Mistrunner Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 My mom is getting mad at me for alphabetizing my Legos by which series there are from. Packing sucks. When I was packing, I spent a ton of time organizing my papers. And anything else that would sit still.Have fun packing. Don't kill yourself, don't die, and don't kill anyone. 1
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Good gravy, is there a single nobleman in the Final Empire, besides Elend and Penrod, who DOESN'T suck?
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Lord Ruler, why did you surround yourself with cow turds? My brother told me that there's one character so foul that a kandra refuses to eat him. I'm having a hard time determining who it is. 1
Mailliw73 he/him Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 I'm rereading TFE, and I just finished Kelsier's fight scenes and oh, storms, I forgot how much I loved them. That scene definitely ranks as one of Brandon's best, in my opinion. It never ceases to give me the chills when I read it. Along with the HoA battle and some of the final battle scenes in SA, this is definitely one of my favorites. Spoilers below. I mean, Kell going head to head with an Inquisitor? And winning? Hammering him into a cart and decapitating him, after proving his worth with iron and steel, blocking archers, swinging soldiers as weapons, distracting, and eventually, hitting the Inquisitor? Lord Ruler, but that man was an amazing fighter. I would've liked to see Dalinar, Kaladin, and Kell team up in a battle. 3

Having tried an failed at writing action scenes in the past, I would like to pose a thoughtful query:HOW ON Scadrial CAN HE DO THAT? 1
Zathoth Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Writing fight scenes seems perfectly impossible when you think about it, yet Brandon does it all the time, and does it amazing. Vin Tearing apart Kredik Shaw to kill the Inquisitors controlled by Ruin is almost even cooler.
Mailliw73 he/him Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Storms yes. I love that scene. Having tried an failed at writing action scenes in the past, I would like to pose a thoughtful query: HOW ON Scadrial CAN HE DO THAT? Brandon? I wonder the same thing every time I read it. It's one of the best action scenes in fantasy, in books in general, I've ever read. Another thing I just thought of: Everyone always makes fun of how TLR probably laughed when Vin attacked to the side of him when burning malatium, but nobody mentions Kelsier. I wondered why he never even attempted fighting the Lord Ruler, but just realized, maybe he was. I think he was burning malatium while he stood there, unmoving, as he gave his final "Hope" speech. He probably began burning it, assuming it would be the final clue to defeating the Lord Ruler, when suddenly, a packman appears and TLR slaps him and stabs him with a spear. 1
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 (edited) I try to avoid writing fight scenes, if I can get away with it. I feel like they always come across as dry and mechanical when I attempt them--"Bob spun his quarterstaff. His quarterstaff hit Phil in the legs. Phil fell. Phil tried to stand, but Bob had a knife. Sadly for both of them, George had dynamite. They died." Edited October 28, 2015 by TwiLyghtSansSparkles 3
Zathoth Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I think one way to get around that is to make the fights more intellectual than physical. You need to outsmart the others, not beat them up. Or you figure out how in the everstorming damnation Brandon does it. 3

Pretty sure he made a deal with some deity or another, so I doubt I'd be able to use his method. 3
Zathoth Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Pretty sure he made a deal with some deity or another, so I doubt I'd be able to use his method. Brandon took his writing utensils to the crossroads by midnight, there he met Satan (Because who else is going to help you get rich and famous?) who gave him the ability to be an amazing writer. I dont have a crossroads, but Ive been thinking about bringing my guitar to the roundabout by midnight, maybe Satan is there to help. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Johnson#Devil_legend In case anyone didnt get the joke... 1
Orlion Blight he/him Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I think the key to writing food fight scenes is to have a good focus on what the characters are feeling, for example: Bob stood over Phil, knife held in front...hesitating? Or perhaps savoring Phil's helplessness. Is this how it is to end? Phil laughed nervously, how depressing that his life could be excised from the world with a mere Sharp, metal edge. But Bob wasn't hesitating or savoring his victory. He was gazing at George, confused. "You think that because Phil lost, you have won," George lit the fuse on a stick of dynamite, "trouble is, sometimes it's what you ignore that end up blowing up in your face." "Wait, what-?" Bob could not get another word out after George threw the dynamite at him, and Phil died just as confused as Bob. 2
