So this is a thought on HOW this happened.

We know he had a spike in his head granting him steel/iron sight. From the last few pages of the secret history we know Spook and he were experimenting with the old steel inquisitor spikes. I predict that the head spike is an old inquisitor spike.

I feel that he has three spikes because of the "pierced by 3 spears" thing (always another secret). I think that he has 2 smaller hidden spike. I think he has one that steals connection, however Spook's journal mentions him finding all but transferring metallic art ability useless (or too difficult to find a use).

So if he got his thread by spiking a living person, I suspect they would need a greater cognitive view, so a cracked mind and spikes. He seems to have feruchemy innately so either he or harmony modified his spiritweb or he merged with a Feruchemist. However the emergence of metalborn (not sure if this term refers to both allomantic and feruchemical abilities but both are almost certainly found in the Southern people) he found a way to bestow the ability on them (control of the cognitive realm perhaps). Perhaps he learned to manipulate the cognitive realm, which gave him the understanding of Identity which he passed onto the Southern Scadrians. I do think the body needed to look like his because of connection(/Realmatics? I think I am using that correctly). Although he could have gotten a cognitive shadow of his bones, perhaps.

I think how he connected the spike to his spiritweb is by getting the cognitive shadow and stabbing his cognitive self with it.

The key to getting between realms seems to be places of high investitude, so I think he may have used Harmony's shard pool (or perhaps the increased fertility of the Elendel basin was enough).

An offhand remark: I think Kelsier pretended to be the Lord Ruler to keep his promise to Fuzz about not toying with the hearts and minds of people, and to Vin as well to make it not all about him.

Ruin sent the inquisitors to kill the keepers and make spikes from them. he got spikes for all feruchemical abilities. kelsier was already a mistborn. So I suppose he should have 16 spikes, one for each feruuchemical ability. unless he allready figured out how to get more than one ability in one spike, in which case there's no telling  how many he may have. As for how he returned, I suppose it's as good a guess as any.

Well, if one for all feruchemy then at least 17. Inquisitor steelsight is abnormally sensitive as is generally observed. And he does have it.

But aren't many feruchemy spikes useless in combat? Ruin mostly needs kill squads.

I don't think he used spikes to give himself full feruchemy. I don't think Ruin got all the feruchemy abilities, only the "useful" ones. I was more interested in the symbolism of the 3 spears. Having looked at my book it seems that the Lord Ruler was stabbed by two spears, and he removed one to stab Kelsier once. Not sure if that helps reveal any secrets.

If I'm remembering correctly, even if not steel the eye spikes grant steel sight. Though I'm pretty sure the other metal I saw used was iron, sooo... But what if Kell's spike is made of Atium? We know there were Inquisitors with Atium spikes and we know Atium can do anything the other spikes can. It also doesn't suffer from hemalurgic decay, which is why I'm leaning towards Atium. You really wouldn't want your only means of being on the physical plane decaying when not in use...

But Kelsier had the Bands...  Probably himself has no powers or his original ones (and the Bands in contact with his skin will give him Steelsight also if He was no more a Mistborn).

I find really unlikely that He pierced his own His to get Steel/Iron powers where there are others less invasive places to put a Spike to get that.

I am still about He filled himself with some attribute that "reforge/keep" his Connection to the Physical realm

I wonder if, instead of a spike giving him back his physical body, Kelsier instead found a way to copy some of what the Ire's sphere was able to do for the Connection to Preservation, and instead found a way to rebuild his Connection to the Physical Realm and/or his original body (though I don't know if that even quite existed then, I can't remember if TenSoon still has his bones, but the flesh would have been gone certainly since it was eaten by TenSoon when he first imitated Kelsier).  The spikes then wouldn't need to be for Connection, but obviously he had at least the one spike for another reason, suspected to be for Steelsight in the case of the eye spike, but they could have been more for the purposes of letting him create the medallions in the first place.  I could totally see Kelsier spiking a Nicrosil Ferring he didn't care about, or who he felt was evil, to take their power and make that possible.

TenSoon has never even met Kelsier before. OreSeur is the one who digested him. And he's long gone as well.

Whoops, thanks. TenSoon did use his bones later, though, so he should know where those are if they weren't lost.
