What is a curveball-level ability? Also, the reason he upgrades people is to give him a disadvantage and the pther person knoews how to use their powers, Parth doesn't. He has to learn how to use the powers, so, he has to big disadvantages.

It's not an offical term. It just refers to powers around the level of what Curveball had, which is to say borderline useless.
Unless the Epics he is upgrading are working together with him or he has multiple powers and is picking off enemies one by one. Pretty easy disadvantages to work around, honestly.

Anyone up for a new writing prompt? If your character (From the RP or outside of it, though if it's not from the RP some backstory might be necessary) were to spontaneously develop Agoraphobia, how would that go?

Hmm. Not exactly WRITING, but...

Sentry, I imagine, would be paranoid about it. She's built around a smug sense of knowing exactly what is going on, everywhere, with everyone, everytime. So spontaneously becoming afraid of the outdoors? Aside from inconveniancing her "benevolent, social dictator" role, it would probably lead her to assume some epic is plotting against her. Again.

I mean, her power doens't require her being outdoors to begin with... but I figure it would descend into a dangerous minds, newspapers-connected-by-strings style room pretty quickly.

I'm... not exactly sure how Lyla would react.

What if Parth kills an epic he is copying? I mean, would the power go away or would he have it forever, unless he removed it from his power storage? :o It would be interesting, don't you think?

So...gonna try begging you guys foe information.

What is the absolute OPPOSITE character type you think of when you think of me?

Realised both my characters in this Rpg seem... similar, in terms of being eccentric, broad characters, and figured I ought to try and at least attempt something different...

So, when my character is done being created, how do I join the action?

You wait for Voidus to sort through what's going on with Salem as he tries to get the story going again :P
Then I'd suggest you hash out who your first interaction is going to be with, preferably a somewhat frequent poster so you don't get stuck waiting for replies.

Sounds like you want a character that is stern, humourless (but not comically so, like Arsenal), perhaps depressed or reserved

Or perhaps, someone well-balanced and average, with no outstanding traits. Almost boring in a way.

So a character the opposite you usually write... To throw out some traits: Extrovert, aggresive/direct, very physical in their approache to things, self-confident to the point of arrogance.

Thanks, both of you! I'm... probably gonna try and do something, with some of those, as soon as possible.

(Probably a vanilla, since... I like vanilla's. They don't shift the balance of power as much an an epic does, which is good for when I -inevitably- fall behind; there isn't  anew player that needs to be accounted for in terms of epics )

...Saying that, though, I did have what I thought would be a neat starting point for an epic character?

So, from what I can tell, most epics -in the books, as well as the RP- seem to have been middle class before they got their powers.

Which, makes sense. There's a reason it's the middle, after all; extremes on either end are... well, extreme.

...So, saying that...

I'm kind of wondering if it would be interesting or fun to show epics from either of those social extremes, and how becoming epics affects them. Let's say you have a homeless guy, who suddenly develops epic powers; what does he do with that? Or, a member of the ultra-rich suddenly discovers that, in addition to her social and monetary advantages, she now has superpowers.

I dunno. Spitballing ideas which, I think would be fun for epic character concepts...

For vanilla's, I'm a little more interested in characters who... whatever skills or carear they had before Calamity, they suddenly find themselves, basically, useless. After all, there aren't enough computers for an IT Tecnician to get steady work, no one is looking for financial advice, the only fashion in Newcago seemed to be neo-noir, so that industry probably shifted a lot.

Posted

yeah it'd be an interesting topic. A whole tonne of careers and skills are now entirely useless. Some professionals can certainly get jobs though, working for governmemt Epics (like Steelheart's upper class).

Posted

@Quiver Well, for the upper class Epics we do have Rainmaker.

As for vanillas, yup a good partion of them would likely be forced to work in factories or fields.

Posted

Doctors, mechanics, engineers and other tradespeople would be pretty useful.

Accountants, managers, bureaucrats, those sorts would be needed in government.

/non-canon: Iconoclast secretely gifts his healing powers to the sick, terminally ill or disabled, restoring them to full health.

....and no, its not just because the handicapped make bad ghouls :P

Sam Trattner doesn't really hate Altermind. She's just an extreme tsundere. She actually has a secret shrine to him in her closet.

Lightwards likes to tie on a cape and run around a room with his arms spread out, pretending to be Steelheart/an airplane.

Backtrack's cowardly persona is an act. By night he clears the streets as a costumed vigilante.

Arsenal was a hippie in his youth.

Inspired by this video. NSFW.

In an alternate universe not far from our own, there exists a young man named Nathan Sperry. But it is not the same Nathan Sperry Funtimes rescued. This Nathan roams the streets of Newcago, a puppet at his side, seeking the man who ruined his life.

