Oudeis he/him Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 There's also a mid-day drunk stumbling out of the inn at the end. I had assumed the guy at the end was her next bounty.
Pechvarry Posted December 11, 2013 Posted December 11, 2013 I had assumed the guy at the end was her next bounty. So in other words... Hoid? 3
Oudeis he/him Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 So in other words... Hoid? Yes. Silence is secretly the current chairman of the 17th Shard. 2
Iredomi Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Yes. Silence is secretly the current chairman of the 17th Shard. And Shai as vice pres. 1
Pechvarry Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 In other stories, Hoid is a catalyst. He gently shoves the story along. In SSFH,I can only think of one action that could fit the bill, and it's decidedly un-Hoidly the crossbow bolt, which is more obviously Theopolis This leads to a pretty basic conclusion: this planet is so unimportant, so forgotten, it provides nothing for Hoid to further his own goals. Or perhaps, with nothing left of deific power, there's simply nothing for him to push on to save them. But who knows? Maybe all the evil in the world is thwarted of screen
Oudeis he/him Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I'd personally love to confirm whether or not Hoid is there, as I wish to know if Shadesmar even connects to "unimportant" shardworlds.
bartbug he/him Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I'd assume Shadesmar connects there. I mean, there is a whole nother continent, and that means a lot of Cognitive Activity.
Kurkistan he/him Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I'd personally love to confirm whether or not Hoid is there, as I wish to know if Shadesmar even connects to "unimportant" shardworlds. Hoid isn't there, according to Brandon, but I'm with bart in saying that I think Shadesmar still connects just about everywhere with enough life to have people.
Oudeis he/him Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I've seen a few things from Mr. Ahlstrom that made it look like Mr. Sanderson may or may not have changed his mind on that. For all we know, without the power of a Shard, the Cognitive Realm isn't safe to travel, or doesn't even extend there. We know "cognition" is one thing it requires; we don't know that this is ALL that it requires. That I know of, we have no textual support for either case. If Hoid did show up, that would be confirmation. Your speculation is valid, but doesn't actually help us.
Pechvarry Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Hoid isn't there, according to Brandon, but I'm with bart in saying that I think Shadesmar still connects just about everywhere with enough life to have people. Lol. I get to do this. I'm so excited. See here for why that may not be true. Alternatively, scroll up (it's even a response to you!)
Kurkistan he/him Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Lol. I get to do this. I'm so excited. See here for why that may not be true. Alternatively, scroll up (it's even a response to you!) Yes, I noticed. Sorry for not responding to you directly, Peter, but I thought that was a rather clear statement that "well, if Brandon doesn't even remember it, it probably isn't him being all ninja-sneaky and sneaking Hoid in under my nose". So Peter's reply is further evidence of Hoid's absence. 1
Pechvarry Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Huh. I took the events as: Brandon: no Hoid Peter: you sure? What about this thing? Brandon: oh. I forgot that thing. Ergo, Hoid probably is there.
Kurkistan he/him Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Huh. Perhaps, though Brandon went to the lengths to be all (to paraphrase) "I don't want there to be Hoid because he's not just a cameo" when he told us that Hoid wouldn't be there to us.
PeterAhlstrom he/him Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Sometimes Brandon does things that he forgot he did. Like Hoid's appearance in Well of Ascension—it took him forever to remember where he put him. 1
cem he/him Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Sometimes Brandon does things that he forgot he did. Like Hoid's appearance in Well of Ascension—it took him forever to remember where he put him. Is that a confirmation Hoid's in there? It sounds like a confirmation.
Pechvarry Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I think Peter intends to beat us around this bush until one of us asks Brandon again.
Oudeis he/him Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 If he exists, my money is on that horse thief from the start of the story.
askthepaperclip he/him Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 (edited) Holy fast response time, Peter! Here is my question: does Peter have some sort of alert (read: bat signal) that informs him when someone mentions him here, or does he spend as much time here as the rest of us? ;-) Edited December 13, 2013 by askthepaperclip 2
Mikanium Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Holy fast response time, Peter! Here is my question: does Peter have some sort of alert (read: bat signal) that informs him when someone mentions him here, or does he spend as much time here as the rest of us? ;-) My theory is that Peter has a implant in his brain that zaps him with electricity anytime someone writes about Hoid.
PeterAhlstrom he/him Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 I just have this page bookmarked: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=new_posts&search_app=forums 3
Peng the Just he/him Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 I believe the Shardic influence is from the shard of Justice. Break the rules, pay the price.
Green Hoodie Mistborn he/him Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 Just finished this story... I liked it, but man was it ever dark! I didn't mind the Shades/ghosts, I love that people have mostly learned to co-exist with them... it is such a spooky and weird thing that people do, adapt as best they can to the environment in which they live. @jasonpenguin ... that would be very harsh Justice indeed. i think it must be a dark Shard if the Shard is still present.
