PewterAGoldF Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 Was Adolin carrying his shardblade when he went through the Oathgate? Is Maya walking around as a deadeyes in shadesmar when Adolin summons her as a blade or does she dissapear from Shadesmar? When Syl is not a shardblade is she walking around shadesmar? When Syl is being a shardblade for Kaladin is she living a parallel life in shadesmar? The spren in shadesmar who talk about looking after deadeyes so they dont walk off the edge of the boat would have a hard time doing so if they kept dissapearing and turning up in different places. Could someone clear this up for me, or is it still all speculation? 1
MountainKing Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 Adolin was not carrying his shardblade I believe. Yes,Maya walks around shadesmar following Adolin around. It is unclear if when you summon a shard blade if the deadeye becomes the shardblade fully. Syl is in the physical realm with Kaladin when she is not a blade. She becomes the blade. 1
RShara she/her Posted April 21, 2018 Posted April 21, 2018 Yes, Adolin had his Shardblade but did not have it summoned when he went through the Oathgate. I believe the deadeyes stay where they are in Shadesmar, or appear in the Physical Realm, then reappear where they were in Shadesmar before they were summoned. Otherwise Notum having his grandfather in the hold of his ship wouldn't work. And Brandon talks about if you were on another planet and summoned a Shardblade, it might take a few years because of the limitations of the speed of light. When Syl isn't a Shardblade, she's in the Physical Realm with Kaladin, floating, walking, playing with windspren, etc. When Syl is a Shardblade, she's just the Shardblade. 1
ScavellTane Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 I don't think unsummoned blades appear as deadeyes in Shadesmar. I think they remain in the Physical Realm. They're just invisible as Syl, Pattern and Ivory are invisible to everyone else except their Radiants. Deadeyes are formerly Bonded-spren that are intentionally, physically left in Shadesmar. 1

Then why is Maya in Shadesmar while Adolin can summon her?

Quote Questioner [PENDING REVIEW] Do deadeyes disappear in Shadesmar when they are summoned to the Physical Realm? Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW] Yes, mostly. Source.
CrazyRioter she/her Posted April 22, 2018 Posted April 22, 2018 (edited) They are there when unsummoned, like Captain Ico's father. Also apparently they return to the same location in Shadesmar as they were before they were summoned when unsummoned, otherwise shutting them up wouldn't work very well. Apparently Maya didn't have anyone that wanted to keep her from wandering around. Edited April 23, 2018 by CrazyRioter
Leyrann Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 Huh. I just realized. People only found out how to summon and dismiss Shardblades several decades after the Recreance, so until then there were no deadeyes.

I imagine broken oaths would have happened in the past, causing a deadeye. just not on such a grand scale. It also depends in an element of them stays in Shadesmar or not when unsummoned.
ScavellTane Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 (edited) If bonded-dead-blades appear as Deadeyes in Shadesmar would we not have at least saw one around the Thaylen Oathgate spren? Edited April 23, 2018 by ScavellTane
Draigon Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 Deadeyes tend to be drawn to the Shadesmar equivalent of where their blade is in the physical realm, however they could be on the far side o Shadesmar with no noticeable difference in summoning. We learn from Captain Ico that many of the Deadeyes are restrained somewhere safe in Shadesmar to keep them as safe as is reasonable.
ScavellTane Posted April 24, 2018 Posted April 24, 2018 Somehow I got it into my head that they appear as Deadeyes in Shadesmar even when they are summoned. Welp, that just means that Deadeyes only started appearing when the gemstones were added to the blades.
