I... don't think we have an actual topic for this? Which goes to show just how badly the DC Cinematic Universe has been managed, and how apathetic audience reaction to the trailers has been.

...Which is why this trailer is such an improvement.

Cool action, good editing, a nice guitar in the background...

I'm still not convinced this is going to be a great movie, but at least it look's like it could be a fun action film, if nothing else. Honestly, the worst part of this trailer is the emphasis on Batman -necessary, since this is his establishing movie for the DCU- and the fact that it's being forced to do damage control after the last trailer they released.

It looks decent. That trailer is definitely better than the others, but having seen those first, I'm still not convinced this will be a good movie. Decent, perhaps, but nothing more.

Then again, I thought Ant-Man looked formulaic and boring, and it turned out to be one of the funniest Marvel films yet.

I'll wait to see what the audience and critics say, and if they surprise me, I'll rent it. I'm still not excited about this movie, but at least this trailer made it look interesting.

Over the course of the year, I've warmed up from, "Ewww...another Zack Synder film? When will someone take away his director's chair?" to "Well, this looks much better than Suicide Squad."

I know I'll enjoy the movie. As a DC fan, I think it'll be impossible for me not to. But my biggest worry is that it'll be another DC flub, but instead of using too much CGI like Green Lantern, it'll go the path of their competitor's Fantastic Four (2005) and not do anything with the villain until the very end. They've shown us quite a bit of Lex in ads, but I've yet to see anything that would suggest the majority of the movie isn't focused around Batman fighting Superman. This is worrisome. From the trailers, I've got a feeling we're definitely looking at two fights between them; one where Batman gets trounced, so he retreats and researches the crap out of Supes until he stumbles upon Kryptonite, then the second fight where Superman gets trounced by the Kryptonite boosted Bats. This will likely then culminate in Lex taking advantage of the fighting to do some dastardly deeds, and either their shared desire to save humanity, or some exterior force such as Diana and/or Lois will get the two heroes to come to their senses and work together.

Here's hoping its not quite as cookie cutter as that, but even if it is PLEASE involve Lex during the whole movie, and not an introduction in the beginning, followed by him missing for the middle 90%, and then the final showdown at the end. That formula always results in bad superhero movies.

At this point, I have a lot more faith in the MCU's grand plan than anything on the DCU roster.  Which makes me sad, because Barbara Gordon is basically my favorite comic book character ever.

I am not very hopeful for the film but that is more due to the source material than anything. I know a lot of people rave about "The Dark Knight Returns" but with me it always left a bad taste in my mouth. I was never a big superman fan, but I have two friends that are, and upon asking what they liked about him, they gave me a new appreciation of the character. After having that new understanding, then to see him, in my opinion, portrayed very poorly in that comic book made me hate the whole thing (and I haven't even covered the other overtones that I think were horribly done). Then add how the movie seems to treat doomsday and lex luther, and for me that is a definite wait for dvd release to view.

Posted

Yeah...Doomsday is pretty much completely different from what he is in the comics... At least, that's the speculation, I could be wrong.

And being potentially relegated to "enemy of my enemy is my friend" status is also a negative. Really diminishes the threat of the character, much like what happened with the Destroyer in Thor.

The impression I get from the trailers is that Lex is manipulating/encouraging the situation. He certainly seem's to be gloating when he gives his "Greatest Gladiator match" comment to Lois...

...which, actually, makes me wonder how much of a chessmaster this Lex might be. If he -is- encouraging the brawl as I suspect, maybe his line in the previous trailer about bringing Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent together has deeper significance...

Granted, Lex knowing Batman and Supes' identities would be a big change, but...

There have been a lot of hints in interviews that this is indeed the case and Lex is quite the mastermind.

All that said, The first part of the trailer with Batman taking out the thugs I think really nails Batman more than any live action take yet. Now THAT'S a Batman.

I'm not sure whether the movie will turn out good seeing as there are alot of things going on.

