Now there's a specific thread to air our grievances about the holiday season...Particularly all the noise, noise, noise, NOISE!

This bugs me so much. Starbucks' not specifically Christmas coffee cups made it's way into my school newspaper. Seriously? We're going to argue because the cup is plain red and doesn't have pine trees on it? It's so irritating.

I don't know anyone who's actually upset about those cups, yet the "controversy" still made it onto multiple news networks and was the subject of multiple Internet rants. Did…did a bunch of people just decide to get upset over those cups out of sheer boredom? Are they trolling us?

I feel like people decide to get upset about things for no reason a lot these days. It is like people look for things to get upset about just so they can get attention or because they like being upset or... I dont even know anymore.

I think it's more that people are convinced there's a "War on Christmas" and well point out any "example", however tenuous, to prove that such a conflict exists. 

 

Much like football fans, Christmas fans don't seem to understand that not everyone wants Christmasy stuff jammed down their throat 24/7. It's almost like they lack the cognitive ability to understand that there just might exist someone that does not want to hear "Santa Baby" 50 times a day throughout the month of December. 

 

Seriously, I would be a lot less Grinchy if they banned that song from being played on the air waves. Or pretty much any and all Christmas music, it's mostly garbage or should be relegated to 50s-60s era musicals.

 

And don't people understand the concept of "too much of a good thing?" A Christmas Story was a good move. Was. It has since over-saturated everything to the point where if I'm going to enjoy it, I have to avoid it for at least three years.

I agree, christmas is too much the same over and over, I get traditions and all, but traditions are boring, we should have different holidays every odd and even years, except on leap years that have further different holidays. That way none of them will be boring once they come around again.

The only part of Christmas that I'm really grinchy about is the music. A whole month, year after year after year, if the same overly "perfected" songs makes me die inside a little.

I probably would be a bit more of a grinch if we did extended family for Christmas Day, but thankfully we always do it a week before or after, so Christmas Day is super chill.

The thing about Christmas that really annoys me is that people try to make every little thing about Christmas perfect. The good 'ol days. There is not a day without bad stuff and pain in it. That just makes life interesting.

Stop trying to control things that are not controllable.

Coming from someone who doesn't celebrate Christmas -- maybe if there was less focus on overplayed music and consumerism, and more focus on what the holiday is actually about, (and if you want to be secular focus on the family aspect or something rather than Jesus) - it might be less boring. I'm getting the impression y'all don't like the shallowness to it. So, find some depth.

Huh, I guess I just have a different take on Christmas. I understand that for many people the overplayed songs and somewhat repetitive nature of Christmas may turn some people off, but for some reason it never had that effect on me. I love Christmas. The music, the decorations, and just the overall atmosphere. It just makes me so... happy. Sorry if that sounds a bit corny, but it's really the only way I can describe it. As a kid I always was happy when my family drove me around and looked at Christmas lights while listening to Christmas Carols, and when we set up the tree and decorated it together. As someone stated above, I understand that not everybody is as big a fan of Christmas as I am, but somehow I just don't get tired of those overplayed songs and movies, because to me they just coincide with happiness. I try to ignore the ridiculous stories around Holiday season, and I try to focus on the ones where people make a difference by giving. For every dumb story, there are stories of people who change lives through their giving that go completely unnoticed (or ignored) by the media. Heh, I guess this is why some of my friends nicknamed me Buddy the Elf around this time. I feel like this time of the year is the only time I can relax, and just...feel the joy that we should be feeling. 

 

Anyways, sorry if I'm rambling at this point. I was going to quote a Christmas Carol, but I've changed my mind on that for you all .

My issue is not the shallowness or commercialization... Being a human, I'M well acquainted with those characterizations and can even recognize them myself. My issue is the implicit and explicit pressure to participate, and it's massive! And there is no compromise... You HAVE TO listen to Christmas Carol, you HAVE TO enjoy decorations, you HAVE TO have family get togethers, watch the Christmas canon, listen to Linus' stupid speech, etc. And if you object to any of this? Well, you just want to persecute Christians! :roll:

In less of a ranty form: it's like if someone decides you aren't happy enough and buts into your life and says, "smile! Be happy!" And then gets indignant when you tell them you're fine/leave me alone. It's like that on a much larger scale, lasting 24/7 for a month, if you're lucky.

My issue is the implicit and explicit pressure to participate, and it's massive! And there is no compromise... You HAVE TO listen to Christmas Carol, you HAVE TO enjoy decorations, you HAVE TO have family get togethers, watch the Christmas canon, listen to Linus' stupid speech, celebrate the magical birth of a magical baby, etc. And if you object to any of this? Well, you just want to persecute Christians! :roll:

And I get that, I really do. Sorry if I seemed like I was trying to push Christmas onto you. Nobody should have an obligation to participate in Christmas events, some people just enjoy different things. This "War on Christmas" is complete nonsense. If somebody isn't as excited for Christmas as you are, that's no reason to get upset or feel attacked. We should just let everybody do their own thing.

To me it is just more repetition. I dont mind Santa and free stuff or any of that, it just happens every single year in the exact same way and the decoration is everywhere and the christmas songs are annoying, mostly, there are good parts of being a social recluse. There is not much of the religious part here either, my entire family are atheists, most of sweden is, if they are not they keep it quiet.

 

So thats why I think that different holidays every second year except on leap years is a good idea, less repetition, you wont be as tired of any of them and I have a reason to celebrate halloween during summer.

 

Christmas would of course be on leap years.
