Ending question (no spoilers)

I guessed sort-of what would happen, but not exactly how it would happen. There were still some big surprises.

edit: Okay you said no spoilers, but that doesn't mean we can't post spoilers for each other. Just don't read it. :D

I guessed that the planet was wrecked and only a god could save it. And that Vin would die; I thought Vin was the Hero and that "unfortunately the Hero of Ages" meant Vin's sadness at having to leave Elend. I noticed that the epigraphs weren't in Vin's voice, but I just thought "sad ghost Vin" had a different voice.

So I was pretty sure that once Elend beat Ruin's armies, Vin would beat Ruin and fix the planet, but die. It kind of happened. I didn't guess Sazed obviously.

Nope, not surprised in the slightest... Of course that might having something to do with reading the wikipedia article about the Trilogy when I found out Brandon was finishing the Wheel of Time.  Basically I knew how the trilogy ended before I even began.

The "I am hope" scene really got me when I reread it though, I saw that it was foreshadowed VERY heavily. For the end of the whole series, I was somewhat surprised. IIRC, I had seen small snippets on here before I had finished so I had a small idea, but most of it surprised me.

Argent, Batman didn't even faze me. What got me was when Iron Man shot down from the sky carrying a missile straight at Kredik Shaw.

Seriously? That's what you pick out? It's like none of you even noticed invisible kid....oh, right...nevermind.

More on topic, I don't really remember how much it surprised me honestly, a friend had talked to me about it a couple of years before but I barely remembered that. I guess I didn't see it coming but wasn't surprised by it if that makes sense.

I was... irritated.

I'd guessed that Sazed was the Hero of Ages back when they started tossing around the vaguely gendered thing that was supposed to support it being Vin. I was disappointed at the end of WoA when Vin took the power. Then to have HoA pull Sazed out as the Hero at the last minute after WoA felt like a major cheat, rather than the epic twist I imagined it was meant to be. Honestly, it soured Brandon for me for a little while... To put it in perspective, it kind of felt like this (obviously I'm not suggesting Brandon is actually like this, from what I understand he's awesome and down to Earth. I'm just trying to illustrate why the ending of the trilogy missed big time for me):

BS: Vin is totally the Hero of Ages. The word that everyone has translated as "he" is actually gender neutral.

LK: The gender neutral thing sounds more to me like you're going to pull out Sazed as the Hero at the end as some kind of twist.

BS: Nope. See, Vin just took the power, she's totally the Hero of Ages.

LK: Okay, I concede. I guess I'm just being...

BS: HA! Fooled you! It really is Sazed! Bet you didn't see that coming.

LK: *heavy sigh*

I'm glad I came back to Brandon though (the Mistborn adventure game was a major influence in this) because his other works are amazing, and I'm enjoying my reread of Mistborn.

About the ending to the Mistborn series, were YOU surprised at what happens? No spoilers please.

I was very surprised and excited at the end of each part of the trilogy.

AoL not so much. But then, it's just an interlude.

Dah, I knew about the two gods tricking each other and about the additional metals and various other stuff, but it didn't prevent me from any fun while reading the books.

I'd guessed that Sazed was the Hero of Ages back when they started tossing around the vaguely gendered thing that was supposed to support it being Vin.

What irritated me was not that gender-neutral pronoun at all. I was that they did it on purpose. For many languages it would work just because they do not mark gender at all. And here it seemed like Old Terrisan had a cheap calque of English "he" vs "she" vs "it".

And the author of the prophecy considered Sazed a man no more — only because he was missing an organ?

  • 1 month later...
  • 2 weeks later...

My cousin Saskia was staying over when she finished HoA. It was around 2 in the morning when she let out a "You B**st**d!" at me. She was apparently a bit annoyed that I hadn't told her about the two characters found in the field of flowers. To be honest I can't remember hearing it myself, she may have inadvertently yelled it at someone else who got up to use the bathroom.' but who is thinking clearly that time in the morning?

Well I guess the ending definitely surprised her.
