Sequence nodded, looking queasy and miserable. “I don’t recall suffering any, but I have…” She shifted uncomfortably. “Bonded a withergiest before. And seen such injuries on others.”

Well, fortunately it doesn't seem this wound has spread enough such that removing it directly would be problematic. The doctor screwed up his face in concentration, isolating and slicing away the infected essence.

The traveler blinks. “That’s all?”

Subversion nodded. “Indeed! With all these new Enullers running around, I figured I should see what getting Enulled feels like.”

“I see.” The traveler doesn’t seem convinced.

“I am Omen.” The bird’s beak does not move as it speaks. “Do not be alarmed by my appearance. Dreams are not always nightmarish.”

"'All?' Bacon laughed sardonically. "Yes, that's all. Only locked in that awful castle for a couple hundred years- or more- with just Onyx for company. Hardly a punishment at all!"

Which name? Tam asked in his head.

You're welcome, I hope. We'll see what happens.

It's been fun to finally meet you, by the way.

"Ah yes! Did you have a name?"

It's good to meet you, Nethek! Shoe said with uncharacteristic enthusiasm. I'm not . . . from around here, I guess.

I have not named that planet, but how aware is Nethek of other planets and such? :P

Allllll goooooood!

Not at all. Yet.

“Fair enough, fair enough.” Nethek glanced at Beosta again. “You… you’ve visited Father, I’m guessing?”

Beosta looked away. She didn’t feel like having this conversation ever.

Sylas laughs at the remark and finally gets up, his normally formal appearance disheveled due to his button up shirt being untucked and scarlet vest unbuttoned from his fall. The vials in his bandolier are also shattered. "Oh, curse the Emperor!" He exclaims looking down at his shattered spectacles.

“You’re a foreign spy, then,” the man asked. His eyes narrowed. “We don’t tolerate your kind.”

Rebus doesn’t want that, so he stalls. “Antimatter is always useful! Accept apparently for alarming Narrators, so probably it’s useless against anything on their tier level. Do you want a cough drop? You sound like you need one, Faust. Can I call you that?” Then he realizes a loophole. “You ask for my faith in your abilities? If that’s your condition, I accept! If there’s other things, I would like full disclosure and no unrevealed tricks. Legal battle with exact words is fine, but we can’t say there were secret conditions or break the deal. And I’d like to actually know what you’re offering, and what this thing you seek is.”

Template. Template sends back. “I think I did something. Am I supposed to be able to talk like this?

No, Tam replied, amused, I'm doing this. Not you.

“Great glory, boy! You’re in Teshin, south side. The city’s on the north end of Riveneta Country. Is that enough, or are you some inept worldhopper who needs the name of the gloryborne planet?”

“Yes. Later. Nethek, have you tried Eva’s cookies? They’re—“

“He was messing with the spirits, Bea.”

Beosta glanced around for the spirits. She couldn’t see them (but Shoe can). “The… the spirits?”

”For a long time, apparently. Years.”

The same spirits as earlier?

Messing with them? What does that mean?

Sequence immediately passed out. The infected flesh was tougher than normal, proving relatively difficult to remove, and once more the bubbling and sizzling seemed to fight against everything it touched.

Yes

”He made deals,” Nethek replied. “But something went wrong when you… when you…” killed Gaioh. That was when he started going insane. It got worse after you left, Bea. A lot worse.

Shoe wrapped an arm supportively around Beosta's shoulders.

So, Shoe asked Nethek, changing the subject slightly, What are the spirits, and how would you make deals with them? They don't seem particularly . . . talkative, from what I've seen so far.

@Ookla the Inquisitive

There is a voice that appears in Rebus' head. The voice is sickly sounding, ghostly even. The voice hurts to listen to. "Rebus."  It says slowly. "The Emperor seeks to destroy all of you. You need my help." It's voice, like acid dripping down into your ears.

@Ookla the Dragonslayer

There is a voice that appears in Sain's head. The voice seeps into your head corroding like a venom. The voice hurts to listen to. "Sain."  It says slowly. "The Emperor seeks to destroy all of you. You need my help." It's voice, like acid dripping down into your ears.