Lexie knows Supes and Bats' identities

Supes and Bats fight..alot

Doomsday comes

And outta knowhere comes Wonder Woman

Heck, unless the movie goes for longer than 3 hours I'm not sure how they will make it look good

Well...there is a UK release tomorrow, so I'm going to it. Reviews don't leave me optimistic, though.

Anyone interested in snarky rage response afterwards?

Sure, the trailers spoiled most of the movie anyway.

Oh, but not one thing! Something Snyder let slip in an interview that makes me seriously apprehensive about this films characterisation.

He talked about a panel in TDKR where Batman, apparently, uses a machine gun to put a bullet in a guy's head.

I have always defended Man of Steel's ending. To me, it looked like a perfect counterpoint to current morality and superhero films where villains die in the 3rd act. It was a moment where a good man has no choice but to do something monstrous, something that goes against his fundamental morality.

And he does it. And he hates himself for it.

I honestly believed that was a genuine, complex and Powerful moment of meta-narrative.

If Snyder is serious about fans just being mad at him for "making Superman grow up" (another interview quote apparently), and the spoiler above is true?

Then oh boy. Guys. Guys.

I will have opinions.

Just got back from an early showing. And honestly, the negative reviews I have seen are completely unjustifiable. I LOVED this movie. I went in with low expectations, and I was blown away. Maybe I'm just a superhero nerd, but this movie in my opinion was very good. I don't want to spoil to much, so I'll wait to discuss more after more have seen it. I will offer two things of advice:

1. Go in with an open mind. Ignore any negative reviews you have seen, make your own opinion of the movie. This is what I did, and I had a great time.

2. I'll save you guys ten minutes of your life. There is no post-credit scene. You're welcome :)

I'm curious to see if you guys enjoyed it as much as I did. I'll give it an 8/10

See.. I'm hoping that's not a gun, but an "EMP Blaster" or something. Batman doesn't use guns in much the same way that the Doctor doesn't kill; it's cornerstone of their philosophies and the fans will (rightly!) riot if the tenent is broken... but the specifics are a bit murkier.

Basically, I'm hoping it's just gun shaped, the way the explosive gel firing thing from The Dark Knight was. And thus is not, technically, a gun.

Unless the reviews are brilliant, if I watch this film it will be for Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman is the reason I wanna see this movie.

(Fine, slight lie. I rather liked the most recent trailer, with Batfleck.)

But yeah, Wonder Woman looks awesome, and I am kinda hoping for her to carry the film. The fact that I'm going into this knowing nothing about her role in the film only has me more excited and interested.

Well, one quote I did get out of one review.

"Be warned, he kills people."

Makes you wonder how the people for the Suicide Squad are still around.

Posted (edited)

So upfront I did not see the movie. I had no intention of seeing the movie except to rent it at some point, so I did not care about spoilers in the review I watched. Then curious about what the reviewers stated, I wikied the plot. So take what I say as biased that I came into it not interested, and I am basing my opinion on the summary. Having warned of that, I will put all my comments in a spoilers tag as they spoil the entire movie. This is more to go back and forth with those who have seen the movie and get their thoughts on my issues, as they have seen it, while I have only read it.

So first issue. Batman has been around for 20 years by this point while Superman's devastation of Metropolis happened a little more than a year ago. So Batman is so upset at Superman about the destruction, but where was he during it all? The whole world was in danger, including Gotham, so why didn't he show up then and put his two cents in?

Second, from what the review said, we never actually learn why Lex Luther hates Superman so much. He calls him a monster or a demon, but never learn the motivation behind wanting to destroy him so badly.

