Orlion Blight he/him Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Yeah, I believe "brain weasels" were introduced to the Shard by Kaymyth.
Kaymyth she/her Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Brain weasels are the worst. *hugs Twi* Just know that I love "A Kind of Magic" and I think you are an excellent writer. (Random side note: does anyone where know the "brain weasel" expression originated? I'm curious.) Yeah, it was me that introduced it to the Shard. It's a common phrase used by my circle of friends, though, so I didn't invent it.

When the first man crawled out of the primordial slime and paid his taxes and made stew*, he wondered if all of the primordial critters would think he was an idiot for tossing a bunch of ingredients in a pot and cooking them until they all tasted like each other. *One free internet for anyone who can guess what this is referencing.

Is it, by any chance, a nod to Diana Wynne Jones's "Tough Guide to Fantasyland," specifically the entry on STEW? STEW, according to "The Tough Guide to Fantasyland" STEW (The OMTs are thickand savoury, which translate as "viscous" and "dark brown") is the staple FOOD in Fantasyland, so be warned. You may shortly be longing passionately for omelette, steak, or baked beans, but none of these will be forthcoming, indoors or out. Stew will be what you are served to eat every single time. Given the disturbed nature of life in this land, where in CAMP you are likely to be attacked without warning (but see BATH), and in an INN prone to be the centre of a TAVERN BRAWL, Stew seems to be an odd choice as staple food, since, on a rough calculation, it takes forty times as long to prepare as steak. But it is clear the inhabitants have not yet discovered fast food. The exact recipe for Stew is of course a Management secret, but it is thought to contain meat of some kind and perhaps even vegetables. Do not expect a salad on the side. @Mailliw: I have been meaning to watch that movie. I've heard good things. Edited June 2, 2016 by Sunbird

Delightful Posted June 2, 2016 Author Posted June 2, 2016 Hello? It's been awful quiet round here today.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 While those are both excellent, I was actually referencing.... The Princess Bride, the book, not the movie. The narrator often pauses to note things like "When the first human crawled out of the primordial slime, what he had for dinner that night was stew" and "Taxes are even older than stew."
Quiver he/him Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 So. Funny/awkward story for everyone. There's a DC character I'm a really, really big fan of, called Dick Grayson. Non-comic book fans might know him as the original Robin, or as Nightwing, or as that Robin that everyone ships with Starfire. Dick is awesome. Like, seriously. He's almost like DC's version of Spider-Man, which is a pretty great start, but besides that, in terms of character? Imagine a well-adjusted Batman. Dick Grayson is the best, and I will talk about him forever and ever. Funny story, he's a serious ladies man, too. But... I have seen some people complaining about stuff he's gotten up to in his latest series. Or, more accurately, stuff that writers have gotten up to with the character. Specifically, the idea that the writers are queer-baiting the character by having everyone (including himself) comment on how attractive he is, and having his cover identity by "gay French gymnast". Thing is, thinking about it? I'd be cool if Dick was bisexual. I'd actually hate if they pulled an Iceman and retconned him as being secretly gay, because bisexual male heroes are one of the least positively represented groups, and revealing him to be gay would ruin years of storylines related to his love life, but I digress. So, I was kind of curious. Sure, there's slash fiction, but that's fan fiction. I was kind of curious if they was anything in the comics themselves that might support that reading of the character. I got as far as typing "bisexual Dick Gra" before I realized that is not a string of words I want to load into google on a public computer. 5
Mestiv he/him Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 I got as far as typing "bisexual Dick Gra" before I realized that is not a string of words I want to load into google on a public computer. The name Dick is generally something I cannot understand. What was this word used for first: as a name for a person or as a synonym for penis? If the person name was first, then how the hell did it become a synonym of penis? If the synonym was first, then why does anyone use this name?! I don't get it 1

I don't get it I'm sure there probably is some kind of long (and most likely fascinating) etymology behind how Richard="Dick=genetalia... but it is not a topic I have any interest in looking up right now. As another point of humorous and unfortunate superhero names? Green Arro'ws sidekick is called Speedy. He's a heroine addict. 1

I don't get it I never looked this one up, but in ye olde times, there were short knives called dirks - maybe it's a corruption of that?

I always get worried when questions like "how long would it take for such-and-such a wound to bleed out" and "would the wound be gushing or oozing" come up because I just know the NSA perks up at searches like that.
Master Elodin Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 (edited) As to superheroes and them being LGBT, I was having a debate with my friends about Marvel vs. DC. Somehow it degenerated into an angry argument about whether or not Poison Ivy was lesbian or pansexual. I seem to have http://nerdreactor.com/2015/03/05/harley-quinn-lesbian-poison-ivy/] won, but not without some very strange discussion. Like whether or not the fact that Harley Quinn is her girlfriend counts because she's basically a dryad now and has lost most of her humanity. I came away from this debate and research thinking much more highly of Poison Ivy now, and I think I found a new favorite superhero to replace Cap. *mutters something about Hydra* Apparently I do not know how to rename URLs. Hmm. I need to check out that conversation; I've never really thought much of Poison Ivy. Not for lack of trying, really; I liked her in the animated series, but I have kind of a fondness for that goofy "mind control spore" character. But I can't think of any iconic story line she has, the way that the Joker has the Killing Joke, or Two-Face has The Long Halloween. (My favorite villain is the Riddler, and I couldn't name a perfect story for him either... but that's because the character himself is just so perfect that an actual storyline is almost just a bonus : P)
Delightful Posted June 2, 2016 Author Posted June 2, 2016 (edited) Btw you rename URLs as what you want it to appear as [/.url] Without the . in the square brackets. This has (hopefully) been my helpful post of the day. Edited June 2, 2016 by Delightful
Jo and the Bush all/any Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 (edited) It's easier to show what the codes are by using the Code code. For the Code code, do this:
Insert the code here
So the URL or Link code is Words you want linked Which will come out as Words you want linked Edited June 2, 2016 by The Only Joe
Kobold King he/him Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 V's great. I was born a couple of hours late to have a birthday on Guy Fawkes Day. It is something I will regret all of my days.

Quiver he/him Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Superhero secret identities are weird. I mean, think about it. The superhero has a secret identity; that's a trope of the genre. A standard story is the hero tryign to keep their life secret from their loved ones, for their own protection. This makes no sense. I mean, seriously! I have had this issue with superhero fiction for a long time, but honestly! There's even a line in the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films where he says that he can't tell MJ who he is because "If my enemies found out who I was, they would hurt you to get to me". That seems to be the line usually brought out to explain why heroes don't tell their friends and fmaily who they are. In what world does that make any sense? How does telling your friends and family who you are put them in danger, unless you don't trust them not to blab about it? In fact, it makes them less safe because, if your enemies do decide to target them, they aren't going to expect it, and they will have no idea why it's happening to them. At least if you tell them "Hey, bee tee dubs, I'm Heroman, so, you know, super villains might try to kill you. Just FYI," they might think to pack some mace or a tazer in case VillainGuy tries to use them as a bargaining chip. 3

Jo and the Bush all/any Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 (edited) I've been teaching myself how to use the various codes to my advantage, and I am incredibly amused at what you can do with some of them, like quotes. You can change them to say anything you want! Including Times, or who said it: The Only Joe was just born! EDIT: Oops, I meant to edit this into my previous post, not double post. Sorry 'bout that.
