I was pouring over the Sanderson Q&A's and noticed that someone had asked if Sazed had done anything with the bodies of Ati and Leras after he ascended. Sanderson said "No, I'm afraid not. Those might have been useful to have around, though." Does anyone have any further insight or WoB into this? What "use" would their bodies have been?

I mean presumably the bodies are still slivers, so probably worth something in a world where resurrection is possible.

Interesting quote though. What could you do with them . . .

I seem to remember a WOB that said that he might still use Vin and Elend again someday.  Maybe if you have the bodies, you can bring the spirit back to it and bring them back to life?  The understanding those two had WOULD be useful...

I remember that the final destination (not the movie) of souls is beyond the reach of a Shard (Sazed says something like that).

Therefore something like Vin or Elend resurrection is quite impossible, I may believe in a Kelsier return to the living. But just because he is avaliable.

Aren't the physical bodies of Leras and Ati not just Lerasium and Atium? And after SoS we know

that the Pits of Hathsin were not completely removed from Scadrial.

No no, that's the physical manifestation of the Shard's power (the pits don't really have to do anything with Atium either if all the Investiture has been siphioned from them) named after the Shards' holders. the conversation is about the corpses left behind by the actual people that have held the Shards.

WOB on the subject:

The door is open for a return of Elend and Vin. Will I write it? It isn't likely to be soon, if I ever even do. Does that mean it won't happen? No. Not at all. If I write more Mistborn books, they will be hundreds of years in the future. During that time, Sazed could have learned to get souls into bodies, given Vin and Elend a life together somewhere away from the others, where they wouldn't have to struggle quite so much like they did through their lives, then ushered their souls on to the beyond. Or they could hang around with him, working with him as he takes his next steps to shepherd humankind on Scadrial. Or neither of the above. Imagine it how you wish, for I'm not going to set this one in stone for quite some time, if ever.

This still doesn't tell me what the corpses themselves would be good for...I realize that anyone who hasn't moved on when dead and hovers around the cognate realm still has potential, but other than using a Kanda to impersonate them I have no clue what the corpses of those 2 splinters would be good for. (And I don't think a Kanda impersonation is what Brandon had in mind for Sazed to use them for.)

Some ideas:

  • The corpses had some Spiritual residue left, meaning any special magic systems from Yolen might be copyable by Sazed if he had the bodies and could study their sDNA.
  • The corpses might allow Sazed to view the past and see everything that happened to the people, leading him to understand Adonalsium.
  • Slivers apparently get some kind of Spiritual residue from the Shards they once had, so maybe the bodies could act as a source of power for something when Harmony is unable to do anything with Intent.

I thought at the end of Hero of Ages, Sazed says he could have brought them back but they were happy wherever they were.

You see, the cosmere has an afterlife somewhere in the Spiritual and/or Cognitive Realm and a true afterlife beyond the Realms. While some, like Kelsier, refuse to pass on, others reach their final destination.

Shards find that mysterious place/state/something very hard, if not impossible to affect, although Brandon does say that if we wish we can think Sazed is working on a way to reach there to talk with Tindwyl(sp?).
