I couldn't help but notice the absence of an essay from Khriss on Nalthis and its magics in Arcanum Unbounded. The real-world reason for its absence is obvious, but what in-world reason could there be for Khriss to not include an essay on one of the core Shardworlds of the Cosmere?

It is because there is no chapter about Nalthis in this book. So it won't be mentioned here. But in the next related Warbreaker novel, there will probably be one. Same as Vax. The essays are only relevant to the story about to be introduced in the Arcanum Unbound.

I don't think it's "Kriss didn't write it" but "we didn't get to see it". She probably has essays for everything important but we only get to see things related to the book content - compare Stormlight Ars Arcana; I think we're getting more of one essay as more books come out.

I've said this before but I'm pretty sure there's no mystery here. It is solely because there's no Nalthis story here and it would look weird to have an essay on the system followed by nothing. I do not think there is any significance here.

It's a shame, because I really really want to see Khriss' opinion of Nalthis and what goes on there. It always seems to me to be incredibly underrated in terms of its standing in the cosmere....I mean, add it all up:

* Has a magic system accessible to pretty much all Nalthians, unlike any other magic system we've seen thus far.

* The birthplace of Nightblood, the single most powerful man made artifact revealed in the cosmere thus far.

* Has a society directly and actively influenced by a Shard unchecked by any other Shard that we know of, via the Returned

* Home to worldhoppers who are knowledgeable enough about both the cosmere and Investiture to hack other magic systems, such as creating Nightblood to emulate shardblades from Roshar along with Vasher being able to sustain himself via Stormlight instead of Breath.

I mean, there are a lot of things that make Nalthis incredibly interesting and significant from an in-universe perspective, and I imagine Khriss has found plenty of reasons to find Nalthis fascinating. Also, I really want to know if she and Vasher have ever crossed paths, and what that interaction looked like.

I even thought Brandon confirmed something to that effect not too long ago?

Yeah. He was going to try to find time to write a Nalthis short story but there wasn't enough. I'm sure we'll get a Nalthis essay with the next short story collection.

But when will that be? Even with his pace first he has to write all those short stories to get them in the collection. I think a safe bet is at least 10 years for something like that :(

On the other hand by then we could know more Shardworlds which would mean more essays...

Mmhmm. Try to remain positive though. Next time maybe we'll have essays on Braize, Ashyn, Nalthis, Vax, Yolen, and maybe a few more. It's easy to lose sight of the fact that we're getting these books relatively quickly on the scale of fantasy writing speeds. If someone who wrote even a little bit more slowly than Brandon was trying to pull off the cosmere alone, I'd say they were crazy.

Double post to assuage everyone's fears:

BrandosSmolder:
/u/mistborn any chance we will hear from Khriss about Nalthis?

Brandon:
I got this question tonight at the release party.
Yes, there's a good chance. I'll try to slip it in somewhere.

So we may be getting this sooner than the next short story collection. I personally though he should have done it in Arcanum Unbounded and put it with a little excerpt from Warbreaker advertising that its free to read on his website, but the past is the past.