Sain grinned. “No, I think I’m ok. I can defend myself. Plus, if he’s coming after me for my chaos, I’m pretty sure I contain the destructive zombie powers within me pretty well.”

The Scribe set up a very interesting system just in case.

Look buddy, give us a second to talk about this and we’ll give you a reply in a second. “Hey pyk there is this dude talking in my head and he says he can bring people back to life and he sounds almost snake like and is like painful to listen to, do you think i can trust him?”

@Ookla the Dragonslayer

Pyk turned. “That’s not good. Different…” he cocked his head. “I would not listen to it.” He paused. “Do not trust him. Over my life, I have learned the power that empty promises can have over people, and I know firsthand the effect of fear mongering, whatever the fear is - be it fear of harm or fear of becoming worse. The voice has no proof of what it can do.”

A note fluttered down to Asher. Besides. I can protect you.

The Emperor stares intently at the bird. "Yes...." he hesitantly says. "Who are you?"

"So..." It seems annoyed. "You let your pain eat at you, leaving them to ruin you. The choice is yours, Asher. You either let the people live, or your sins will." It spits.

The note shifted. Hmmmm… well, Asher, there is one solution to your problem with the voice. Since your suit has Nullite in it, if you simply close your visor, any Plot manipulation like Narration won’t be able to affect you!

5 hours ago, Ookla the Cookie Collector said:

"You can't trust anybody!" It hisses. "If you want help, seek it from me. I only wish to help. For there is rumor that the Emperor seeks to destroy all of you!" It seems angry at your 'Ignorance' now.

What Pyk would say here is that rumors are more often used as tools than used as messengers. They are a means to an end. Do not give in.

"An answer that will convince Subversion that our existence is worth it, I guess."

The Ennuller frowned and extended a hand, pouring power into the wound to freeze it into stasis.

So what is it in Tenth that is upsetting the balance?

"Lock me up," said Bacon glumly. "For goodness knows how long..."

Not often, admitted the Ennuller. Are you volunteering your services?

The doctor waved her hand. Yes, yes. The important thing is that this is how you see the power. What of the soul within you?

The Nullite, of course! A new variable, destroying the perfect dichotomous situation within him.

The Emperor gasps but then reminds himself to stay calm. He continues to fall closing his eyes to keep focus.

The Emperor lands on something hard, and the darkness lifts. Around him a battle rages, although the forms of those fighting is as of yet indistinct.

"So what do you think?" Subversion asked. "Do you have an opening for me?"

“Spirits are the souls of moments,” Nethek replied. “The substance of things that don’t have substance. Like hatred or love expressed in one second. I… don’t know exactly how to get in contact with them. The legends say they approach humans for something to feed on— sometimes emotion, sometimes other things that don’t make sense. Like leaves in certain shapes or a bunch of food. Depends on the spirit.”

The Ennuller that was fused to your soul. This is not their perspective, but yours.

"Eof said there was someone who knew. Or someone who needed to learn? It was all very confusing and quite unhelpful. Thank you for being helpful, by the way."

Interesting, said the doctor. It is of chaotic darkness, certainly. You are familiar with withergeist-corruption injuries, I believe?

Cricket nodded and touched one of the statues. The world shifted. Everything became whole and healthy, just gray, with Cricket's side a blinding light.

Huh. Interesting. So if say, if a spirit approached someone in the shape of a rose, would it be looking for a rose to . . . well, to "feed on," I guess?

Nethek shrugged. Maybe? I think spirits have shapes of their own. I don’t know how they’d ask for something.

Pyk nods at them.

If the voice persists… then it must be something more… natural. Which, though worrying, is easier dealt with.

Shoe shook his head. This is so odd.

What do they offer in return for whatever they're looking for?

It depends on the spirit. Sometimes they grant special powers or offer information. Sometimes… they bring people back from the dead. Sometimes they aren’t looking for anything and just want to help.
