I was actually kind of confused why they each thought they were fighting at that point.

So if superman is so fast and awesome, can't he hear his mothers voice e and find her? Can't he dash around the world at the speed of light and constantly be stopping bad guys, without his whole Clark Kent life/ordinariness?

Plus if he's not actually dead, I'm annoyed at all the sad emotional scenes. I was expecting him to revive pretty quickly, thought huh guess they actually killed him that's cool, and then nooo he's still alive.

Quiver

I see what you're saying but I would hardly say motherhood was a theme. She gets like no screen time or significance except as bait.

And why would Lois even think the spear was safe there? The only weapon that can kill her boyfriend and meh lets just chuck it aside? Id want to hold onto it and lock it away somewhere so I know no one can get at it. Plus then the others are like yeah there's the weapon in the city and I'm like YOU LEFT IT ON THE FLOOR OF AN ABANDONED BUIKDING YOU IDIOTS.

This movie left me rather frustrated. :P

Oh and I guess disclaimer, this is my first superman film since I was like three so I'm not exactly caught up on canon, back stories etc. this still could have been such a good movie....:if it was all the quality of the better parts. Such a shame.

See... it depends on how much you consider it a fight. It really, really wasn't. Sure, Superman said that he had to "Convince him to help [him]... or I have to kill him," with a haunted look that suggests he's considering it...

...But the fight chereography suggests differently. He's pretty defensive at the start of it, trying to talk to Bruce while Batman unloads toys at him. He only starts "fighting" when Bruce gases him with Kryptonite... which, remember, is basically poison to a Kryptonian.

That whole "fight" is Superman trying to get Bruce to start hitting him for five minutes so he can explain the situation, and only fighting back when it's clear Batman is so far off the deadend that he has no other option... and even then, Superman doesn't go for a kill shot, like heat visioning him.

That's why I say Superman won that battle. Bruce was fighting a man who, when faced with every reason to cut loose, instead tied both his arms behind his back, And it's why Supes winning through words -even if that word is just "Martha"- is more satisfying that Batman stepping on Clark's neck.

That will always be a fair criticism, and both Marvel and DC suffer from it, though DC more than Marvel due to more of their heroes being ridiculously strong. There's two ways to look at it, if you ask me. 1) Suspend the disbelief HARDER. Yes, you've suspended to the point that you're willing to engage in the superhero genre. Now suspend further so you don't notice holes like that. 2) Science, logic, and empathize the crap out of it. Why doesn't Supes just listen for his mother to save her? Well, if he showed up on scene the first thing I would do, as the captor, is shoot the mother. Why doesn't Supes use his super hearing and speed to constantly fight all crime to bring peace to the world? Well, he's not immune to stress, and he also avoids making himself seem like a God figure in all of the media variants. Plus I can sympathize that Clark might want some normalcy in his life. It's not like he isn't dedicated to his superhero life, considering he'll drop everything to be a hero for any length of time.

So it's just how you look at it. I assume different readers/viewers handle the issue differently, so it really comes down to whatever best keeps it out of your mind.

Erm, suspend your disbelief harder sounds like an out for sloppy writing. not a criticising you.

And surely superman can pull off a hostage rescue without getting the people he loves hurt. He did it fine in the opening.

(I also don't get why that was such a huge deal in world. He saved his girlfriend. Why does that change everything? They mentioned him hurting people in a village but that was never onscreen. Did he lose his temper or something?

But then why didn't supes yell that ealier? Why wait so long?

(I literally just wrote soups and had to correct myself. :D)

Because... he did? For the entire fight.

This is basically how their conversation went down, or at least how I interpreted it.

Superman: Batman! I need you to listen to me, Lex Luthor-

Batman: Machine guns!

Superman:...Yeah okay, now, about Lex Luthor-

Batman: Sonic disruptors!

Superman: For the love of Rao, will you listen to me for five seconds-

Batman: Smoke bomb!

Superman: Oh for... yeah yeah, real cute, now can we please talk like mature adults-

Batman: Poison gas!

Batman: Yeah, not so chatty now, are ya?

Granted, after the cloud, he could have started talking again... but Bruce kept on going. At some point, Clark was going to have to knock him out, as the minimum action required to resolve things.

I agree, but then again you sort of signed on for sloppy writing when you stepped into the superhero comic realm. Sure, some of them are fantastic, but mostly they're all subpar in terms of actual writing quality.

that's like saying "fantasy is a cheat because anything can happen".

Or are you just saying in reality they happen to not be very good?

Quiver I intepteted it more like

S; hey we need to talk

B: ATTACK!

S: dude give up im better than you

B: ATTACK

S: ATTACK

S: WAIT! Before you kill me here's something important you need to do if I'm dead and therefore can't accomplish it.

B: mothers! Mothers are sacred! I'll save your mother!

S: yay now let's abandon this very powerful and rare weapon here.

B: YEAH! Hero time!

*flies off leaving Lois rolling her eyes. Or is that me? Might be me rolling my eyes.*
