent the next while recounting the past few days. He told Nethek and Eva everything, and he when he talked about their mother he tried to be as delicate as possible.

Well, maybe he didn't tell them everything. He left out the parts with the priest.

By the time he was done, he'd sat on the couch again and was a little misty-eyed.

Thanks. I took everything from them. Time I started making reparations.

Oh, Cricket . . . she said sadly.

I'm so sorry.

Thanks. he said quietly, She... she was everything to me, for a while, and now... now she's gone. Forever. And I don't know what to do. Don't know what to think now. I honor her, and yet... I know she wants me to move on, to continue to live. I'm just not sure if I can do that.

Tam didn't say anything, but to Cricket it suddenly felt like someone were hugging him, even though he couldn't see anything, and would feel nothing if he were to wave him arms in the air in front of him.

The hugging feeling tightened briefly before fading away completely.

He sighed. Tell Fael I forgive her.

Fael?

In case you didn't hear . . .Cricket says he forgives you.

She wondered what he'd meant by that.

Fael gasped and broke into tears. You... you talked to him? she said, between sobs. He forgives me? How did he know?

Tam blinked. Know about what?

Forgive her for what? she asked Cricket.

Fael gasped. I could've saved her! she said desperately. I was too scared, too afraid. I... I thought the hunters would come back, then he came... and... and... she buried her head in her hands.

She knows. he said. He did not want to talk about it.

Ah, okay, well . . . if neither of you want to talk about it, I get it, it's fine, she said gently, floating back over to Fael.

Sequence immediately passed out. The infected flesh was tougher than normal, proving relatively difficult to remove, and once more the bubbling and sizzling seemed to fight against everything it touched.

How much do you want this wound to stick around?

Sain grinned. “No, I think I’m ok. I can defend myself. Plus, if he’s coming after me for my chaos, I’m pretty sure I contain the destructive zombie powers within me pretty well.”

The Scribe set up a very interesting system just in case.

Pyk turned. “That’s not good. Different…” he cocked his head. “I would not listen to it.” He paused. “Do not trust him. Over my life, I have learned the power that empty promises can have over people, and I know firsthand the effect of fear mongering, whatever the fear is - be it fear of harm or fear of becoming worse. The voice has no proof of what it can do.”

A note fluttered down to Asher. Besides. I can protect you.

The note shifted. Hmmmm… well, Asher, there is one solution to your problem with the voice. Since your suit has Nullite in it, if you simply close your visor, any Plot manipulation like Narration won’t be able to affect you!

What Pyk would say here is that rumors are more often used as tools than used as messengers. They are a means to an end. Do not give in.

The Nullite, of course! A new variable, destroying the perfect dichotomous situation within him.

...the Nullite is causing chaos.

Charles's voice was extremely skeptical.

"So what do you think?" Subversion asked. "Do you have an opening for me?"

Are you certain you would be willing to accept the restrictions necessary to participate in such a program? Narrators in their natural state are a good deal from safe.
