Orlion Blight he/him Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Hey, at least you two are musicians! I just generally do not like musicals
The Invested Beard Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 This was what I was thinking, but I figured I wouldn't be 'That Guy' for once. I am always 'That Guy'. *High five* I'll step in front of this bullet. 1
Zathoth Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 Beware the wrath of my straw dinosaur! Aaaaah!... is it Awakened? *High five* I'll step in front of this bullet. *High Five* I will leave this bullet to you.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 (edited) Up to season 2 of Buffy. Just kind of a general, non-spoiler question…. Is Buffy's mom supposed to suck? I wouldn't call her a great mom by any stretch; on the Parental Grading Scale, I'd say she fluctuates between a C+ and a B- average. She's absentminded, has a self-focused streak, and only exhibits an interest in Buffy when Buffy wants to be alone. But….are we as the audience supposed to give her D's and F's? Because I really don't think that's what she's earned. Edited May 4, 2016 by TwiLyghtSansSparkles

Because I really don't think that's what she's earned. She gets better. The woman is really going through some trauma - recently divorced and she had to move because her daughter burned down a school building. So yeah, there's some actual reasons she's as shaky as she is with the whole parenting thing. But as I said, she gets better. Learning about what's really been going on with Buffy helps a lot.

That's the thing: I don't think she's that bad. I get why she and Buffy have that rift between them, But I'd put her more in the "flawed but trying" category of parents as opposed to the "deserves their child's ire" category.

I think she's supposed to be a point of sympathetic conflict in the early season. A lot of the themes on Buffy are intended as an allegory for growing up; at that age, parents who are well-meaning but also a pain in the chull fits the theme.

I was just wondering if I was getting the right impression, because if she's supposed to come across as a well-intentioned parent with flawed methods, then Whedon nailed it; but if she's supposed to come across as just a bad parent, then she's too sympathetic for that.
Mistrunner Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 Aggressively lip-synching Hamilton doesn't quite cut it. I need to get my room soundproofed. 2
