I think the part of the December that gets on my nerves is the prevalent feeling of an OCD perfectionism. I notice it in the songs, in the commercialism, in the stereotyped perfect Christmas family gathering and dinner, and I really don't like it. My family's pretty decent about keeping it simple, I've mentioned that, but still....it gets to me.

Delightful, if you're still reading this thread, do you get tired of Christmas stuff? Or are you separated, or separate yourself from it enough that you don't think about it very much? Do you like Hanukkah? Sorry if that's a lot of questions, I'm not familiar with anyone Jewish but I'm curious about this kind of thing.

Speaking from a pagan point of view....I mostly don't mind Christmas.  Of course, most of the holiday traditions are taken from pagan religions, so I have a pretty good gigglefit when people start crying out that not putting a tree or a reindeer on a cup is part of the "War on Christmas".

No, there's no War on Christmas. I just happen to consider Yule to be a more religious holiday for me.

(On the other hand, all this cold weather can just go die in a fire.)

I think it's more that people are convinced there's a "War on Christmas" and well point out any "example", however tenuous, to prove that such a conflict exists.

Much like football fans, Christmas fans don't seem to understand that not everyone wants Christmasy stuff jammed down their throat 24/7. It's almost like they lack the cognitive ability to understand that there just might exist someone that does not want to hear "Santa Baby" 50 times a day throughout the month of December.

Seriously, I would be a lot less Grinchy if they banned that song from being played on the air waves. Or pretty much any and all Christmas music, it's mostly garbage or should be relegated to 50s-60s era musicals.

And don't people understand the concept of "too much of a good thing?" A Christmas Story was a good move. Was. It has since over-saturated everything to the point where if I'm going to enjoy it, I have to avoid it for at least three years.

I prefer my Christmas music served up to me by Mannheim Steamroller.  Yeah, it's cliche, but those arrangements are actually good.

Also, the less-common madrigal-type songs out there are pretty good.  The Boar's Head just doesn't get enough play, I tells ya.

Huh, I guess I just have a different take on Christmas. I understand that for many people the overplayed songs and somewhat repetitive nature of Christmas may turn some people off, but for some reason it never had that effect on me. I love Christmas. The music, the decorations, and just the overall atmosphere. It just makes me so... happy. Sorry if that sounds a bit corny, but it's really the only way I can describe it. As a kid I always was happy when my family drove me around and looked at Christmas lights while listening to Christmas Carols, and when we set up the tree and decorated it together. As someone stated above, I understand that not everybody is as big a fan of Christmas as I am, but somehow I just don't get tired of those overplayed songs and movies, because to me they just coincide with happiness. I try to ignore the ridiculous stories around Holiday season, and I try to focus on the ones where people make a difference by giving. For every dumb story, there are stories of people who change lives through their giving that go completely unnoticed (or ignored) by the media. Heh, I guess this is why some of my friends nicknamed me Buddy the Elf around this time. I feel like this time of the year is the only time I can relax, and just...feel the joy that we should be feeling.

Anyways, sorry if I'm rambling at this point. I was going to quote a Christmas Carol, but I've changed my mind on that for you all :P.

I know how you feel.

Every since I was a kid, I have had poor health. I got sick, and couldn't travel a lot. I had asthma and so couldn't play sports.

But during Christmas....

The music, the laughter, the joy. Hot cookies and cocoa. My relatives supported me during those times and I felt great. It was a time to get together, form bonds. With the overplayed movies and music just echoing in our heads. Even tree decorating was awesome. The holiday season, to me, is a time with family and friends and to celebrate the good things in life.

Did I mention the cookies?

What's madrigal? I know that word as a character name.

A Renaissance-era song for voices with no accompaniment, often with a lot of musical counterpoint in the lines.

Like acapella, or multiple melodies?

Multiple melodies.  The arrangements are usually 4-6 different voice lines.

Huh. I have never liked Christmas, I mean the gifts were nice but free stuff is mostly nice. Even when I was a kid I didn't get excited though I did have to fake the excitement or else they try extra hard to include me in things. Which to me is a punishment far worse than death.

But now that I am an adult I haven't been to a family Christmas get together thing since my nana died, which was 6 years ago I think, and the only reason that could be considered a Christmas get together is because she died on Christmas eve.

So yeah I have never gotten the whole hype behind Christmas. I would rather do what I'm going to do this year, which is stay at home and be by myself.

I don't feel all that holiday cheer this year.

It's probably something to do with the temperature being 75. -_-

This. So much. It's colder than it usually is this time of year, but still no snow. Edited by TwiLyghtSansSparkles

Are y'all grinching on the warm weather?!? I mean...okay it's been really wet and windy too, but those days that's been good? Beautiful!

Well, that's because you're in Tucson, Arizona, silly! :P

Unless you go to Flagstaff.

He sees you when you're sleeping.

He knows when you're awake.

He's stalking you on Facebook,

So be good for goodness sakes!

That reminds me of a couple other songs based on Saint Nicolai himself!
