Drum Corps International

Otherwise known as DCI, Drum Corps International is an organization dedicated to drum corps (pronounced cores plural and core singular but spelled the same for both), which are groups of 150 marching musicians that either play a brass instrument (trumpet, mellophone, baritone, or contra bugle (look it up)), or a percussion instrument (snares, bass drums for the battery, and stationary percussion instruments called the pit). They spend hundreds, almost thousands, of dollars around the end the year to go to tryout camps for the corps they want to perform with, and travel all over the country to go to these camps. With such a small limit on members, most people that try out will not make it, and there is no refund. When a person makes it, they sign a contract and officially become a member of that corps. They spend the entire summer riding around the country in tour buses, practicing and performing the same 10/11 minute show over and over again (this, too, costs lots of money). The job is non-paying, unless you are a staff member, and it is very rigorous. Oftentimes, the corps rehearses no matter the weather conditions. When the corps stops traveling, they don't stay in a hotel but rather in a high school gym near where they will be performing. Only 12 corps make it to finals of the last competition (however it is not required to have gone to every competition throughout the entire summer-that would be impossible).

I was wondering if anyone on this website has heard of DCI before. If so, then this is the place to talk about it.

What are your favorite corps? What is your favorite show? What do you think this year's season will be like? Do you think the Bluecoats deserved their win? (I do)

As someone who was in marching band 3 out of 4 years in high school, I've heard of DCI and the prestige associated with it and the incredibly rigorous... well, everything required of its players, but from your post I can tell you know a lot more about it than I do. The only other thing I can really say is that I love watching marching bands and drum corps perform and will bite anyone who says it's not a sport.
