I just now realized this is a joke on my own sig.

I'm an idiot sometimes.

This just made the whole thing about five times as funny.  XD

I would like at this point to disclaim that I had nothing to do with the making of The Only Joe's signature, and in fact originally thought it was a variable one that pulled the name of the person looking at it like Mestiv's does.

There's an electorate in Victoria called Batman so we literally have The Honourable Member for Batman in our Parliament :D

Exactly. And judging by what I've heard of the diamond industry, I wouldn't be enthusiastic supporting it, even if I could afford to. If my significant other proposed with something that meant a lot to both of us—for instance, if our first date had been to see Deadpool and they dressed up like Deadpool, got down on one knee and held up a chimichanga, I'd be stoked.

:D

i honestly don't understand girls who obsess over diamonds/the size of the diamond in their engagement ring. It's a shiny rock. Cool. You're also carrying around like thousands of dollars on your finger........

Does anyone know a quick way to earn $300? I have to pay off a fine.

Entirely related note, I found out that my city's police department and/or legal system is corrupt and greedy. In the state of Oregon, it is not illegal to drive through a parking lot without parking, unless you are in Newberg or Gresham. It's a stupid law, with a hundred dollar fine, unless you take a Diversion course, which basically means you pay $50 and take an 8 hour 'High Risk Driving Safety Course'. And of course, pay the $250 Court Fee. There's a $250 dollar fee, to be declared innocent. Or guilty. Either way, if you get pulled over, whether or not it's your fault, you get dinged $250. If you get accused of a crime, appear in court and get found innocent, it's $250. As far as I can tell, Newberg is the only city in Oregon with that High of a fee.

It's illegal to drive through a parking lot?!

uh, sell some things on eBay?

Local and state governments in the US are always out to get more money from their constituents, and so random things like driving through a parking lot or accidentally running a red light net absurdly heavy fines. It's nothing more than an excuse to collect money, not a law passed to help keep the people safe or anything silly like that. <_<

:/

i know here, if you're in the middle of the intersection when the light goes red, it's not counted as running a red light, only if you enter the intersection on a red.

Yay for corruption! Hooray for the collapse of civilisation! Down with democracy!

I actually got this reference because we learned about Batman in school about a month ago...

I am feeling very god about myself right now.

Also, I'm still sad that Bhathal (the Greens member for Batman) didn't win that seat. She was so close.

Uhhh... No it's not (not in Sydney anyway). That's what they have orange lights for - to warn you it's about to turn red so you shouldn't go.

Sorry, let me clarify. When you're turning right you can go a little into the intersection on green and wait for the oncoming traffic to clear; if the light goes red while you're in the intersection you can still turn right on the red (you have to or you block traffic). You just can't both enter and exit the intersection on red, turning right.

Not that many Oregon tyrants are benevolent. Vondra maybe, Funtimes randomly, Altermind(by post-Calamity definitions) if you're smart enough, Rainmaker if you're a useful epic.

I want to see Gandalf actually directing traffic (like when lights are down), by telling people that they "shall not pass" and the next lot to go should "run, you fools".

Oh, we're talking about driving now? Allow me to share a tale of sheer idiocy in Utah, USA:

So I pulled up to a red traffic light yesterday. I was the front person in the right lane of a road that had two regular lanes to go straight through the intersection plus one lane only for people turning left. The light turns to a green left arrow. So what should happen next is basically like this diagram (only the yellow and black cars are relevant):

Turns_NV.jpg

At least, it would be if Utah drivers had any common sense or knowledge of American traffic laws... The people in the straight-through lane beside me (a train of like 5 cars!) just bulled their way through the intersection, heedless of the fact that it was not their turn and the left-turners on the other side would have been completely justified if they had run them over.

They drive on the left side in Cyprus too. I've been there once on holidays and rented a car for a day... it was weird to have everything on the wrong side :P but I did't cause any accidents and no one even honked at me, so I'm proud of myself ^^

I cannot believe The Economist asked this question.  Language warning, for those of you who'd like one.

And the internet overreacted again<_<

Fine, so the economist asked a question that has little to do with school debt or being coddled moochers. It's great to see an article add another dimension to millennials.

Except that millennials seem determined to maintain the stereotype.

Overreaction or not, it was a stupid question. The level of debt millennials have had to take on, coupled with the generally low-paying jobs and high living expenses they have, should have made the answer to "Why aren't millennials buying diamonds?" so obvious that the question need not be asked.

Posted

It's also just a stupid question. Why aren't millennials buying turtles? Why do millennials eat yoghurt? Why aren't millenials buying diamonds?

I don't think so. There's an aspect of diamond buying where it is not done because millennials think they are worthless. This would have implications for the economy of diamond selling (the Economist writing about economy matters? Gasp!)

And being in debt does not necessarily mean no disposable income (Hamilton once called national debt a "blessing." Jefferson disagreed but had huge debt and managed to own a plantation. Previous generations, instead of having school debt had/have mortgages. Soul crushing debt is not a new condition)

Then why not gear the article in that direction—"Millennials Aren't Buying Diamonds—What That Means for the Global Economy"? Granted, I haven't read the article, but if it is indeed more about what economic impact the lack of diamond purchases by millennials will have, then "Why Aren't Millennials Buying Diamonds?" is not only misleading, but also asking to be taken out of context and mocked.

That, unfortunately, is due to the concept of Twitter advertisement. Simple and click-baity. At least it wasn't a list. "Ten reasons millennials do not buy diamond: number seven will blow your mind!"

And reason number seven? "They have no money." Oddly enough, it's the same reason as number 6 and number 4. :P

Yeah, reason number seven is never nearly as mind blowing as advertised.
