“As long as you don’t rob my family.”

Fael glared. "And why would I do that?" she asked. "I'm no thief, and I'm hardly a fighter. The Blade scared most people off. I'm just a Narrator."

Speaking of your family . . . where'd you aunt go?

You got it.

Cricket nodded, satisfied, glad that maybe something would work out.

Tam snorted, still invisible. Just a Narrator.

Um . . . she realized that Fael would be able to hear her. Please don't say anything about me. I'm trying not to be noticed.

Don't worry, I won't. Fael replied, slightly confused, but going with it. What's wrong?

"No need for that!" she gasped. "Sorry about this."

"Uhhh, sure. Can you send the note now?" Shoe? he sent the Enuller says your trainer demands you do more sessions with him. Sorry.

Fael looked around, blushing when she saw everybody staring at her. "I'm a Narrator." she gasped, rushing it out. "You probably realized that, what with the blade and everything, but I was trying to get some money after my home was... destroyed, and these guys attacked me so I teleported here! Sorry, about it."

As soon as we return to the Silent Halls. You have sent the message?

“That’s convenient. Do you know how to use a sword?”

“Perhaps there is. But she will not find it.” Eof replied.

"Well, how can I help her find it?" Bacon asked.

"Yes. I'm ready." he said, steeling himself. Could he really face Enullers , after what had happened so many years ago? He had to. He had no choice. After all, he was part Enuller, he reminded himself.

Nothing big, there's just someone here I don't trust. He's a newcomer like you.

She nodded. Which one? she asked. The last time my father welcomed a newcomer, my home was destroyed. It wasn't his fault, though. It was came for him.

Owen. The fluffy-haired one.

I know that's not very specific, but he wasn't described very well.

Well, Winds take him. Wait. she thought, and created a soft buzzing noise. Loud enough to distract from Tam's breath.

Heh. Thanks.

You're all good. I respect it if you want to stay hidden. Winds know, those first months after Welderan's death were... awful.

Tam thought for a moment.

You were a bodyguard? Is that what happened? You failed the person you were supposed to protect?

She thought some more.

No . . . that's not right. They died before you became a bodyguard?

She shuddered. Everyone died. My sisters, my father, the entire planet. I became a bodyguard after I realized that the only other way to get easy money as a Narrator was crime, and my father would hate me for that. She wiped a tear away from her eye. He was a good man.

Ah. So I was sort of right.

Fael felt a hand on her shoulder, though she could see nothing.

I'm sorry. That's awful . . . really, Tam said sadly.

“That’s also convenient! I guess I was wondering if you could teach me. Subversion gave me a sword,” the traveler gestures to the sword at her waist. “but didn’t tell me how to use it.

You can’t.” Eof turned his back to Bacon abruptly. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I promised my wife I would not be more than ten minutes late even if the Thread itself was ending and if our conversation drags on any longer I will be. Before you ask, I am aware of what Onyx will do if Subversion kills Nogard.” He began walking away again, more quickly than before. “I’m afraid that sometimes, you must let people come to their own conclusions, act as they see fit, and deal with the consequences.”

Thanks. I feel worse for... other people. They suffered much worse than me.

Tam snapped her fingers, and suddenly both women were expert swordsmen. Swordswomen.

She sighed. Maybe she did have a friend, here. I survived the attack. When they came, and burned the buildings, I pulled myself out of the rubble. I saw him, in the distance, covered in ash, holding... she shuddered, holding my sister's corpse, crying. I knew then, no matter what I suffered, nothing would come close to his pain.

You should know. You're a Narrator after all, Fael.

She laughed. Yeah, Tam. Just trying to make small talk.

Heh. All good.

By the way, I'm not entirely sure what's going on, but don't go near Owen. There's something . . . happening with him. He's looking for Narrators, and I'm not sure why.

He doesn't know any of that though.
