Superhero secret identities are weird.

I mean, think about it. The superhero has a secret identity; that's a trope of the genre. A standard story is the hero tryign to keep their life secret from their loved ones, for their own protection.

This makes no sense.

I mean, seriously! I have had this issue with superhero fiction for a long time, but honestly! There's even a line in the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films where he says that he can't tell MJ who he is because "If my enemies found out who I was, they would hurt you to get to me". That seems to be the line usually brought out to explain why heroes don't tell their friends and fmaily who they are.

In what world does that make any sense? How does telling your friends and family who you are put them in danger, unless you don't trust them not to blab about it?

In fact, it makes them less safe because, if your enemies do decide to target them, they aren't going to expect it, and they will have no idea why it's happening to them. At least if you tell them "Hey, bee tee dubs, I'm Heroman, so, you know, super villains might try to kill you. Just FYI," they might think to pack some mace or a tazer in case VillainGuy tries to use them as a bargaining chip.

I understand the problem with secret identities, because really knowledge only ever helps people unless they aren't... competent enough to deal with it. Although at that point it could be argued the hero is helping himself by avoiding the trouble. However, don't you go dissing Heroman.

Same here. I always get worried when questions like "how long would it take for such-and-such a wound to bleed out" and "would the wound be gushing or oozing" come up because I just know the NSA perks up at searches like that. <_<

Almost relevant song

If people who worked for the NSA had a sense of humor I am sure they would have conversations like "Someone googled how to make a bomb, fastest way to kill someone with a knife, nubile redheads and how to make chimichangas?"  "Thats just a writer, Tom." but the greatest joke here is the idea that NSA would have a sense of humor, that just discredited the rest of the joke.

And I probably got the NSA watching me from that post in which I also called them a bunch of humorless voyeurs. Whoops.

Thats meta...

As to superheroes and them being LGBT, I was having a debate with my friends about Marvel vs. DC. Somehow it degenerated into an angry argument about whether or not Poison Ivy was lesbian or pansexual. I seem to have http://nerdreactor.com/2015/03/05/harley-quinn-lesbian-poison-ivy/] won, but not without some very strange discussion. Like whether or not the fact that Harley Quinn is her girlfriend counts because she's basically a dryad now and has lost most of her humanity. I came away from this debate and research thinking much more highly of Poison Ivy now, and I think I found a new favorite superhero to replace Cap. *mutters something about Hydra*

Apparently I do not know how to rename URLs.

First of all, I didn't realize 'Heroman' was actually  a thing. It's always sad when a name is derived from sarcasam.

On a side note, I saw an anime character with a name ending in -man, and it reminded me of a show I used to watch, and love, as a kid.

..I mean, seriously. I remember absolutely nothing about it, other than the name and the main character. And I think he had, like, a 30 minute time limit on how long he could use his powers or he would turn evil...?

If anyone rememebrs it more clearly, let me know, because damnation, now I'm curious.

Oh don't worry, it's one of the lesser known superheroes Stan Lee was involved with.

Eh.

Stan Lee is alright, don't get me wrong! But the more I read about comic culture, the more convinced I am that Jack "The King" Kirby earned that title fair and square.

Frankly, I could tell you barely anything about how important who was to the industry. So I don't exactly care either way.

I would say no one does. You always end up with things like "Bob Kane didn't REALLY invent Batman!" And so on.

To quote from a business meeting today: "No point in having an elephant if you can't chain it and control it in time."

You work at a very interesting business.

To be fair, I understand the sentiment. I mean why give your pet elephant its personal TARDIS, if it won't listen to you, no matter where it is in time.

That feeling when your sister is manually going through a long chain of characters, looking for some specific pattern of aminoacids. Then you came by and think "Oh, that's one easy. I could write a program which solves that in 5 minutes...that is, if I knew regular expressions.". I still gave her some tips to improve her way of searching, but it still hurts me. I should've been able to do this :|

EDIT: I looked up some basics of regex and used some regex online site - I was able to find the only candidate... but by the time I did this she already found it :| At least I proved that there is only one, though :D

Or states of body decay, or fast acting paralytics. And that's before discussions about RP...

You forgot "Tearing out your hair and wondering if it's a good idea for you to write this thing after all."

I think that just should be written under all the categories listed in the chart, personally. :P You know, "binge snacking... while tearing out your hair and wondering if it's a good idea to write this after all."

Sounds about right. :P

Also, I have a brilliant plan for financial security: Charge patrons a dollar every time they blame the library for a child's school project being stalled. Right now, the favorite complaint is our carpeting upgrade that's blocking them from reaching the stacks, but I expect to encounter many more methods of shifting blame very soon.

Fun fact: Dan Wells said at a signing once that while doing research for his book "Ruins," he thinks he probably ended up on some sort of government watch list for Googling "How big is a nuclear weapon and how hard is it to hide" XD

All of the above.

The worst part is that most of my old writing was posted to a wiki.

People still read it sometimes.

This made me laugh so hard. I just saw someone refer to baby killdeer as "AT-ST walkers."

Do you see the resemblance?