One day, he finds him. Fortuity. He's in a casino, surrounded by a crowd of well-dressed sycophants. Nathan pushes past them, takes a seat at the bar, and orders a pretzel.

"Hello," Nathan says calmly, almost pleasantly. "I don't think you remember me."

"You're right," Fortuity says.

"You're not going to forget me anytime soon."

Fortuity laughs. "Already have, slontze."

Nathan takes a bite of his pretzel. He does not break eye contact. As he chews, the puppet opens its mouth. It's voice is harsh, a sinister scratching hiss.

"Whazzup?"

The sycophants laugh.

Fortuity does not. He shies away.

He has seen what happens next.

This is the icon I chose for Florist:

Well, it's inaccurate. Florist's actual icon should be this:

In5YSsz.png

You see, Florist doesn't actually enjoy gardening. The redwoods, the artfully crafted topiaries, the verdant grapevines… they're all a cover. The gardens are just there so that Florist can grow dank weed right under Arsenal's nose.

The only reason why Florist is so laid-back is because he's stoned every moment of the day.

I refuse to believe this is not canon.

Hey, I'm new, but I've been reading the Salem thread and I think I'd like to join it. Is that okay? I don't know how to contact Voidus unless he's on here so... any suggestions? Anyway here's my Epic I guess. Don't be afraid to critic, I'm Very new. It wont hurt me.

Spoiler

Name: Ironforge

Powers: Iron manipulation, Can "sense" where iron is and how much there is in an object, Iron creation, Hyper learning ( can learn any Physical or mental ability so long as he is physically able or capable of doing so), Has three trains of thought simultaneously, Can think and react to things twice as fast as the average human, can liquefy any metal object at will.

Appearance: 5"9' tall, metallic-bronze hair, hazel-brown eyes, runners build, wears jeans, a blue star-wars t-shirt and a trench coat with a cougars baseball cap and silver black runners shoes. He has pale copper skin and wears no weapons.

History: Before Calamity, He was a track runner. Once Calamity struck, he became apart of an Information delivery service, where you run message's between the paying parties. He gained his powers two years ago and has spent those years hiding what he can do for personal reasons, up until a few months ago when someone tried to kill his mother in an alley they were walking down. He attempted to kill the man but ended up killing his mother as well. Now he's determined to gain practice in the one way he wont kill someone, not really, Salem. He spent the last three months walking here from Los Angelas.

Personality: Ironforge is soft-spoken and depressed, but often puts up a show of arrogance and bravado so no one thinks to pity him. He pretends to be cocky and Aloof, but he feels like he has committed some terrible sin and stays awake at night thinking over all the ways things could have gone differently in that alley.

Quirks: Ironforge has a photographic memory and can recall any moment in his life with perfect clarity.

I hope you think he's worth it. I put a lot of effort into making him as powerful/average/Mr. Personality. thanks for listening, please give me some constructive criticism. I admire your work!

Welcome. Now if you're open for criticism and the like here's a first round of questions.
Can he sense iron even after it was alloyed? To what extend can he create iron, both in mass and how much control he has over the shape? What exactly counts as a "mental ability"and how much effort does he need to put into it? Can he just snap his fingers to become a master martial artist, mechanic, librarian, strategist, marksman ect without anyone teaching him? Can he do anything with the metal after he liquefied it, even if it's just turning it solid again?
As for the backstory, between the Rending and the fact that he has some very subtle powers he could use without anyone noticing I don't think that'd really work. I mean even saying he went through his Rending and nobody noticed, through the adictive nature of the powers no matter his reasons the thought on "oh I'm just thinking faster, where's the harm in that?" and from there it would likely spiral out of control pretty quickly.

Posted

Fair points, thanks Edgedancer. Yes he can sense alloys of iron, so long as it has 5% iron in it he can sense it. He creates iron at a steady trickle of powder from his hands, I'd say about a pound of iron every two minutes, and he has fine control over it, I'd say his control over iron is equal to... Her name was lady deathskull right? as for the mental abilities, well i could've put more thought into that. I suppose I meant that he could master anything taught to him much more quickly than a normal person and he (obviously) never forgets a skill he's learned. Yeah I thought I had written that he could solidify metal that he liquefied, but he can control it, regardless of its state of matter, if it has at least a 37% iron amount in it. And your right about the rending, although there is a reason he would avoid using his powers, it involves his weakness, I could give it to you if I knew a private posting area you have... Or if you think its okay that I put his weakness out for all to see. But your still right, he would've gained an annoying personality, even if he couldnt have gone through the rending like most people. Thanks for the critique!

Posted

@ShadowLord_Lith Well, there are always Messages if you just want to tell someone something in private or make sure they notice it. Although I don't think anyone would mind if you actually put his weakness out in the open, that depends entirely on how secret you want to keep it.