Third, and this is a big one for me, throwing in/name dropping wonder woman, cyborg, the flash, and aquaman. I sympathize with the writers and directors of these superhero movies. They have to find a way to make these characters plausible in today's world on the big screen. Captain America? Easy, super syrum, giving him above human strength, agility, and endurance but far from invulnerable. Iron Man? Again easy, genius builds his own suit, that can be damaged/destroyed. Thor? Norse God.......ummmm....so you see......ummmm....... But they accomplished that awesomely. They introduced him in his own film so the audience could get to know him individually, and still grounded it in the world by the simple statement of "I come from a world where science and magic for you is indistinguishable". So you could look at it as plausible. They are just far further down the line in technology and genetics than we are. So I could buy that when you then have him meet the other avengers. Then by the time quicksilver and scarlet witch show up, more of the out there abilities don't seem as far fetched. But now lets look at DC. We go from a Batman series that are completely grounded in reality. Ras al Gul doesn't have his lazarus pit. Bane does not have his venom. Everyone is fundamentally human and "natural". Then we jump to superman and suddenly its "aliens". Ok, well I as an audience member could buy that. The figurative camera is "zooming" out persay from just cities or just earth, and realizing there is more out there. But now we jump to "oh by the way, there is a 5,000 year old amazonian daughter of Zeus, a guy that got struck by lightning and run faster than light, a dude with cybernetic implants, and a sponge er um guy that lives under the sea....." We went from completely grounded in reality, to science fiction, to mythology, more science fiction and fantasy. I am not saying it couldn't work. Just it could have been done/explained so much better as evidenced with Marvel. They gradually and organically let us learn the galaxy is not that much of a lonely place as we thought. And also, although I was iffy about Iron Man 3, I loved that they included Tony Stark getting anxiety after the Battle of Manhattan. I mean storms, even if I had abilities, if I suddenly found out an alien army existed and wanted to wipe us out and we just barely beat them, I would freak out too. But the movie just takes for granted the audience will go "oh, ok."

Fourth, Batman and Superman suddenly become besties because their mom's name are the same? Really?

Fifth, this is more from the review I watched by I agree, they killed off Superman way too early. It is like when Kirk dies in the latest Star Trek and Spock yells Khan. In the original movie, they had been friends for years, and built a brotherhood like bond. So when Spock died, Kirk getting all upset about it makes sense. When Kirk dies in the new movie, they still couldn't stand each other. So why is Spock all broken up by Kirk's sacrifice? It wasn't earned. Same here with Superman's death. He didn't build a bond with any of the other characters. He didn't show that he is the type of person that would do the right thing, no matter how hard it is, or easy it would be to just kill or crush with his powers, because it is the right thing to do. They never show why he is a symbol of hope to the world, and why his death would be so devastating. They just kill him and then two seconds later "bring him back". It cheapens it. Now any future Superman movie you know he will survive, because why kill him again?

So in summation, I didn't even see this movie, and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Can anyone who has seen it redeem it for me enough to want to see it? And I realize I already know the whole plot, what would be the point? But I never care about spoilers. Even when I know the end of something, I still enjoy experiencing it. But I don't see much reason to in this case.

I...huh. I...kinda liked it?

...I feel dirty.

But yeah, I found it fun enough. Primarilly as an action vehicle, granted, but still. Not as bad as the reviews and interviews were preparing me for.

...granted, this is a movie featuring BATMAN, SUPERMAN and WONDER WOMAN. Coming out of it shrugging my shoulders and being "That was okay" is still kind of a massive failure on some level.

I'll get full thoughts up after I've had time to "digest" the film some -and who knows, maybe my opinion will change- but there are two things I want to comment on.

Firstly, this film illustrates the fact that Batman cheats at life. For him to even stand a chance of fighting Supes, the filmmakers had to invent a McGuffin to depower him*, had to upgrade Batman's suit to being able to withstand direct gunfire and explosions without a scratch, and Superman had to be trying not to fight back.

Second, Wonder Woman is so awesome. I love that theme of hers that started everytime she showed up. So out of place, and so cool.

*Kryptonite wasn't so much as hinted at in Man of Steel so yes, it counts as being invented for this movie.
