Pyk nods at them.

If the voice persists… then it must be something more… natural. Which, though worrying, is easier dealt with.

oh well how comforting. We might be plauged by some natural demon. well cade are you not a demon. oh... uh well... I mean another demon. I'm the only demon allowed to speak to Asher. That's a law.

It depends on the spirit. Sometimes they grant special powers or offer information. Sometimes… they bring people back from the dead. Sometimes they aren’t looking for anything and just want to help.

His arm tightened around Beosta ever so slightly.

You can just bring people back from the dead? he said, shaking his head. This place is so strange.

You can’t just bring people back from the dead. That’s something that only happens in legends. Well… I thought. You have to be approached by the right spirits. All of them at once.

You . . . thought?

He wondered how much Nethek actually knew about what their father had been doing.

Yeah. I thought the legends were exaggerations. But… things started getting weird. I’d hear voices at night.

Um . . . okay. Make your own choices, then.

She Narrated him to be able to do so.

Template, given undirected autonomy by the Narration, gets up. “Thank you. I am going to figure out what I am. Goodbye. Thank you for the cookies.”
How am I to improv if not given prompts? Also, is there actually a way out of there?

Do you want prompts? And no. Not if you want to go off-world.

Hang on, where are you going?

That was the main idea of the character, but I can fully improvise, at least until someone less benevolent gets ahold of them.
Template, almost to the door, stops. “Good question. Who would know what I am, do you think, and how do I get to them?”

Um . . . okay, hang on That's kind of a loaded question- sit back down.

Ah, okay.

Template sits back down, much to the potential bewilderment of others in the room.
Rebus, waiting for the Faustian bargainer to respond, begins to try to twist the plot, or at least his Author, to his favor.

So . . . do you know who made you?

No. I appeared, but I didn’t have anything I needed to do, so I didn’t do anything. Someone - a Narrator I think - appeared and gave me an identity, then made me forget. So before I appeared, I could have forgotten. And Narration is strange. It tugs, and ties in knots, and unravels.

Tam wasn't entirely sure what was meant by that last part.

Well you weren't really created with a purpose in mind. A blank slate. Your name is Template, for goodness sake. I guess you have to figure out who you are for yourself, now that you can make your own decisions.

Template nods. It does seem that way. Thanks to you changing my personality, I can now make my own decisions until the details go away. As a Narrator, I assume you would know about Narration, but are there any experts on it, or any generally wise scholars?

Until it goes away? Narration applied to you will always fade?

And I wouldn't know any experts except other Narrators, no.

At your father's house, then? When did it start?

I started hearing it a couple months ago. But I started feeling things before that. Shivers where shivers shouldn’t be. Eyes watching me. Prickles on my neck.

I'm an expert in Narration! Said a mysterious voice.

That sounds . . . he searched for the right words.

Well . . . nevermind.

He tried to come up with something else to say.

Template nods again, speaking out loud by accident. “It seems like it. I went back to being vague, and I remembered my name. But maybe that was caused by something else? I don’t have a lot of data.”

Template is not detailed enough to be particularly surprised. “Good, that is helpful. What could make it feel magnetic and restructure someone easily, but fall apart eventually? Has that ever happened to anyone else?”

Narration usually falls apart when wielded against the characters of another Author. But I've never heard of a case like yours.
