Idea for where epics get their powers

So I'm getting excited for Calamity, and thought I'd share my thoughts about a theory I have.  I think that Calamity was an employee of NASA, and they were doing some reality warping experiments.  (We know that there are alternate universes because a certain epic has powers related to this fact.)  The reason the epic powers break the laws of physics is because the physics come from alternate dimensions.

The astronaut involved in these initial experiments became Calamity.  It might be the person who beat Prof in the contest...

Thoughts?

I had the idea of deriving powers from alternate dimensions with different laws of physics a couple of years ago. It is now incorporated in my magic system, which can be found here. Could I sue Sanderson for tons of money for stealing my idea? XD

Good theory, but if this one's not right, then I have trouble coming up with an explanation that doesn't sound too mystic. Don't know howBrandon wrote this one out, but it's sure to be a doozy.

Not sure that that really works, there's not really a possibility for the laws of physics to mean that someone can control the ocean with their mind. Plus it would make Megan particularly difficult to explain.

Voidus, it appears you may have misunderstand my theory.  My theory is that NASA performed experiments which allowed access to other "dimensions" where the physics are different.  It is quite conceivable that in another dimension minds do control matter (or at least certain types).  It is also possible that in one of the dimensions it is quite easy to access other dimensions (which would explain Megan's power).

No I get that, it's just not really conceivable since to start with it'd need to fundamentally alter the entire universe every time someone uses their abilities and also while I generally don't like to state absolutes like this there's really no conceivable change to physics that would allow someone to alter reality with their mind, a 'mind' isn't a fundamental particle that has it's own laws of physics, it's a collection of very specific matter arranged in a particular way, you can't specifically make that able to alter other matter (Particularly one specific type of matter like water) through physics.

I just think that's a far too complicated answer with consequences so vast I can't even begin to list them. Altering physics itself is something that would mess with the universe so drastically that it would:

a) Kill every single Epic the first time they tried to use their powers

B) Probably kill everyone else and destroy the entire planet too, if not the universe itself.

Yeah, there is an absolutely phenomenal web serial about people with superpowers and it follows that basic concept. It's called Worm and it is absolutely crazy once it gets into it. All the powers come from one Calamity-esque hyper being that exists in hundreds of millions of different realities, and uses energy from those realities for everyone's powers.

I really can't recommend the series enough. It's long, cumbersome, and not edited very well. But the sheer awesomeness which is the final story arc still has my entire existence rocked.

I like it. it definitely sounds Sanderson-y.

Rogue Saint,

I read about the first 7 chapters of the Worm web serial.  I couldn't take it any more after that.  Perhaps you can convince me to continue.  My reasons for stopping are in the spoiler below.

I liked the struggle this girl went through, and how she was trying to do good.  But when her father finally confronted her and her bad behavior, and she basically blamed it all on her bullying, and wanted to spend more time with criminals so she could "be herself" with them, I was just done.

She just makes more and more bad choices, justifying those bad choices with bad rationale.  I don't think I could take a further downward spiral.

I have had the barest bones of an idea for a Book for several years now. Its called "Kings Necromancer."

Guess what I found on "The State of Sanderson"?

My Brother also had an idea for a Book, around the same time, involving Magical Diseases, that grant people powers.

Guess what *He* found on "The State of Sanderson"?
